Cameron Mitchell Movies

Want to know the best Cameron Mitchell movies?  How about the worst Cameron Mitchell movies?  Curious about Cameron Mitchell box office grosses or which Cameron Mitchell movie picked up the most Oscar® nominations? Need to know which Cameron Mitchell movie got the best reviews from critics and audiences and which got the worst reviews? Well, you have come to the right place…. because we have all of that information and much more.

Cameron Mitchell (1918-1994) was an American actor.  After gaining notoriety on Broadway, Mitchell began appearing in movies in the 1940s. His acting career spanned 6 decades.  His IMDb page shows 244 acting credits from 1944 to 2018. This page will rank Cameron Mitchell movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information. To do well in the rankings, a movie needed to do well at the box office, be liked by both critics and audiences and earn some award recognition.  FYI – Sadly we were not able to find any box office information on many of his movies.  So we decided to release the information we did have on his movies.  Must admit, our confidence level is pretty low in actually finding any more information on his very low budgeted movies that barely saw time in theaters.

  1. DAN CORNER

Marvin’s opening comment to Burton [as recorded in my 3rd paragraph in Part One] does suggest to me that if he had ever made a string of films with The Thin Woman he would have had a field day!

Myrna would have been used to Lee’s excessive drinking though because if I recall correctly Nick and Nora Charles were always knocking the booze back as they solved their crimes!

Dashiell Hammett wrote The Thin Woman Series and apparently he based Nora on his own long-time romantic partner playwright Lillian Hellman; and the boozy banter that Nick and Nora engaged in was based on similar intoxicated banter between the real-life Dashiell and Lillian.

Companion “Do you drink at all?”
    Dashiell Hammett: “All the time!”

Hammett [1982] from American Zoetrope studios founded by George Lucas and Francis Ford Coppola

    1. Hey Bob…. I think the drinking in the Thin Man movies was like the drinking Dean Martin pretended to do….part of the act. While Lee and Richard were hardcore drinkers. Hammett is a pretty good movie. I just rewatched that one pretty recently. Good stuff.

  2. I have seen 42 of Cameron’s movies listed above; the highest ranked I have not seen is The Silent Scream.

Cameron Mitchell is # 933 on the 2021 Oracle of Bacon list. Cameron is the # 286 most connected actor of the 1970s and the # 457 most connected of the 1980’s. These are the actors on the 2021 list he has appeared with.

    1. Hey Dan,
      1. Thanks as always for putting these lists together.
      2. Tally count….Dan with an easy win….42 movies to Flora’s 22. Bob gets the bronze with 21 and Cogerson gets to watch the ceremony with 17.
      3. Not surprised Cam Mitch is so highly rated…he had a very busy and long career.
      4. Most frequent Oracle co-star is John Dehner with 4 movies. I must admit, I am not aware of who Mr. Dehner…I will have to do an internet search on him.
      5. 44 Oscar winning co-stars is impressive, especially when you look at his type of movies….granted The Swarm helped him pick up 7 in one movie.
      Good stuff as always.

    Les Miserables
    Power River

    The Sellout
    Man on a Tightrope
    Monkey on My Back

Pony Soldier [aka over here MacDonald of the Canadian Mounties] – Ty Power an American of long-line Irish descent playing a Canuck – what a comedown!

    1. Hey Bob….thanks for sharing your 21 seen. Tally count: Dan 42, Flora 22, you 21 and me at 17….which has increased since writing this page because I watched Cam in The Klansman. I have seen 7 of the ones you have. I will have to check out Pony Soldier.

      1. HI BRUCE: Thanks for the feedback. The Klansman although ultimately a flop as your tables faithfully illustrate got a lot of publicity back in its day because of the teaming of “hellraisers” Burton/Marvin.

They had never met before but because each had a reputation for being difficult they were both determined not to be intimidated by the other and were ready for a possible confrontation on 1st day’s shooting.

When Burton arrived on set Marvin was already seated and he glared at Richard and provocatively raising his voice said “I suppose you know I get first billing!”

Richard in that Churchillian tone of his quickly snapped back “I supposed you know I get more money!”

They were wary of each other during that 1st day’s shooting but at its close immediately headed for the same spot: the studio’s bar! and for the rest of the movie actually became huge drinking buddies being normally either a bit intoxicated or else hung-over throughout the entire period of subsequent filming.

According to Marvin’s biographer years later Richard and Lee each claimed he couldn’t remember ever having met the other !!! See also Dan’s Corner in Part 2

        1. Hey Bob….I have read that both Marvin and Burton were drinking 2 to 3 bottles a day of alcohol while filming…..that might explain why they do not remember seeing each other. They do have numerous scenes together. Funny about them fighting about top billing. Good feedback.

  4. I thought I would get in before Flora with this one but she has beaten me to the punch again AND pipped my “have seen” total just to rub it in. There’s no doubt that as long as SHE contributes to this site I am what lead racketeer Lee J Cobb complained about potentially being in On the Waterfront “just another guy around here!”

Cameron was a big part of my growing up with movies. I have seen him in 21 of the films mentioned above. I have listed them in Part 2 ; but the ones that I most recall are:

Monkey on My Back – story of real-life boxer Barney Ross and his drug addiction. One of Cameron’s few significant lead roles and I see that The Work Horse awards it a fine 73% rating.

Tension at Table Rock-in which Cam plays a cowardly town sheriff who gains redemption by coming to realize that as The Duke used to express it “A man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do!”

And 4 movies with some of my greatest idols of the 1950s and beyond: Desiree [Brando] Love Me or Leave Me [Doris Day] Garden of Evil and Hell and High Water [both starring Widmark] and the B western Powder River starring my fave B movie actor of the 1950s Rory Calhoun followed by Audie Murphy in my esteem.

My most continual experience with Cameron’s work was though provided by the TV western series High Chaparral in which Cameron played Buck Cannon who was one of the Cannon brothers who owned the High Chaparral ranch. There were 98 episodes over 4 series aired from Sep 1967- Mar 71. Those American TV westerns series were viewing for whole families back in those days.

Buck Cannon : [Explaining to a cowboy why he pulled a hidden gun] I whole lot rather be watching them put you in the ground and have folks saying ‘That Buck Cannon, he don’t fight fair’ than to have ‘Here lies Buck Cannon, he fought fair’ on my tombstone. Cameron Mitchell as Buck – a wonderfully skilled and entertaining actor – so “Voted Up!”

    1. Hey Dan. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the Cameron Mitchell movies you have connected with the most. Of those listed, I think Monkey on My Back is the one I want to see the most of the ones I have not seen. I remember him being in Desiree but I do not really remember his character doing anything other than standing beside Brando in many scenes. Good information on High Chaparral…a series that did not get much of a syndication run in my area. Good quote about the fairness of gun play…lol.

  5. I cannot find Ride in the Whirlwind which Cameron Mitchell made with Jack Nicholson. I am including the film in my Mitchell total movies seen.

I have seen 22 Cameron Mitchell movies.

The HIGHEST rated movie I have seen is How to Marry a Millionaire.

The highest movie I have NOT seen is The Robe.

The LOWEST rated movie I have seen is The Swarm.

    Favourite Cameron Mitchell Movies:

    How to Marry a Millionaire
    They Were Expendable
    Love Me or Leave Me
    The Tall Man
    Carousel
    Garden of Evil
    Hombre
    My Favorite Year
    House of Bamboo
    Hell and High Water
    No Down Payment
    Man in the Saddle
    Strange Lady in Town
    Buck and the Preacher

Other Cameron Mitchell Movies I Have Seen:

    Ride in the Whirlwind
    Command Decision
    Homecoming
    Cass Timberlane
    High Barbaree
    Man on a Tightrope
    Tension at Table Rock
    The Swarm

    1. Hey Flora….thanks for checking out our Cameron Mitchell page. I did not include Ride in the Whirlwind since it did not get an official North American release…..since researching Jack movies about 11 years ago, but with streaming growing so fast…we have had to ease the rules so we could include more movies…so maybe it is time put Ride in the Whirlwind….a movie that was a success in France at the box office.

Tally count: 22 for you and 16 for me. I have seen 8 of your favorites…with My Favorite Year being the most recent one, as I just watched that a couple of days ago…and probably the spark that got me motivated to do this page. I have seen 2 of your others…..The Swarm is a cult classic for sure.. Good stuff as always.

      1. Hey Flora… I saw The Klansman last night…a horrible movie, but it does feature Cameron Mitchell in a supporting role…so my tally is now 17.
