Catherine Deneuve (1943-) is an Oscar® nominated French actress.   Deneuve gained recognition for her portrayal of icy, aloof and mysterious beauties for various directors, including Luis Buñuel, François Truffaut and Roman Polanski. Her IMDb page shows over 135 acting credits since 1957.  This page will rank Catherine Deneuve movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information.  To do well in our overall rankings a movie has to do well at the box office, get good reviews by critics, be liked by audiences, and get some award recognition.  Sadly many of her movies did not play in North American theaters.  Even sadder, many of her French films were not included in the rankings.  This was due to a lack of box office information.

  1. Catherine has in the bag 39 acting awards and 26 nominations; and she has a reported current net worth of $75 million which is an enormous amount for a “continental” actress to accumulate.

Catherine is currently filming a French movie De Son Vivant and Catherine is the top-billed star.

Her most recent film is Terrible Jungle a French “adventure comedy” in which she is the top billed star and which was released in France this year. Its cumulative actual worldwide gross to date is $1.6 million.

  2. “Catherine Deneuve is the 402nd Joel subject to get a page.”

Thus doeth Mr Cogerson open this new page with another of his signature serial references to Mr Hirschhorn. I couldn’t help smiling at the irony of the fact that the only Catherine Denevue movie that I have ever seen is The April Fools!

Though I suppose that within the context of a All Fools Day it might be more appropriate in Mr Hirschhorn’s case to refer to A Man for All Seasons!

Mr Cogerson goes on to say “That only leaves 8 [Joel pages] to go!” Goodness -that many!

Lake Leman lies by Chillon’s walls:
A thousand feet in depth below
Its massy waters meet and flow.

Below the surface of the lake
The dark vault lies wherein we lay:
We heard it ripple night and day.

    Sounding o’er our heads it knocked;
And I have felt the winter’s spray
Wash through the bars when winds were high
    And wanton in the happy sky;

And then the very rocks have rocked
And I have felt them shake unshocked,
Because I would have smiled to see
The death that would have set me free!”

    1. Hey Anon….and just like that….the Joel project is complete….all 410 subjects have been written about….one more update to the Joel page that looks at the different rankings….and then Joel’s contributions to the page will only be seen on the About page. I bet these are happy days for you….lol. Good feedback.

  3. i saw 3 of top 6. hustle, last metro, repulsion. no 10s, no 9s, no favorites. not a polanski fan repulsion repulsed me a 2/10. she is a strikingly talented actress.

    1. Hey bob cox…..thanks for the feedback on Catherine Deneuve. I also was not too impressed with Repulsion. I liked The Last Metro much more. Good stuff as always.

  4. Hello Bruce,
Eddie Constantine, super, but you know he was américan and he made the major party of her career in France where he was so popular in the 50 and the middle of 60.
Lemmy Caution he was on screen, I don’t think the films were on the market in USA but maybe, but he was famous with that American accent in every words he said in all his films.
Like Maurice Chevalier but on the other side.
I was too young but I remembered him, because first of all he was a singer, and there is song which is quite famous, That everybody was singing at that time.
Cigarettes whiskys and petites pépées, easy for the first two words, and the last you can translate by Baby Doll, I think.
And Belmondo Good News too he was number one during twenty years, not so bad.
And he plaid commercial films and art films too.
    A very great actor.

    1. Hey Pierre. Thanks for the information on Eddie. He is probably one of the few American actors that is pretty much unknown in the states while being a superstar overseas. I think Clint Eastwood had that for awhile with his spaghetti westerns. I am hoping to find at least 10 of his movies that played here. Thanks for sharing your movie memories of him and Maurice. I am working on a Bela Lugosi page currently, I will then probably turn my attention to Mr. Eddie. Good stuff.

  5. Hello Bruce,
Catherine Deneuve is a great actress, but she is very very good in comedy.
La vie de château for instance, Potiche in the last years…
Her sister Françoise Dorleac, died by crash car in the middle of 60, was very good too in comedy and L’homme de Rio with Belmondo stay a good movie even with time.
Deneuve started her career at the end of the 50 and the success came fast.
Good movies, good directors good choices.
The other great actress at that time was Romy Schneider, she was very famous because she plaid the empress Sissi in German films ( Elisabeth from Austria) and it was an international succès, and then she made a very great career in France with great box office and great films, unfortunetly she died in the middle of 80.
Le dernier métro is the film which definitely gave to Deneuve her right place.
We are waiting her come back.
    Bye
    Pierre

    1. Hey Pierre….thanks for checking our Catherine Denueve page. Sadly many of her movies are missing, but I think 50 was a good number. Two more French actors are coming soon Jean-Paul Belmondo (mentioned in your comment). and Eddie Constantine. I did not know her sister had died in a car accident. I like the comparison to Romy Schneider. I agree she was awesome in The Last Metro. I have not even heard of the movie she got Oscar nomination…1992’s Indochine. Like you I have enjoyed her comedy movies….the movie I will also remember is her role in The Hunger….that movie really caught the attention of pre-teen Cogerson…lol. Good feedback.
