Conrad L. Hall Movies

Want to know the best Conrad L. Hall movies?  How about the worst Conrad L. Hall movies?  Curious about Conrad L. Hall box office grosses or which Conrad L. Hall movie picked up the most Oscar® nominations? Need to know which Conrad L. Hall movie got the best reviews from critics and audiences and which ones got the worst reviews? Well you have come to the right place….because we have all of that information.

Conrad L. Hall (1926-2003) was a 10-time nominated, 3-time Oscar® winning cinematographer.  In 2003, Hall was judged to be one of history’s ten most influential cinematographers in a survey of the members of the International Cinematographers Guild.  His IMDb page shows 43 cinematographer credits from 1958 to 2003.  This page will rank 26 Conrad L. Hall movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information. Television shows, shorts, videos and some of his early low budget movies were not included in the rankings.

Drivel part of the page:  Over the weekend, I watched 1965’s Morituri starring Marlon Brando and Yul Brynner for the first time.  One of the things that caught my eye watching that movie, was the many awesome camera shots in the movie.  When I looked up who the cinematographer was…I was pleasantly surprised to see (a) the cinematographer was Conrad Hall of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) fame and (b) that Morituri was the first of 10 Oscar® nominations for Hall.  This got me thinking (not always a good thing). Generally, we only write UMR pages on actors and directors.  We have over the years written a few “technical” pages……Costume Design (Edith Head), Writing (William Goldman & Neil Simon) and Composers (John Williams & Hans Zimmer).  So we figured it was time to give some love to cinematographers….which is why we now have a Conrad L. Hall page.

  1. I have seen 13 [ie 50%] of the movies listed above and my favourites are the less important ones Jennifer 8 and Black Widow. I have never been a big Butch and Sundance fan

I note that you have been watching Morituri [initially titled “The Saboteur Code Name Morituri]. I found it just OK but the famed historian David Shipman thought it was highly underrated and said that as a seafaring yarn it “is worth a dozen Ship of Fools” [out the same year and starring Vivien Leigh and Lee Marvin].

Your box office figure and my own direct experience suggest the public didn’t agree with David. I saw the movie in 1965 in Gloucester England when I was serving with the British Armed Forces. It was taken off after 3 days for lack of audiences whereas it was initially scheduled to last a week.

According to Yul’s son [Rock Brynner] it was one of those movies where Yul “sold his billing” – ie took 2nd billing for a payment of $200,000 [about $1.6 million today] on top of his normal basic fee. In a radio interview that I heard years later Yul said that Brando was one of his very own fave actors. Lovely Janet Margolin, who if I recall correctly, was gang-raped in the movie died prematurely aged 50 in 1993 with ovarian cancer.

    “Ave imperator, morituri, te salutant.”
[“Hali emperor those who are about to die salute you.”]

Conrad is credited with 29 awards and 31 noms and his net worth is said to be between $2.5 and $5 million.

    1. Hey Bob. Tally count….Bob sitting in 2nd place….me 19, you 13, Flora 12 and Steve 11. We will have to disagree on the merits of Butch and Sundance….I have that western on my all-time favorite movies.

Morituri was better than I thought it was going to be. First half was really interesting…but as Brando kept picking up allies…the movie lost steam….but it got me motivated to do this Hall page.

      1. Hey Bob part 2…… good points about Brynner and Brando. You have correctly translated the meaning of the movie title. Good feedback as always.

      2. HI BRUCE

Thanks for the feedback. I am not challenging the technical quality of Butch & Sundance nor its great entertainment value for others. It’s just that I was not a fan of the buddy-buddy movies to begin with and my aversion to them was compounded by the, in my view, a** getting torn out of them not only at the cinema but also on TV [Starsky and Hutch, Alias Smith & Jones etc] so that for me they became even more boring.

It’s a bit like you prefer your coffee with sugar and I don’t: personal taste. Anyway I hope you’re enjoying your break. Take care

        1. Hey Bob….understood…..I think this is the first time we have not seen eye to eye….lol. My break is going very well…..we will be on the road for almost two weeks…with a pitstop back home for one day. Interesting take on “buddy movies”. Thanks for the feedback.

  2. Good subject Bruce, Conrad Hall was highly respected. Come to think of it those films did ‘look’ great. I watched Road to Perdition again recently and the photography was striking.

I’ve seen 11 of the 26, favorites are – Butch Cassidy, Hell in the Pacific, Cool Hand Luke, The Professionals, Marathon Man, American Beauty and Road to Perdition.

I’ve also seen – In Cold Blood, Jennifer 8, Tell Them Willie Boy is Here and Tequila Sunrise.

Okay a sunset scene, but was there a sunrise scene in Tequila Sunrise? Do you see them drinking that cocktail in the film? I can’t remember, it’s been a while. 🙂

Butch Cassidy was a monster at the box office late 60s early 70s. Steve McQueen must have been kicking himself.

    Nice work Bruce. Vote Up!

    1. Hey Steve. Thanks for checking out our first cinematographer. I think he had a good personality away from the big screen. Pretty sure he had a DVD commentary on Butch and Sundance.

Tally count me 19, Flora 12 and you 11. I have seen all of your favorites with the exception of Hell in the Pacific….which I will see in the near future.

Good any funny point about the title…..Tequila Sunrise…..maybe Tequila Sunset would have done better at the theater with that name….lol.

  3. Tis a pity the 1994 Love Affair is at the bottom. It features some of his most beautiful work, and is actually a pretty good film.

    1. Hey cinema international…..I agree Love Affair looks amazing….but it did not fare well with critics or movie paying audiences…..thanks for stopping by.

  4. I have never heard of him,but I know his movies. That is an amazing scene from Tequilla Sunrise it looks amazing. 10 nominations in 26 movies, that is almost Streepian.

    1. Hey Taylor….well I am glad this page got you award of Mr. Conrad Hall. I think the scene in Tequila Sunrise is one of my all-time favorites scenes….it just looks so awesome. I agree his Oscar nominations to movies made is very impressive. I think Streep still has a better percentage. Good feedback. – From Rocket City – Alabama 7/4/19

    1. Hey Flora. Thanks for the feedback on our Conrad Hall movie page. 12 is pretty stout…..but a little behind my 19 seen. 90% of his Top 10 probably means you watched the right ones. I thought A Civil Action was pretty good. One of my favorite Travolta roles. I have seen all of your favorites….with Cool Hand Luke, Butch and Sundancde and Road to Perdition being my favorites as well. I have not seen Divorce American Style or Hell in the Pacific…..I would like to see Hell in the Pacific. Good stuff…as always. – Cogerson from Rocket City on July 4th 2019
