  1. .I will always remember David Warner for his 2nd and breakthrough film Morgan because it was released in 1966 and that was a big year for me as it was the one in which I re-joined the civilian world after a 5-year stint in the British Royal Air Force, protecting the world so that guys like Steve could sleep-well in their beds at night.

When it was released the film was actually given its full title of Morgan: A Suitable Case for Treatment, so called because David Warner’s Morgan was an erratic character who lived in a fantasy world. [You know: a world where Joel Hirschhorn is THE top film critic].

The film was one of the famous British rather drab if highly artistic at times “kitchen sink” dramas that were so popular in the late 1950s and the 1960s.

Richard Burton’s Look Back in Anger which fashioned the “angry young man” of culture was another example of the series. Americans probably didn’t like the series because traditionally Americans supposedly “do not like losers”.

In recent years I have become unfamiliar with David’s cinematic work but I have in the past 10 years seen him in 2 TV movies in reruns of the Perry Mason series of 1985-1995 starring the 100% Canuck Raymond Burr. The two movies were 1990’s The Case of the Poisoned Pen and 1993’s The Case of the Skin-Deep Scandal.

Bearing out what The Work Horse says above about undesirable characters being David’s stock in trade here is a synopsis of the plot of The Case of the Poisoned Pen in which David plays the odious Bradley Thompson:

“Bradley Thompson, a famous crime writer, is in town to collect an award for his latest book. However he is a fraud. Bradley takes information, book plots and sometimes the entire book from other people and gets them published under his own name and enjoys the credit when they become bestsellers. So naturally Bradley is murdered for revenge and as usual Perry steps up to the plate to defend an innocent who is accused of the murder .”

All that I can immediately recall about The Skin-Deep Scandal is that two of ‘Hitchcock’s Children’ were in it. Raymond of course from Rear Window and in a small role Tippi Hendren from The Birds and Marnie.

[COINCIDENCE: Sadly Raymond Burr died before completion of the final 4 in the Perry Mason TV-movie series of 30 entries and other actors stood-in for him in those 4. One such actor -in 1993’s The Case of the Wicked Wives – was Paul Sorvino whose memory this site has also been honouring as I write.]

According to Celebrity Net Worth site David leaves behind a net worth of $8 million.

    1. Hey Bob…thanks for sharing your thoughts on the late David Warner. Morgan! is considered a cult classic…and a movie that I have been aware of for a very long time. I actually on my one viewing, was not impressed. Probably need to see it again. Good information on his Mason connections, net worth and kitchen sink movies. Rest in Peace David Warner.

      1. HI BRUCE

        Thanks for your considered response.

I agree that Morgan was “dry goods” as a film. Indeed nearly all the kitchen sink dramas were drab- full of loser and not winners like The Duke, John McClane and Laddie!!!

One of the few exceptions was Alfie but Caine’s magnetic performance made that one highly entertaining and unusally for a kitchen sink flick it was in colour . Nevertheless it is categorised as a vintage kitchen sink offering.

        Take care.

  2. I have seen 30 of David’s films; the highest ranked I have not seen is Providence.

As I said earlier, David is # 205 on the 2021 Oracle of Bacon Top 1000. These are the other actors on the list he appeared with.

    1. Hey Dan. Good information on the late David Warner. Your tally has me topped by 12 movies…30 to 18. He is well represented in the Oracle rankings. A little higher than I would have guessed…especially since his peak movie making days were more than a few years ago. Ian Holm, with 5 movies, gets the most frequent Oracle co-star award. 37 Oscar winning co-stars is good..especially when so many of his English movies probably did not draw too many stars into the production. It seems like Warner and Sorvino have many things in common….sad that they both passed so close to each other. Good stuff. RIP Mr. Warner.

  3. He played some of my favorite characters & villains — but none greater than his role as Evil in Time Bandits.

  4. I have seen 18 of these movies. My Top 5 would be: Time After Time….I think it is his best performance, Time Bandits….silly but fun movie to watch, The Island….saw this one in theaters…it scared the hell out of me….but this bomb has turned into a cult classic, Star Trek VI….the last movie for the original crew….he played a different category in Star Trek V, and Titanic….he has a small role….but it is well done. Rest in Peace Mr. Warner.

    1. Hey Mark. His heyday as a movie bad guy was the late 1970s and early 1980s. Time After Time is probably his best role…as he gets to play Jack the Ripper, battle H.G. Welles and time travel.
