this is my first time to comment on UMR’s donald sutherland page. i was not commenting regularly in 2016. i saw 31 including 20 of top 21. 10s and favorites: kelly’s heroes, animal house, mash, a time to kill. 10 not favorite dirty dozen. 9 and favorite space cowboys, 9s not favorites cold mountain, bedford incident, JFK, ordinary people. hidden gems: 6 degrees of separation 7, backdraft 8, a dry white season 8, the eagle has landed 8, reign over me 8, the best offer 8, pride and prejudice 8, the first 3 of hunger games series , all 8s (last hunger games mocking jay 2 a 6).
i love donald sutherland’s acting. he seems to make every movie better. of 31 of his efforts that i’ve seen only one is less than a 7, that means an incredible 30 were worth watching. in addition , i just added several to my watchlist. thanks UMR, Thanks Cogerson. Hey bob cox….thanks for checking out our Donald Sutherland page. So, I like you went and checked out the older comments, mainly to find my tally count back in 2016. Back then my tally was 44, today it is at 50. So I have your total slightly beat. Lots of 9s and 10s from you. I am right there with you on Kelly’s Heroes and Space Cowboys. WoC and I recently watched those two movies…she had not seen either of them. I love Backdraft as well. I actually watched Backdraft 2….it is not very good….which makes my tally actually 51…as that one is not listed here. Good comment.
Hey Steve, I’ll add my voice to complement you on preparing an entertaining look at the career of Donald Sutherland, one that even has Bruce paying homage to his partial Canuck roots 🙂
It’s particularly timely after Christopher Plummer to recognize another Canadian who made it big in Hollywood almost 5 decades ago and who, like Plummer, has remained active and relevant in major films to this day. In recent years, there have of course been many Canadians who have found stardom in Hollywood, but Plummer and Sutherland were among the first. Before them, there was was of course Glenn Ford (even though Bob unjustly questions his Canadian credentials on the grounds that in later life Ford believed he had once been reincarnated as a Spaniard – come on, don’t we all believe that?) and even further back, Fay Wray of King Kong fame.
Despite the amusing quote at the start of your video, Sutherland is so talented that he has been able to easily play guys-next-doors types, eccentric anti-heroes, as well as spooky villains. Among my favorite Sutherland films (looking only at the ones in which he starred in are Klute, Don’t Look Now, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and Ordinary People. I think I would have enjoyed MASH more if I had seen it around the time of its release, but by the time I finally got around to seeing it, I found it rather dated and not as enjoyable as the TV series. One notable performance from a film that is missing here is Sutherland’s disturbingly effective portrayal of a fascist in the Italian classic, 1900 – if people think his President Snow in the Hunger Games series is evil, then see Sutherland in 1900 and think again!

Not sure what happened to 1900, was his name further down the credit list? If it’s a film I’m not familiar with I usually check the IMDB credits and if the name isn’t in the top 5 or 7 I may leave the film off my chart. [cue gasps] Blame Bob for introducing me to the power of billing, and it helps speed things up when I’m sorting thru a hundred films.
If I’m on the fence on including a particular film I check several IMDB reviews, and if the actor in question does not get a single mention in any of the comments out goes that film. [cue more gasps] You have to be ruthless! 😉

Just a few words on 1900. If my memory is correct, Donald Sutherland and Burt Lancaster appear at the end of the credits with the typical “and” before their names, so that would explain why they appear last in the IMDB credits. Lancaster is of course great in a small but important role as a patriarch, while Sutherland has a more substantial role, probably about 4th or 5th in terms of its length. I have no clue whether Sutherland received critical acclaim for his performance, but he is quite memorable, particularly in one rather spooky scene. In any case, he has had so many roles that missing one is not a big deal. I just thought it was worth mentioning as the film has quite a reputation, at least in Europe and certainly worth watching…with some patience.
Hey PhilHoF17…I have seen bits and pieces of 1900….it was made during the peak of DeNiro’s career….it is actually amazing the movie is rarely mentioned. Good to know it is more appreciated in Europe. Glad your Hall of Fame status is getting so much play…..pretty soon…..we will be concentrating on the class of 2018….lol.

2. After spending lots of time as a child in Montreal…..I rarely get up there these days….though about 5 years ago when ventured up there.
3. Canada has a pretty good collection of thespians…..Steve just did a video on one of the most popular today…Mr. William Shatner. The “legend” in our house is that Billy Shatner and MoC (mom of Cogerson) actually dated way back in the 1950s in Montreal.
4. I like your favorite Sutherland movies…..I felt his performance in Ordinary People was sensational….how he got no Oscar love is confusing….especially when three other performances got nominations….with Timothy Hutton winning.
5. As for MASH….it has not aged well…..it still has some fun moments…..but it drags through many parts.
6. I have not seen 1900…..but it is one I want to see.
7. President Snow’s last moments are one of my favorite scenes in movies….his laugh right before his death is classic….I won’t spoiler why he laughed….but I liked that moment.

Yes, I liked Sutherland in The Hunger Games as well. The films provided a great opportunity for him to gain wide exposure in the latter part of his career.
On 1900, yeah, it does not make your top 50 Sutherland movies, but that’s because it bombed in the US and received mixed critical reviews there. I would note that on IMDB, the film gets a 7.7 rating from almost 19,000 viewers, though I seem to recall we had discussed this movie’s rating before on the Burt Lancaster page, so I won’t pursue this issue. I am certainly not suggesting a review of your rating as I prefer to keep such requests for exceptionally odd ratings, such as for The Catered Affair, which you graciously revised last week 🙂
Hey PhilHOF17……sadly the rules of the UMR Hall of Fame exclude the “Curators”….so me and WoC are excluded….lol.
The McQueen encounter and the Billy dating are a few of the “celebrity” encounters my family has had over the years. You can add an encounter with Walter Pidgeon….walking alone and looking depressed on a beach. Spencer Tracy used to regularly buy fresh fruit from my grandparents fruit stand in Los Angeles in the 1930s. I met have met Oscar winners Ernest Borgnine, Kim Basinger and Richard Dreyfuss. My mom bought a movie ticket from Joan Crawford (one of the studio promotions was buying your ticket from the star) at one of the really big theaters in New York City). My mom said Crawford was not a happy camper.
So I re-checked 1900…..the IMDb rating is 7.7 in my database….so it has not changed in a very long time. It did not fare well at RottenTomatoes or Roger Ebert. It only did modest at Leonard Maltin and Video Hound…..so I feel the slightly better than a Fresh Score is pretty accurate.
