  1. Thank you for your page on Frances Farmer. I saw many of her films on tv while growing up. She was an incredible actress and beauty who burned out too quickly. I hope she is in a better place, instead of all the turbulence in this world she went through. Rest in peace.

    1. Hey Frank…..glad you like our Frances Farmer page. Great comment on her career. I agree that I hope she is indeed in a better place…Rest in Peace Frances Farmer.

  2. Hi BRUCE: Thank for the feedback (s). Your very first line of this page after your UMR logo and accompanying photos has Frances and then Francis. However provided you don’t start calling Francis the Talking Mule Frances I don’t care.

Good stuff from Pirates of the Caribbean cleverly linked to Joel’s “guidelines”. Still I have long wanted to see Among the Living and the fact is that you rubbish that film whilst Joel praises it and the performances of its stars. Accordingly in reaching a decision about whether I still wish to watch it I am left with a difficult quandary like the one that Sherlock Holmes faced in 1959’s screen version of Sir Arthur Conn Doyle’s The Hound of the Baskervilles.

Peter Cushing as Holmes and Andre Morell as Dr Watson are out on the moors hoping to prevent the massive killer hound claiming yet another potential victim. They suddenly hear the howls of the monster and rush forward to a junction that leads left and right. They pause in the middle of the junction and, as it is difficult to tell the direction from which the howls are coming, an anguished Sherlock pistol at the ready and raised above his head proclaims “Which way Watson? For heaven’s sake which way?”

Frances Farmer had a reported net worth of $700,000 at the time of her death in 1970. That’s worth about $4.6 million in today’s money according to the US Bureau of Labor Stats. However her many personal problems probably ensured that she didn’t enjoy her wealth to any great extent.

    1. Hey Bob….one of the Cogersons that was left behind fixed that pesky Francis error. Thanks for the heads up on that….not sure how I missed that. I would say my sources did not like Among The Living….I am still neutral on the movie. Glad you liked my POTC #1 quote….that is a good movie….so much better than the crap that followed in that franchise. Good quote from Cushing’s Holmes. Not a bad total for Frances…especially when her career got cut so short. Good stuff…..from Atlanta Airport.

  3. Frances Farmer? Is she even on the request page? I can’t imagine she just popped into your head Bruce, Bob’s yeah. 😉

The name is faintly familiar, looking at the chart there is one film I must have seen – Son of Fury – it’s in my collection. My dad was a big Tyrone Power fan (Flynn too) so this was the kind of film we’d watch back in the 1970s when we had just three TV channels to choose from – BBC 1, BBC 2 and ITV.

The only other film I recognise on there is Toast of New York, also in my collection. I may have watched it can’t tell for certain.

    1. Hey Steve. Joel has a page on Frances Farmer….so she has always been on my list of people to do. I do not expect this one to be a massive viewer getter….but her story merits a page. Sadly, I had to rely on the Harrison Reports for most of these Paramount 1930s movies…so I do not feel that confident in the box office totals.

As Dan pointed out…..she was the subject of the Jessice Lange movie Frances. That was easily the career peak for Lange…she got two nominations that year….a Best Actress nomination for Frances and a Best Supporting Actress Oscar win for Tootsie. Tootsie is one of the biggest hits of all-time.

Son of Fury is one of the three Farmer movies I have seen. My three actually leads the way in our tally contest. Cogerson 3, Flora 2, Bob 1 , Steve 1, Taylor 0 and Pierre 0. Nobody really has any bragging rights…lol.

As for Tyrone Power….in my house…..my mom was the Tyrone Power fan….I do not remember my dad talking about Power too much….other than his death while making a movie. Funny about your memory of The Toast of New York….I know I have seen the movie….but I barely remember that Cary Grant movie…and have no memory of Frances Farmer in the movie. Good stuff as always.
