UMR’s Get The Gringo Movie Review

This one really surprised me. Mel Gibson is a blast to watch in this one. His character reminds me of Gibson’s Porter from 1999’s Payback. Since we never know his name in this movie, it is easy to think maybe it is a continuation of that Mel character. This is a compliment because I really like Payback.

In this one, Gibson plays a career criminal nabbed by Mexican authorities. He is placed in a tough prison where he learns to survive with the help of a young boy. The prison is like no prison I have ever seen in a movie. As Mel describes the prison in the movie….”is this a prison or the world’s crappiest mall?”

The twists and turns in the movie are fun to watch. Watching Mel figure how to survive is a fun ride. Some subplots are a little silly, but I was enjoying myself so much, I was able to forgive them. Final thought: A pleasant surprise…more people need to see this one.

  1. Theory: Just rewatched 2012’s Get The Gringo. Is it possible that this is the continuing adventures of Mel’s character Porter from 1999’s Payback? Possible evidence; 1. Both movies have the same type of vibe and themes of payback & revenge. 2. Mel plays an anti-hero in both. 3. Both movies feature a storyline that involves a former partner in crime, betraying him and ending up with his wife. 4. His character in Get The Gringo has no name. 5. Mel gets revenge on his former partner. So is Gibson playing Porter in Get The Gringo? Am I crazy or do others connect the same dots?

    1. This theory is so old as the great “Get the Gringo” is. Its like “Gran Torino” is the sixth Dirty Harry. Or “Enemy of the state” is the Story of Gene Hackmans Character from “The Conversation”. All nice thoughts

      1. Hey Chrischi…..thanks for the feedback…I did not realize it was an old theory. Ever heard these theory. How about Kurt Russell’s Mr. Nobody in the Fast & Furious movies is really Nick Frescia from Mel’s Tequila Sunrise?
