  2. I was always convinced that someday I WOULD hear about him again! I have mentioned before the obscure Mexican extra whom Welles hired for a walk-on part in one of his movies. Orson was being interviewed on TV by a Brit who asked him who he thought was the greatest actor ever.

The interviewer clearly wanted The Boy Wonder [as his pal Joe Cotton nicknamed him] to gush about Lord Olivier or one of Steve’s Limey actor knights [or some overpaid, top-billed Yank like Tracy or Brando] but Orson mischievously debunked the interviewer by saying that Mexican was the greatest ever but hadn’t been interested in acting and had disappeared into obscurity once more to work in the fields back home.

Meanwhile until that mysterious All Time Great resurfaces on this site we have Giancarlo. I welcome his new page as (1) it tells me that I must do more homework as you young whippersnappers are clearly more conversant with the MODERN era of the cinema than I am (2) once again the Cogerson site is demonstrating its remarkable capacity for blending the “lesser” actors of today with those of the past- you are truly “a man for all seasons”!

Looking down your usual comprehensive table I learn that I have seen 6 Giancarlo movies though I wasn’t conscious at the time of who he was.

    Trading Places/Desperately Seeking Myrna/The Usual Joels/Twilight
Alex Cross/Derailed – with Jennifer Aniston hopelessly out of her depth on big screen in the dramatic role as a hooker, but I liked it anyway.

IMDB credits Giancarlo with 11 acting awards and 13 noms. His net worth is said to be $6 million. “Voted Up” for educational value to me. I sign off now as the airport taxi is almost at the door!

    1. Hey Bob……thanks for the visit and the tally….I am enjoying your tally counts……though I wait for a tally count that destroys the rest of us. Tally count: Cogerson 23, Steve 11, bob cox 10, Bob 6 and Flora 5.

Thanks for all the kind words about our varied UMR subjects. I actually did the table for Giancarlo a couple of weeks ago….but then forgot to do his page.

Good story on Orson Welles. Sounds like Welles loved to mess around with people. Who knows…maybe that extra mentioned….moved overseas…..had some kids…and those kids turned to acting…..and just maybe that kid’s name is Daniel Day-Lewis or Colin Farrell. You never know.

I have seen all 6 of the ones you have seen. Good mini-review on Derailed….that was a one and done movie for me. Have a safe trip and fun time on your holiday. Good stuff.

  3. You are on a current actors series , so I have been unable to contribute. However, I have seen 5 of Esposito’s movies, so I decided to comment.

I have never seen Breaking Bad.

    Favourite Giancarlo Esposito movies:

    Trading Places
    The Usual Suspects

Other Giancarlo Esposito Movies I Have Seen:

    Do The Right Thing
    Desperately Seeking Susan
    Maximum Overdrive

    1. Hey Flora….the next UMR subject is a classic actor….an Oscar winner whose last movie was in 1961, which is the year he passed away at the young age of 84.

As for Giancarlo….thanks for the tally count and the visit.

“saaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa” – contribution from my kitten, who is 3 months old and was named Pringle by Emily.

I have seen 23 of his movies…..yet I never noticed him…..and he was in a few movies that I really really enjoyed….Taps, Trading Places, Fresh, The Usual Suspects, Twilight and Do The Right Thing…..actually his part in Do The Right Thing is pretty big. Surprised you saw Maximum Overdrive…..a horror movie and a bad horror movie at that.

Thanks for the feedback…and the visit.

      1. Congratulations on your new kitten, Pringle. My cat Jack died two years ago and I got a Norwegian Forest Cat named Amelia who is grey and white. She needed a new home, because the family’s mother inn law was moving in and is allergic to cats.

As for Maximum Overdrive, I saw it at a birthday party when I was in grade 7.

        1. Thanks Flora….our dog passed away in the summer…..and for the first time in our marriage….WoC and I were petless…..well the little girls (is 12 and 9 still little?) talked us into two kittens a couple of weeks ago….so we now have Pringle and her brother Tom roaming and ruling the house. Ah…..now the Maximum Overdrive viewing makes sense. Good stuff.

  4. I’ve seen 10 of the 36 films on the chart. Favorites are – The Cotton Club, Trading Places, The Jungle Book, The Scorch Trials and The Usual Suspects.

I knew this actor best as the ruthless Gus in the superlative Breaking Bad, a show I was hooked on a few years ago. I’m surprised to see he had appeared in so many films, when I saw him in Breaking Bad I thought he was a new face on TV. I didn’t recollect seeing him before. 🙂

Confession time – I haven’t seen Malcolm X or Ali, and the two were connected.

I did see Spike Lee’s new film Blackkklansman, it was entertaining but Best Picture of the year? I don’t think so. But the Oscars are unpredictable, anything can happen.

    Good stuff Bruce. Vote Up!

    1. Hey Steve. Tally count: Cogerson 23, bob cox 11, Steve 10, Flora 5. I have seen all of your favorites….most I have seen more than once….though….it has been ages since seeing The Cotton Club. I loved him as Gus on Breaking Bad. Gus is why I became so fascinated with Giancarlo….because after watching his run as Gus…it seemed like every movie I watched had him in it. I just recently watched Malcolm X….good Denzel performance….but overall….I was not too impressed with that almost 4 hour movie. I agree about BlackkKklansman…good movie…..but not a great movie. I liked Adam Driver in the movie….but enough to get a Best Supporting Actor nomination?…don’t think so. As always….thanks for the feedback.

  5. I saw 11 including top7. 10 and favourite: usual suspects, bob Roberts( rickman and jack black are perfect). 9 and favourite: jungle book, trading places. 9 not favourite: Malcolm x. hidden gems: ali, smoke, last holiday all 8s

    1. Hey bob cox. Thanks for checking out our latest page. I think Giancarlo is like J.K. Simmons. An actor that was a very busy actor, yet did not catch people’s attention. And know that they are known…thanks to Breaking Bad and Whiplash…..all their older performances jump off the screen when you re-watch those movies. Tally count….23 for me, 11 for you, 10 for Steve and 5 for Flora. Of your favorites…I have not seen Bob Roberts….but it is one I am trying to track down and watch, based on your high regard for that movie. I would highly recommend Fresh….it is a seriously underrated movie…with outstanding performances and lots of twists and turns. Good stuff.
