  2. ADDITIONAL TRIVIA

Another actor whose stock in trade was sneaky villains on screen and who always reminded me in a way of Henry Silva is Eugene Iglesias. Eugene was in droves of westerns in the 1950s and the ones from which I most remember him are Rory Calhoun’s Domino Kid and 3 Audie Murphy flicks – Tumbleweed***/Duel at Silver Creek/Walk the Proud Land. As Bruce shows above Henry Silva was in Audie’s Ride a Crooked Trail. Henry and Eugene were at times interchangeable; but if I recall correctly Henry’s villains were more quick-witted than Eugene’s

[***When I recall that movie I always think of Bruce Cogerson and there are no prizes for guessing why: Tumbleweed is the name of a SUPER-Horse who can outrun all other horses and thus allows Audie to outflank and catch the bad guys when he chases them over long distances!]

Another thing Henry and Eugene have in common is longevity: Henry is still alive at 93 and Eugene celebrated his 95th birthday around last Christmas. He was interviewed about a year ago and now lives in a small American town where he sits on his porch daily sunning himself and chatting to the young girls who continually want to see him because of his past glories and treat him as a “local hero”.

Part of Eugene’s screen persona was the bad guy who is also a ladies’ man and woman-charmer such as his Johnny Sombrero in 1952’s Audie Murphy oater Duel at Silver Creek. Speaking in the interview of those far-off “heartthrob” days and relating them to the young girls who persist in adorning his porch these days he joked “I’m in my 90s now – but they all STILL want me!”

  3. THE 13 HENRY SILVA FILMS BOB HAS SEEN

Hey! I think I have for once beaten Flora by 1 movie – “O day worthy to be marked with a great white stone!”

    Sgts 3
    The Manchurian Candidate
    A Gathering of Eagles.
    Dick Tracy [1990]

***In those days you had to be SOMEBODY to be credited in a Brando film – unlike say in a standard Myrna Loy film. However as Henry was a product of the Actor’s Studio you would have thought Marlon could have been more generous in HIS case at least.

  4. Henry Silva’s heyday as a supporting actor -he never was anything else – was probably in that part of the classic era of the cinema during which I was growing up from the early 1950s until the early 1960s.

I have seen all but 3 of the films Henry made from 1952-1963 that are mentioned in Bruce’s tables above. I have listed those “have-seen” films in Part 2 of this post.

I have seen just one – 1990’s Dick Tracy – of the films with which The Work Horse credits Henry over the rest of his career from 1964-2001.

Henry’s acting range was limited but he and other supporting actors of his ilk were essential to the style of movies that were made during his heyday; and whilst the big stars obviously carried the films at the box office the Henrys of Hollywood were an essential part of the backbone of the movie world in those times. Certainly he made a great menacing villain as Bruce’s lead-in suggests – so “Voted Up!”

  5. I have seen 12 Henry Silva movies.

The HIGHEST rated movie I have seen is Dick Tracy.

The highest rated movie I have NOT seen is Oceans Eleven – remake.
