Ian Holm (1931-2020) was an English actor on stage and in film.  Holm’s well-known film roles include Ash in Alien, Father Vito Cornelius in The Fifth Element, Chef Skinner in Ratatouille, and Bilbo Baggins in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit film series.   His IMDb page shows 137 acting credits from 1957 to 2014.  This page will rank Ian Holm movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information. Television shows, videos, games, and movies that were not released in North American theaters were not included in the rankings.  To do well in our overall rankings a movie has to do well at the box office, get good reviews by critics, be liked by audiences, and get some award recognition.  This page was written after hearing the sad news of his passing.  June 19th, 2020.

  1. Sir Ian has left behind a net worth of $10 million and IMDB credits him with 20 acting awards/24 noms. On top of his prolific film career comprehensively summarized above Wikipedia lists for him (1) six stage plays from 1960-97 which include a performance as King Lear in 1997; 28 television productions from 1972 -2009 in one of which he played Napoleon in a 9 episode series in 1974.

In my view Sir Ian deserved a Cogerson page at ANY TIME; but this new page is a timely and worthy tribute to him on his sad passing and is “Voted Up!”. My dozen fave Ian Holm performances are as follows:

Nicholas and Alexandra -my 2nd favorite performance from Sir Ian***
    The Madness of King Joel
Lord of War – in the days when Nic Cage’s movies made it to the big screen
    Alien
    Night Falls on Virginia
Frankenstein-did The Monster [DeNiro] use the F word for once in a movie?
    Chariots of Fire
    Juggernaut
From Hell-a contemporary 1983 book was written there
    The Aviator
    Day after Tomorrow
Myrna Queen of Scots – my out-and out favorite Holm role

***I remember watching this the night that the Watergate scandal which destroyed the Nixon presidency broke out into the open and ultimately swept away the President and his entire administration. Within that context the film later seemed to me when I looked back on it very prophetic because Laurence Olivier as Count Witte Nicholas’ Prime Minister warns Nicholas and his supporters who mobilize the Russian Imperial Army against Germany and therefore force it to declare war “When this is over there will not be one of you left standing.”

    RIP Sir Ian.

    1. Hey Bob….good comment on Ian Holm. I enjoyed reading your thoughts on some of the movies you talked about. I will have to check out his version of Mary Queen of Scots. Good story about Nicholas and Alexandra and what was going on in the world. Rest in Peace Sir Ian.

  2. Standing at 5ft 5 Sir Ian Holm may well in terms of screen success have at last been the “British Alan Ladd” that the Brits were looking for throughout the 1940s and 1950s but whom they sadly could never find. Tony Wight ***with blonde hair/Laddish face/and permanently in trench coat lurking in darkened doorways never convinced.

HE didn’t have that American swagger about him that screen tough guys had to have in those days -thnk also of Mitchum’s saunter -and besides Wright was able to keep only London free of gangsters and Commies whereas Laddie policed all the big cities of America and his reach strayed to places like even Saigon/Santiago/Calcutta. NOTE: After falling to the Communists in the 1970s Saigon eventually became Ho Chi Minh City named after the Legendary [or notorious depending on your viewpoint] Communist leader and warrior – though NOT on Ladd’s watch it should be emphasized as Alan sadly died in 1964.

Ian was no tough guy and Ladd on his own could have taken out the Alien; but Sir Ian had a better acting range than Laddie and although big franchises/rip-offs of the past 20 years such as Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit and Harry Potter have never appealed to me I have been privileged to see a lot of Holm’s work and my Top 12 Ian Holm performances are listed in Part 2

***SOME OF TONY WRIGHT FILMS: Tiger in the Smoke/Faces in the Dark/The House in Marsh Road/In the Wake of a Stranger. Check out Tony’s photo on his Wikipedia page to see his remarkable resemblance to Laddie on the head and in the face. Another coincidence was that like Laddie Wright died relatively premature – Alan aged 50 and Tony at 60 from a falling accident.

    1. Apologies to Sir Ian’s memory for my with an unfortunate slip of the pen spelling his name once as Ain in Part 2 of my tribute to his life and remarkable career

    2. Interesting comparison of Ian and Ladd. I will admit I had never heard of Tony Wright before your comment. Good information on his net worth and awards. Good tribute comments on Sir Ian Holm. RIP.

Imagine 2 Oscar winners in Strangers with Candy, a truly wretched film.

    1. Hey Dan.
      1. Thanks for putting together these lists.
      2. Interesting that Sir Ian had a place in the Top 100…..not thinking I would have guessed.
      3. Wow….the first list is massive!
      4. David Warner has the title of most frequent Oracle co-star. Warner’s career has slowed over the years….but for awhile he was the go to British bad guy….lol.
      5. 44 Oscar winning co-stars is above average….lots of legends here.
      6. Strangers With Candy is one I have not seen….looks like that was a wise decision on my part.
      Good stuff as always.

  4. RIP Ian Holm.

I’ve seen 28 of the 55 films on the chart. Favorites are – Alien, Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, Greystoke, Time Bandits, Brazil, Ratatouille, The Aviator, The Day After Tomorrow and The Fifth Element.

I watched Alien again earlier this year, one of my all time favorite movies, Ian Holm is the third actor of the cast to die, John Hurt and Harry Dean Stanton both died in 2017.

Holm had an earlier connection to Lord of the Rings, he played Frodo Baggins in a major 26-part BBC radio dramatization in 1981. Bill Nighy played Sam.

A nice tribute Bruce. Vote Up!

    1. Hey Steve….our tally counts are tied with 28….that does not happen too often. I have seen all of your favorites…with The Fifth Element, Time Bandits and Brazil being among my favorites as well. Interesting to know that 3 Alien alumni have passed already……but that movie is over 40 years old. I had never neard about the 26-part BBC radio dramatization in 1981. Sounds interesting. Thanks for the kind words. Rest in Peace Sir Ian Holm.
