  1. Hey Dan. Thanks for the Oscar winning stars for these composers. Between Steve’s composer videos and your massive fun lists…thinking I should do more composer pages. I think right now…we have this John Williams page and a Hans Zimmer page….and that is it. James H. Elmer B. and Jerry G. would make some excellent pages…and they would be filled some awesome movies. So Elmer B. has the most of these 4 legends….makes me wonder how many Alfred Newman has. I can imagine you have lots of stories from your BMI days. Thanks for sharing these lists and some of those BMI stories.

  2. Take that Sir Michael, John Williams has worked with 79 Oscar winners (scoring pictures they were in).

    2. Hey Dan…..that is a very impressive list for Sir John Williams. I think…..though I am biased….Michael Caine’s total is more impressive. I would bet Caine has actually met and knows most (but not all) of his Oscar winning co-stars. I imagine many of these Oscar winners listed above, might have not even had the chance to even met this legendary composer. Good list….thanks for sharing it.

  3. 1 HI WORK HORSE Nice birthday tribute to John Williams showing once again the versatility of your site in covering branches of the film industry other than the acting one.

2 In terms of consistent quality and prolific output John was a REAL contributor to the musical aspect of movies. Certainly although John was simply nominated for the scores of Towering Inferno and Poseidon Adventure I thought he more deserved an Oscar outright than did the Committee of 2 for the songs from those movies albeit in a separate category.

3 However justice overall of course was well done because those 2 Oscars and 2 nomination were ALL that the Committee of 2 ever won whereas Williams personally had a staggering 33 Oscar Nominations and 5 wins. As Mr Demi Moore taunted the villain with at the end of Striking Distance when Mr Moore at last beat the villain at his own game “Who’s the best now!?”

4 My personal favourite Williams sound tracks were from (1) Star Wars where his music captured the entire flavour of the outer space and its wars themes of that movie (2) the 1978 Superman where John’s score perfectly reflected the great powers and dynamism of the film’s central character.

5 You might well imagine the impact on me when sitting in a cinema in Dublin in 1978 and watching the trailer for Superman, among the names that kept shooting out of the screen accompanied by John’s dramatic music were Mumbles and Charlie Bill Stuart. It was as if John’s stirring music was confirming that those two screen heroes of mine were in fact “superheroes!” Anyway your comprehensive profile of John is “voted up” Work Horse.

  4. His AFI tribute has happened and been recorded and now we just have to ait until it airs on television.

    1. Hey Steve….thanks for sharing the link….I imagine it is time for an Honorary Oscar soon. Williams and Spielberg are lined up to do the next three movies…Indy 5, BFG and Ready Player One. So Williams missed 1985’s The Color Purple and 2015’s Bridge of Spies….I hope the next Spielberg movie he misses will be 2045’s Indy 12…lol.

      1. This is the first time an AFI award has been given to a composer.

Maybe this is a sign of future awards to composers as well.
