Julie Andrews Movies

Julie Andrews in 1964’s Mary Poppins

Want to know the best Julie Andrews movies?  How about the worst Julie Andrews movies?  Curious about Julie Andrews box office grosses or which Julie Andrews movie picked up the most Oscar nominations? Need to know which Julie Andrews movie got the best reviews from critics and audiences and which got the worst reviews? Well you have come to the right place….because we have all of that information and more.

When it is time to pick out the next subject for one of our movie pages we do two things.  The first thing we do is look at our Request Hotline page.  The second thing we do is try to figure out how much work will be required to write and publish that page.  Thankfully as our database has grown over the years, it generally has been easier to write a movie page.  Nowadays about 50% of the latest subject’s movies are already done and need no further research.  Well….when looking at the career of Julie Andrews (1935-) we saw that we had an amazing 85% of her movies already in our database and only needed to research 4 movies.  So given the fact that a few people had requested an Andrews page and that almost all the work was done….we decided to do a Julie Andrews Ultimate Movie Rankings page.

Julie Andrews is an English film and stage actress, singer, author, theater director and dancer.  During her entertainment career she has won an Oscar®,  a BAFTA, five Golden Globes®, three Grammys®, two Emmys®, the Disney Legend honor and the Kennedy Center Honors. In 2000, she was made a Dame by Queen Elizabeth II for services to the performing arts.  Andrews has not one but two iconic movie roles….1964’s Mary Poppins and 1965’s The Sound of Music.  50 plus years later and both of those movie performances are still talked about today!

Her IMDb page shows over 48 acting credits since 1949. This page will rank Julie Andrews movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information.  Cameos and television roles were not included in the rankings.  Her numerous voice only roles have been given their own separate table.

  1. She is such a beautiful lady and her movies are just one’s you can watch over and over. .Sound of music is my favorite of all movies made.

    1. I agree with you 100%….The Sound of Music is played every year at Thanksgiving at our house. I bet my wife has bought that movie at least 5 times. VHS, Laserdisc, DVD, Special Edition DVD, Blu-Ray….Sound of Music 3D is probably coming out soon…lol.

  2. Hi, Bruce.

Glad to see that the comment function is fixed.

RE: live action vs. voice-over animation:
Although I am a fan of Julie Andrews, I am not familiar with with her voice-over animated films. (I’ve never been one for watching sequels, so I’ve only seen the first Shrek film.)

Thus my Julie Andrews total will be lopsided. Regarding her live action films/roles:

The highest rated film I’ve seen is Mary Poppins at Number 1.
The lowest rated film I’ve seen is Darling Lilli at Number 13.

    I have seen 4 of Julie’s top 5
I have seen 8 of her top 10
I have seen 10 of her films overall. Really. You win.

Again, it’s a matter of seeing certain films multiple times, making it seem like I’ve seen more different films than I have.

Ever since I was Sister Sophia in The Sound of Music I view the film from a different perspective than I did before. I’ve found that true of any of the musicals I have been in. I’m not sure therefore where to place that film in my top 5, and so I’ll list them alphabetically.

My favourite film of hers is Victor/Victoria.

    Mary Poppins
    The Sound of Music
    Victor/Victoria

I wish I enjoyed Thoroughly Modern Millie and Star! more than I do, but they both seem a bit long and boring in some places.

I am surprised that she was chosen for Torn Curtain. It’s an odd film that works in some places and doesn’t in others.

I quite enjoyed watching a live tv broadcast of her her and Christopher Plummer in On Golden Pond.

I must confess that I have a difficult time watching her musicals without feeling sad since she lost her singing voice.

    Cheers,

    1. Hey Flora….thanks for stopping by.
      1. The comment box disappeared for awhile and when they came back they brought these musical monster icons….pretty sure the wife did that….I will be curious if the icon changes every time you do a comment.
      2. Tally count….I am on a roll…Bruce 17, Steve 12 and you 10.
      3. I am guessing the missing Top 5 movie is Hawaii….that is a pretty movie to look at….but it is long and boring…Charlton Heston appeared in the remake.
      4. That is cool about how playing a character in a play has changed your view of the movie…very impressive.
      5. Glad to see both James Garner/Andrews movies in your Top 5….they made a third movie….but it was a television movie that did not get included in the rankings….my mom says that one is a good movie too.
      6. I thought Thoroughly Modern Millie was ok….but I was disappointed….I am a huge George Roy Hill fan….but that was not one of his better movies. Star! got 7 Oscar nominations which made me think I should watch it soon….but your mini review has me thinking I can wait a while longer.
      7. Torn Curtain is very uneven….and disappointing especially with a cast of Paul Newman and Andrews…and directed by Hitch….I think that movie would have been better if Hitch was 20 years younger.
      8. It is very sad about her voice….but it lives on….and will continue to do so for years to come.

  3. “Mary Poppins! Mary Poppins!” And that was in my best Dick Van Dyke ‘cockney’ accent.
Mon Dieu! How successful was The Sound of Music? Over a billion dollars in North America alone! [gasps] If I had to pick one of the two it would be Mary Poppins, up there with The Wizard of Oz as one of the most beloved fantasy films in Hollywood history. I also have a soft spot for Victor Victoria. Andrews also appeared in one of my least favorite Hitchcock films, Torn Curtain. Let’s see I’ve seen just 7 of the 21 live action films you’ve listed and 5 of the voice-only movies.
Confession – I’ve never seen The Princess Diaries 1 & 2. But wait.. I have watched Bridget Jones’s Diaries 1 & 2, he shamelessly admitted, and more than once… thanks to my ex.
Nice tribute to a musical legend Bruce, top marks.

    1. Hey Steve….thanks for checking out my latest movie page. I imagine your cockney accent is pretty damn good especially compared to mine. I know Avatar is currently the king of the box office….but when looking at adjusted box office/ticket sells…Avatar does not come close to the trifecta of Gone With The Wind, Star Wars and The Sound of Music.
I love James Garner’s performance in Victor/Victoria….which is why I return to that movie on a regular basis. Victor/Victoria is by far the highlight of the Blake Edwards/Andrews movies. So your tally is 12….mine is at 17…but we are surprisingly tied at 5 for the voice over roles. The Singing Princess was very hard to find any information on.
My oldest daughter loves the Princess Diaries….I have hear them in the background for years….but I have never actually watched either movie. As always thanks for stopping by and commenting….so are you happy with your monster icon? Not sure what we did to get these icons on the page…but they are growing on me.

    1. I think the best way to describe my ranking is to say they are her movies that performed the best statistically. A combination of box office, reviews and awards….plus there is an added column of box office rank by year….like Mary Poppins #1 in 1964, Sound of Music #1 in 1965, Hawai #1 in 1966 and 10 #13 in 1979. In other words tons of stats to view….not just my rankings.

  4. I like this Andrews tribute but not buying your rankings. V & V not in top 5? That there shows a serious flaw. The Tamarind Seed is much better too!

    1. Hey Disgruntled….thanks for stopping by and thanks for the comment….both are greatly appreciated. I like Victor/Victoria and it did finish in her Top 10…as my previous reply mentioned the rankings are her movies that performed the best statistically. I have not seen The Tamrind Seed but it is one I am trying to track down.
