Well it finally came time to update this page.  Normally we just do the update and move on.  This time we have decided to keep the original page as a reference point for two reasons.  Reason 1:  We will have a reference site that shows how our pages first looked in those early days. Reason 2:  To show just how much is changed when we say we have updated a page.  So to see how things first looked at UMR.com…..follow this link to our Old Liam Neeson page….to see how they now link..just scan down.

  1. Hi Bob, thanks for the review, generous rating, info and trivia, much appreciated.

Happy you liked the posters and stills.

Liam Neeson has been a prolific actor, a contrast to his fellow Irishman – Daniel Day-Lewis. They both appeared on the scene at roughly the same time.

A top 50 video was the right choice for Liam, making it a top 40 would have left out some interesting low-rated movies. A couple of them favorites of mine.

Two films scored 10 out of 10 from my sources – Schindler’s List and Woody Allen’s Husbands and Wives. Two films scored 9 – Gangs of New York and Excalibur.

Schindler’s List tops all the charts including mine and Bruce’s. I’ve watched it a couple of times but it’s not a favorite.

Surprised Bruce has Kingdom of Heaven ranked so low, I know he’s a big fan of that movie especially the director’s cut.

Liam was Spielberg’s first choice to play Abraham Lincoln but eventually the role went to Daniel Day-Lewis – “I don’t feel sad about it, and I have no regrets whatsoever. There comes a point where you think “I’m past my sell-by date” and I passed that about three years ago. It’s just like a light switch went off in my head: it just wasn’t for me anymore. I’d lived with it too long and there was a process happening: Steven would do something else or I would do something else and it was like “Okay, let’s cut this loose.” They got one of the best actors to do it, you know, in Daniel Day-Lewis.”

Liam on working with Julia Roberts in Michael Collins. – ” I was surprised at first when she was cast. I thought, surely there’s an actress in Ireland who can play the role; Neil Jordan doesn’t need this star power. I thought maybe he was going to shoot himself in the foot. But she was very committed to doing it. I thought she was terribly good and I was very proud of her.”

Liam on Taken – “I thought it was going to be a straight-to-video release. That is actually one of the reasons I did it, to be honest. I felt like spending three months in Paris, I’d get to do all this physical stuff that no one would think of me for, and that the film would go straight to video. Then it became this big success. I was a tiny bit embarrassed by it, a tiny bit, but then people started sending me action scripts.”

  4. Liam is arguably one of the biggest box office stars ever to come out of Ireland. He puts a lot back into the community here in the North by for example raising small fortunes in the US for the upgrading/expansion of our local Arts theatre. Liam is probably another Irish actor who wouldn’t have seen eye to eye with The Duke [or Chuck!] about politics –

“Neeson opposes what he sees as the unrestricted right to own firearms in the United States and has made calls for gun control. In January 2015, he repeated his views, calling US gun laws a “disgrace” in an interview with Emirati newspaper Gulf News In response, U.S gun manufacturer Para USA, which provided the weapons used by Neeson in the Taken film series, expressed regret at working with him, saying: “We will no longer provide firearms for use in films starring Liam Neeson and ask that our friends and partners in Hollywood refrain from associating our brand and products with his projects.” – Wikipedia.

Movie business observers suggest that the period between 2008 and 2014 has been Liam’s most impressive period so far at the box office. A close inspection of Bruce’s charts above would seem to support that contention as Bruce’s figures show that in the period Liam was in 6 movies in which he had the top billed lead role and which collectively grossed nearly $1.7 billion worldwide when adjusted for inflation; and a further 6 ensemble films for which The Work Horse gives Liam credit in the period grossed worldwide around $3.6 billion [inflation adjusted].

Liam lived in the early 1980s with prestigious Brit Helen Mirren .IMDB credits Liam with 22 acting awards and 44 noms and he has a reported current net worth of $145 million. He is sure to add to that wealth as he has in the pipeline6 projects at one preparation stage or another; and has been announced for yet a 7th -Marlowe in which he will be the latest actor to play the famous Philip Marlowe if it proceeds.

  5. GOOD AFTERNOON BRUCE
1 Good update on Liam Neeson. He has tended over the years to mix his film appearances so that lead roles have at times gone hand and hand with cameos, supporting parts and/or voice only contributions. Indeed a breakdown in The Numbers of his ACTUAL total domestic grosses shows that nearly half of the latter were accrued by his non-leading role movies. His box office performance over the last few years has not been generally disappointing because though he has had a few respectable hits such Taken 3 and Non Stop he has also had a rash of abysmal grossers like Silence, A Monster Calls and Operation Chromite.

2 Liam comes from Ballymena here in Northern Ireland and the arts in our province and theatre goers in particular owe him a debt of gratitude. As you have mentioned he started out in plays and it would appear that he has never forgotten his roots because in recent times he used his fame and celebrity to engender vital support for local theatre here by for example hosting a star-studded dinner in New York that raiseed $400,000 to help rebuild the prestigious Lyric Theatre in Belfast. He has also become the Lyric’s official Patron and it can be appreciated how helpful it is to that theatre to have a world famous movie star performing that function.

    1. BRUCE – CORRECTION

Para 1 of my previous Liam Neeson post should read box office performance over the last few years HAS been disappointing and the word “not” is incorrect. I’d be grateful if you could remove “not” for me. Many thanks.

    2. Hey Bob
      1. I was about to get rid of the old page…when I thought…I should keep this one around…just so people can see how the new page looks compare to the old page….I personally think it looks 200% better.
      2. As Liam…I agree…he has done a nice job of mixing up the roles…for awhile…it seemed like every movie was a Bruce Willis clone action movie….but after Taken 3 he has stepped back from those types of movies.
      3. I did not even know Operation Chromite existed before doing this update.
      4. So Liam is making the Irish proud? That is cool that he has not forgotten his roots…..and the Lyric Theatre.
      5. I agree his support is a huge plus for them.
Thanks for checking out this updated page…it is always appreciated.
