Lyle Talbot (1902-1996) was an American actor.  Talbot has an incredible 331 acting credits on his IMDb page.  Since many of his performances were on television and low budget “B” movies we were only able to find box office information on many of his movies.  This page will rank 36 Lyle Talbot movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information. Television shows, shorts, cameos and movies that were not released in theaters were not included in the rankings.

Drivel part of the page:  So this page comes from a request by TCM’s Top Billed.  Top Billed is putting together a weekly classic actor/actress series in January 2017.  Week 1 he is looking at B Movie Stars like  Allan Lane; Mary Beth Hughes; Lyle Talbot; Jinx Falkenburg; Tom Conway; Ann Savage; and Robert Livingston.  He asked if we could come up with a page on one of these performers….we picked Mr. Talbot.

Certainly an unusual subject, I guess. You mentioned he was the first, and I think still the best, live action Lex Luther. He was also the first live action Commissioner Gordon in the serial Batman and Robin in 1949. For anyone who desires more info on Talbot and his career than what IMDB provides, I recommend going to “The Files of Jerry Blake” website focusing on serials. Talbot is one of the villains covered. The information and background on any actor who appeared in serials as a major segment of his career is unique in depth and scope at this site.

    1. Hey John…..this was a request for another website…..in the end…. I figured I would include it here….I mean it is 36 classic movies…..but without Top Billed request…..not thinking Mr. Talbot would have had a UMR page until we were in the 1000s of UMR pages versus the 500 we are currently at. So he has a Superman and a Batman credit in his past….that is pretty cool. I will have to check out The Files of Jerry Blake…thanks for the suggestion. Sounds like a pretty interesting site. Thanks for the comment and the visit.

  2. Interesting though I must admit I have always gotten this guy and the guy from Carol Burnett show mixed up. Thanks for eliminating the confusion. Lyle Waggoner was the other Lyle.

  3. Have to confess I’ve never heard of this guy. His face isn’t familiar either. I think we’ve veered into obscure character actor territory. I’ve seen three of those films.

    1. Hey Steve….he was a Warner Brothers star in the 1930s….usually playing second and third leads….when he graduated to lead roles they were in low budget B movies….and then he joined the Ed Wood film company and made history for making some of the worst movies ever. Tim Burton did not include him in Ed Wood….but Talbot was in Plane Nine From Outer Space. My tally is two….and I do not remember his part at all in Three On A Match. I do remember him as the general in Plan Nine. Thanks for checking out this obscure character actor. He did play Lex Luther in Superman vs Atomic Man….he beat Gene Hackman, Kevin Spacey and Jesse Eisenberg to that role by 25 plus years.

      1. Hey Bruce, thanks for the info. Lex Luthor eh? so Lyle Talbot has his place in comic book history. 🙂

The three I’ve seen are – Up in Arms, 20,000 Years in Sing Sing and that multi-Oscar winner Plan 9 from Outer Space.

        1. Hey Steve…..no problem. On TopBilled’s Week 1 suggestion….I felt that I could locate more of Talbot’s movies than anybody else. I did great in the 1930s….but when he got to the 1940s and 1950s I think his movies reached “C” level. One step above what me and the kids film for fun around the house. I think Plan 9 got 4 Oscar nominations…and won the Golden Globe for Best Picture…lol.

    1. Hey BryRog57……he had a long career….but I think the fact that is best remembered for one of the worst movies ever made…might have something to do with why many are not too familiar with him.

    1. Hey Top Billed…glad you like it…sorry it is missing so many movies…but a quick look at the internet and this is the one of the most detailed pages on his career. Thanks for sharing the link.
