  1. Mel could probably best be described as a B list actor who got key supporting roles and invariably lower – but usually in his heyday equal- billing to the top stars in the movie. For example in 1957’s The Sun Also Rises he was a boxer and got billed after Ty Power and Ava Gardner but above the “has-been” Errol Flynn a demotion which Flynn is said to have fruitlessly resisted. When the Hollywood Big Boys consign you to lower billing
there’s nothing you can do about it as Myrna Loy could have testified.

In 1956’s War and Peace Mel was the 3rd wheel and billed third to his wife Audrey Hepburn and Hank Fonda. It was the fate of Hollywood leading men/supporting actors who married greater female stars to suffer certain indignities such as being called for example Mr Bette Davis [Gary Merrill] Mr Joan Crawford [Franchot Tone] Mr Shirley Temple [John Agar] and Mr Audrey Hepburn [Mel Ferrer] in the way that possibly some regulars on this site think of the Work Horse as Mr Debbie Cogerson.

    I have seen/heard Mel in 10 movies:

    War and Peace
Wait Until Dark-Audrey in the lead; Mel uncredited and voice only
    The Sun also Rises
Charade-Audrey and Al Leach were the stars; Mel uncredited
    Fall of the Roman Empire
The Vintage-on double bill here with Lana Turner’s “Diane”
Knights of the Round Table-Mel 3rd billed
    Scaramouche – Mel 4th billed
Rancho Notorious – Mel supported Dietrich and Arthur Kennedy
Saadia – on a double here with Widmark’s “Take the High Ground”

I last saw Mel recently in a 1973 Columbo episode “Requiem for a Falling Star” in which Mel is a seedy gossip columnist who is blackmailing guest villainess Anne Baxter.

    “Voted Up!”

  2. Mel Ferrer, good actor, good subject.

Have you got a page on his famous brother Jose? [Bruce growls]

I’ve seen 9 of the 35 films on the chart. Favorites are – Nights at the Round Table, The Longest Day, Scaramouche, Fall of the British Empire and Brannigan.

The sword duel between Mel Ferrerer and Stewart Granger in Scaramouche might be the longest on film, and one of the best.

The musical ‘Lili’ Mel’s best reviewed film? Oh the humanity! 🙂

    Good stuff Bruce. Vote Up!

    1. STEVE
By the way there’s an old saucy line that goes “Once a Knight always a Knight but once a night is enough!”

Anyway I’m off to bed now so good knight to you.

PS As we know Jose Ferrer was George Clooney’s uncle. Are you now suggesting that Mel Ferrer was also Gorgeous George’s uncle?

      1. Hi Bob, I was teasing Bruce with that line on Jose Ferrer but you took the bait instead. 🙂

Did you know cousin Mel (stop it Steve!) had once directed Jose in a 1946 stage play of Cyrano de Bergerac? As you know Jose later won an Oscar for the film version of Cyrano.

        1. HI STEVE: Is the WH actually reading enough of our posts to take ANY bait: did he even see your quip about Jose/Mel? I can quickly if you wish direct you to 15 recent posts of mine that are now history but none of which ever received even a nominal thumbs up.

I was unaware of the Cyrano/Mel trivia. Thanks for sharing it. Jose seems to have dined out on Cyrano in the way that Yul dined out on The King for years.

I for one am in fact glad to see you injecting more humour into your posts as I like your sense of humour and feel you should indulge in more of it. It’s a refreshing contrast to guys like Joel and his disciple who seem to take everything about movies as if it were life or death.

    1. Hey Dan. As always….thank you for putting all of this together. I guess all of his movies made overseas really helped his Oracle ranking. There were probably 20 movies that never saw the light of day in North American theaters. Good ole Henry Fonda gets the honors as most frequent Oracle co-star with 4 movies. Looking at his Oscar winning co-stars, 18 is a very very low number. Good information as always.

  4. I have seen 14 Mel Ferrer movies, including 9 of the top 10.

The HIGHEST rated movie I have seen is The Longest Day.

The highest rated movie I have NOT seen is Lost Boundaries.

The LOWEST rated movie I have seen is Brannigan.

Favourite Mel Ferrer Movies I Have Seen:

    Lili
    The Longest Day
    Scaramouche
    Sex and the Single Girl
    Rancho Notorious
    Born to Be Bad

Other Mel Ferrer Movies I Have Seen:

    War and Peace
    Knights of the Round Table
    The Sun Also Rises
The Fall of the Roman Empire
The World, The Flesh and the Devil
    Paris When it Sizzles
    Green Mansions
    Brannigan

    1. Hey Flora. Thanks for checking out our latest page. He is the 400th Joel subject to get an UMR page. Only 10 to go. Tally count: 14 for you and 6 for me. I think I have seen The Norsemen but not 100% sure. I really liked Lee Majors back then, so I am thinking I saw it, but no memory of it so I did not count it. I have seen two of your favorites…The Longest Day and Scaramouche. I really enjoyed Scaramouche…a great movie that hardly ever gets mentioned these days. I have seen three of your other movies. Good stuff as always.
