Monty Python Movies

Want to know the best Monty Python movies?  How about the worst Monty Python movies?  Curious about Monty Python box office grosses or which Monty Python movie picked up the most Oscar® nominations? Need to know which Monty Python movie got the best reviews from critics and audiences? Well, you have come to the right place….because we have all of that information.

Monty Python was a British surreal comedy troupe who created the sketch comedy television show Monty Python’s Flying Circus, which first aired on the BBC in 1969.  Following the success of their television show, they turned their attention to motion pictures.  Their show and their movies were written and performed by its members Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin.

This page has two tables of information.  Table one ranks Monty Python movies in chronological order.  Table two ranks Monty Python movies and ALL the other movies made by the six members of Monty Python.  To do well in our overall rankings a movie has to do well at the box office, get good reviews by critics, be liked by audiences, and get some award recognition.

Monty Python And Alumni Movies Can Be Ranked 6 Ways In This Table

The really cool thing about this table is that it is “user-sortable”. Rank the movies any way you want.

  • Sort which Monty Python member was in the movie.
  • Sort movies by adjusted domestic box office grosses using current movie ticket cost (in millions)
  • Sort movies by yearly domestic box office rank
  • Sort movies by how they were received by critics and audiences.  60% rating or higher should indicate a good movie.
  • Sort by how many Oscar® nominations and how many Oscar® wins each movie received.
  • Sort movies by Ultimate Movie Rankings (UMR) Score.  UMR puts box office, reviews and awards into a mathematical equation and gives each movie a score.

  1. Love all the Pythons. Sadly we have already lost a third of them. Their Grail is one of the funniest movies ever made.

    1. Hey Michael S. Thanks for checking out our Monty Python page. I have very fond memories of watching Monty Python and the Holy Grail with my late father and older brother. I agree…it is sad, that 1/3 of the group has passed away. Good stuff.

  2. Wow! You have done a large number of pages recently without necessarily sharing them. It is hard to keep up.

I have seen 8 Monty Python members movies. I have also loved the Fawlty Towers TV series and the Monty Python TV series.

The HIGHEST ranked movie I have seen is A Fish Called Wanda.

The highest ranked movie I have NOT seen is Shrek 2. The only one I have seen is the original Shrek.

The LOWEST rated movie I have seen is Monty Python (Mostly) Live.

    Favourite Monty Python Movies:

    A Fish Called Wanda
    The World Is Not Enough
    Die Another Day
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
    Monty Python’s Life on Brian
    Monty Python (Mostly)Live

Other Monty Python Movies I Have Seen:

    The Fisher King
And Now For Something Completely Different

    1. Hey Flora.
      1. As always….thanks for the visit and for sharing your movie thoughts on Monty Python.
      2. As for the amount of new pages…..many of the new pages are from the Joel book. Lots of them would be considered minor stars….so I figured….I would do the pages…..put them on the New list….and if it is somebody that interests you…there are the links.
      3. I respect thespians like Carrie Snodgress, Robby Benson, Kristy McNichol and others….but not thinking many people are really interested in talking about them currently.
      4. Of the remaining 38 Joel subjects to do….I would say about half of the subjects would fall into this category.
      5. Monty Python….tally count…8 for you….54 for me. I like that the Pythons worked together pretty regularly in non Python parts.
      6. I have seen 5 of the 6 favorites you list….only missing Monty Python (Mostly Live). I have seen one of your two “other movies”.
      Good stuff as always.

  3. Hi Mr. Cogerson,

    Thx

Now back to my concern you had replied in an earlier email and stated that you already had those movies in your database. Years 1929-1931.
I had gone to those years and never saw those movies listed in the years 1929-1931.
So I don’t duplicate my effort, how can I assure that the current movies I am working on will not also be duplicates also?
Do you have a list of what you have and have not posted for those years to assist in my effort?
    Or maybe what you need?
I am up to about 60 movies that I have completed to send, but not all at one time.
    Do you have a answer?
    Please review and advise

    Thx

    Mike

    1. Hey Mike….I think on the last batch of movies you researched, all were not in our database. Their are only about 5 movies for each year that are in the database…..but not fully researched….ones with Oscar nominations or ones WoC pulled the basic information. 60 movies? Very very cool. I am thinking there will be no duplicates. Look forward to seeing the results of your research.

  4. Love Monty Python and John Cleese in particular. Seen all the Monty Python movies.
..and if there’s anybody who hasn’t seen the TV show Fawlty Towers, I strongly recommend it.
To me, one of the best show ever..
As always, a great page, Bruce.

    1. Hey Søren. Good to hear from you. Glad you like this page. I somehow figured out how to take a very easy page to do…..4 main movies….and turn it into a massive 6 page, all day project….but in the end…glad that not only do we have a Monty Python page 9 (Our Cleese page has 56 movies ranked) ….but a page on each Python member.

I have only seen bits and pieces of Fawlty Towers….but I know it has a huge following. I will have to check that show out…after reading your high praise. Good stuff.
