Too Much Too Soon, Man of a Thousand Faces and Gods and Monsters
Hey Princess of Tap….great suggestions…kicking myself for not remembering Man of a Thousand Faces…that is one of my favorite James Cagney movies.
Well, I would, in addition to HELLZAPOPPIN’, add CRAZY HOUSE. The latter is about O&J returning to Universal to make another movie. They’re met with guns! How about THE DEATH KISS?
Thank you Ray F. I will see if I have box office grosses on Crazy Horse and The Death Kiss. Hellzapoppin was a very very big hit back in the day. Once again…thanks for the suggestions.
I have seen 37 of these movies about movies.

Hey Flora…thanks for the rest of the list. So I guess Cinema Paradiso did not register with you like it did me. Which version did you see? The one seen in theaters or the one released by the director? There is a major plot change revolving the Alfredo character….and it changes a lot of the movie. Good stuff as always.
I saw the version released in the theatre. I will try to find the version released by the director.
Hey Flora….let’s just say that Alfredo makes a decision in the director’s cut that influenced the entire plot of the movie….in the original cut…..that decision is unknown….and thus puts the emphasis/blame on another character. Good stuff.
Hey Flora……thanks for the feedback on our Movies About Movies page. Tally count…me 77, Steve 43 and you 37….good totals for everybody. Interesting that you saw exactly 6 movies in each of the Top 30…..it makes the math really easy 60% for each level. I have seen all of your favorites with the exception of the really really old ones…The Cameraman and Free Easy….but I want to see them. In A Lonely Place almost did not make the page…..but in the end…I felt it could not be excluded….that seems more like a character study/mystery than a movie about a movie. Good stuff as always.
If Argo is on the list, then Inglourious Bastards should be as well. Both feature making a fake movie to accomplish another task. The Last Shot also falls into that group.
Hey Taylor….good suggestion. I guess I need to re-watch that QT classic. Seems the movie in that one is a very small part of the movie….while the movie in Argo and The Last Shot is the basis for the entire movie….either….I will check that one out again and see.
That’s a very thorough list Bruce, and all the stats to go with it, well done!
I’ve seen 43 of the 111 films listed, more than I expected, seems movies about movies interest me. Shame I didn’t feel the same way about sports movies. 🙂
Favorites include- Hooper, Argo, La La La Land, The Aviator, Sunset Boulevard, A Star is Born (1954), Singin’ in the Rain, The Artist, Get Shorty, Bowfinger, Silent Movie, Ed Wood, The Stunt Man, Boogie Nights, The Hard Way, Chaplin, Three Amigos, Tropic Thunder and Shadow of the Vampire.
Happy to see my favorite musical – Singin in the Rain – topping the critics chart, and it did very well on the UMR and box office charts too.
I’ve never seen Day for Night, 8½ and Cinema Paradiso. All highly rated, I should check them out some day.
Excellent work amigo. Vote Up!
Hey Steve. Thanks for the thoughts on our Movies About Movies page. I have seen 77 of these movies…a lot more than I thought…but then again….the subject seems to interest me as well….lol. As for your favorites….Ed Wood, Tropic Thunder, Get Shorty and The Stunt Man would be among my favorites as well. Singin’ In The Rain did very well in all categories and picked up an overall Top 5 spot. Hmmmmm….interesting that you have not seen the great overseas classics…Day for Night, 8½ and Cinema Paradiso. Of those 3….Cinema Paradiso is the best….in my eyes…as it is one of the best movies I have seen….heck it had me crying at the end. There are two versions out there…..I saw the director’s cut last….and it has some major….and I mean major changes to the story. Good stuff as always.
