1.  Olivia de Havilland was born in Tokyo, Japan on July 16th, 1916.

2.  When Olivia de Havilland’s parents divorced…she along with her sister and mother moved to California.

3.  Her mother, Lilian Fontaine was also a stage and film actress.  Her sister was Oscar® winning actress, Joan Fontaine.

4.  Olivia de Havilland was discovered while appearing in a college play.  The play was A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

5.  After signing a seven year contract with Warner Brothers….one of Olivia de Havilland’s first movies was A Midsummer Night’s Dream with James Cagney.

6.  Olivia de Havilland was married twice and had two children. Her first marriage to Marcus Goodridge (1946-1953) produced her son.  Her second marriage to Pierre Galante (1955-1979) produced her daughter.

7. On the tabloid side of things…Olivia de Havilland was romantically linked to John Huston, James Stewart and Howard Hughes….not to mention the many rumors around the Errol Flynn/de Havilland relationship.

8. Roles Olivia de Havilland turned down or was seriously considered forDial M For Murder (Grace Kelly part), It’s A Wonderful Life (Donna Reed part), The Maltese Falcon (Mary Astor part), Rebecca (Joan Fontaine part), and A Streetcar Named Desire (Vivien Leigh part).

9.  One of my favorite directors, Alfred Hitchcock, really wanted to work with Olivia de Havilland.  They came close to working together many times (Rebecca, Dial M For Murder, I Confess, Shadow of a Doubt).

10.  At the height of her career….Olivia de Havilland left Hollywood to raise her children.  She would eventually move to France in the mid 1950s.  That is where she still lives today.

12.  At the 60th anniversary for Gone With The Wind…Olivia de Havilland said she wanted to be back for the 70th and 80th anniversary as well.  Well she made to the 70th anniversary.   I am rooting for her to make it to the 80th anniversary.  In 2019 she will only be 103.

13.  After researching this page…I have come to the conclusion that the American Film Institute has made a huge mistake by not including Olivia de Havilland in their list of the 50 greatest screen legends.  In my mind she is on that list!

14. Olivia de Havilland and Errol Flynn acted together in eight movies: The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938), Captain Blood (1935), The Charge of the Light Brigade (1936), Dodge City (1939), Four’s a Crowd (1938), The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex (1939), Santa Fe Trail (1940), and They Died with Their Boots On (1941) Both are also featured in a ninth film, Thank Your Lucky Stars (1943), although in separate scenes.

15. Olivia de Havilland is only the third Oscar®-winning actor to celebrate a 100th birthday. The others are George Burns, who died less than two months after passing the 100-year mark in 1996, and Luise Rainer, who lived to be 104.

16.  Olivia de Havilland has put her longevity down to the three L’s: “Love, laughter and learning”.

17.  Olivia de Havilland starred in eight Oscar® Best Picture nominees: A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1935), Captain Blood (1935), Anthony Adverse (1936), The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938), Gone with the Wind (1939), Hold Back the Dawn (1941), The Snake Pit (1948) and The Heiress (1949). Gone with the Wind  is the only winner.

18.  Olivia de Havilland’s court victory against Warner Brothers in the mid 1940s (many others had sued Warners but failed), which stopped Warners from adding suspension periods to actors’ contracts and therefore meant more freedom for actors in Hollywood. It became known as the “de Havilland decision”.

19.  Olivia de Havilland was nominated for 5 acting Oscars® and 3 Golden Globes®….she won each award twice.

  1. Great trivia. A lot of this I knew, other items I did not know.

    I thought that you were going to have comment boxes only on the main page of an artist. Are you going to move these comments after Olivia’s new UMR format changes are complete?

    1. Hey Flora….that is the plan…..my efforts to update Olivia’s page have been slowed….this little comment…was pretty much a marker so I could find the page once I finish the last two Olivia pages…..with almost 4,000 pages and posts…sometimes I lose track of things I have completed….I guess the negative of getting older…lol.
