UMR Review of Wicked (2024)

What is this one about? This is a prequel to The Wizard of Oz. Elphaba, a young woman ridiculed for her green skin, and Galinda, a popular girl, become friends at Shiz University in the Land of Oz.

My thoughts on this one? This was one of the biggest box office hits of 2024. It is based on a super popular musical. The Wizard of Oz is beloved by millions if not billions. So, obviously, lots of people love this movie. So what do I, Cogerson, think?

The good stuff: The movie looks incredible! The sets, the costumes and the colors jump off the screen. Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande have a very impressive screen chemistry. Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard is great casting. Some of the special effects were impressive.

The bad stuff: I am not a musical fan at all. I found the numerous music scenes tiresome and a little hard to follow. Granted, musicals are my least favorite genres. Shiz University seemed too much like Harry Potter’s Hogwarts. Michelle Yeoh and Jeff Goldblum have very little to do in the movie. It takes almost 2 hours for Jeff to even show up. I did not like the cliffhanger ending. Though I am sure Part 2 is going to be even bigger.

Final thought: Lots to like here. I am sure many young Cogersons are thinking this is the best movie ever made. I would not try to persuade them it is not. As for me, I liked the movie, but have no desire to re-watch this one and will not be racing out to see the sequel.
