Good response to Steve’s video. Also for me your post underlines Bette Davis’ observation before her death about how the bar for stardom has been considerably lowered in the modern cinema.
Davis opined that nowadays a performer has got to be merely associated with a bunch of successful movies to be hyped as a star whereas in her time [whilst supporting actors had their undoubted own great value] the thespian had to demonstrate that he/she could open a string of movies at the box office to be labelled “star”.
Bette went on to suggest that many of the modern cinema’s female “stars” would have been regarded as STARLETS in the era of Bette and her rival The Great Joan, who also had some caustic words to say about the dilution of stardom even toward the end of her own life in 1977.
In the 6 blockbusters in your table that grossed over $300 million Jeff could said to be the star of only one -Jurassic Park Lost World way back in 1997 and it can be argued that the beasties and the franchise brand and not Jeff opened that one.
In the two top ones Independence Day and Jurassic Park 1993 Jeff is OFFICIALLY LISTED as a supporting actor, In Guardians of the Galaxy 2 his part is described as “cameo in closing credits” and in the current Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom Chris Pratt is the star and Jeff is listed 12th in the cast and his role is again officially described as a cameo. In the 2017 Thor Chris Hemsworth is Thor and a 5th billed Jeff has the supporting part of Grandmaster.
All of these movies are of course part of self-selling franchises but I wholeheartedly agree with you that those blockbusters [along with one or two others and perhaps The Fly remake]have made Jeff famous and that he is a great supporting actor. IMDB lists 11 acting awards and 25 nominations across the board for Jeff [though that has to be set against an overall 38 wins and 63 nominations for our Sir Maurice Micklewhite].
However as I also agree with Crawford and Davis about in effect “famous for being Famous” you can understand my addiction to the classic line “The past is a foreign country. They do things differently there.”

When looking at his leading roles…The Fly is his most famous…but I liked Into The Night and Earth Girls Are Easy (ranked way too low here…..lol). Good video on a good subject. Voted up and shared.”

Hi Bruce, thanks for checking out my Jeff Goldblum video, appreciate the vote and share. 24 out of 30 is pretty good, I managed 20 and Flora 4. The Fly is still a big favorite of mine and one of Jeff’s signature roles.
I agree Earth Girls are Easy was rated a little low by my sources. It didn’t do much better on your Goldblum page, 25th on your expanded critics chart. Silverado and The Right Stuff are two more 80s favorites of mine though Goldblum has a smaller role in each.
