Our Ten Worst Movies Of 2023

I watched 565 movies in 2023 or 1.54 movies perf day for the entire year.  Of those movies, 101 of them were made released in 2023.  This is my Top 10 2023 Worst Movies in alphabetical order.

Ant-Man 3. I love me some Paul Rudd. I loved Ant-Man. I thought Ant-Man 2 was entertaining. I really did not like this movie. Rudd/Ant-Man got pushed to the side to focus on, in my opinion, significantly less interesting characters. The Quatumania world was boring. The story really went nowhere. Hell, even Bill Murray is wasted. Final thought: Movies like this make me think that maybe the best days of the MCU are long gone.

What is this one about? I do not know. I do not thing the talented cast in this movie knows. I am not even sure Wes Anderson the writer and director knows.

My thoughts on this one? Very disappointing. I have been a Wes Anderson fan since seeing Bottle Rocket in theaters. It was playing at my local art house theater for a few showings for one weekend. There were only about 7 people in that theater for my showing….so I know not many people can say they saw it in theaters.

Since then, it has been hit and miss with his movies. Loved The Royal Tenenbaums, Fantastic Mr. Fox and Moonrise Kingdom. Most of his other movies fell in the “it’s alright category”. That includes some of his “classics” like Grand Budapest Hotel, Rushmore and Isle of Dogs. As for some of his movies that I did not like….you can put The Life Aquatic Of Steve Zissou, The Darjeeling Limited and The French Dispatch on that list.

So where does Asteroid City fall? Sadly, down there with the movies I did not like. I actually think this is my least favorite Anderson movie yet. I actually am sad about how much I disliked this one. I feel he wasted his best cast yet. About a hour in, I almost turned this off. When it finally ended, I was just glad the punishment was over.

Final thought: One of the biggest disappointments in my movie watching hobby life.

Strange confusing and many times boring 3-hour movie. Somehow this has some great reviews. There is not much that I liked about this movie. Not too many times do I regret spending my time watching a movie, well I did at the 2-hour mark of this one. Final thought: Maybe I am alone on a deserted island, but I did not like this one at all.

Hmmm….this seems to be a little bit of almost every superhero before it. You get a piece of Spider-Man when a young man has an interaction with a bug (though it is an alien bug). You get a little bit of Venom, when the bug works with our hero. You get a bit of Iron Man….rich man builds a ton of tech. A bit of Shazam….as the family gets to play with high end toys and kick some butt. A bit of Batman…especially when they go to the abandoned mansion. I think it has to borrow from this other movies because it does not really have anything new to offer. I do give the producers credit for their very diverse cast….just too bad the movie gives them little to do.

It almost felt like an obligation to watch this movie. At this point there is no believability left in this franchise. All archrivals in other movies are now allies. People killed off before magically return. Every member of Dom’s family (family is said 56 times in this one) all turn into UFC champions when a fight scene comes on. Each supporting character gets a big action scene to prove how bad ass they are…and then they are pretty much never heard from again in the movie. Only Jason Momoa is remotely interesting to watch in this one as the crazed villain….but even he gets tiresome in the second half of the movie. Final thought: It is time to retire Dom and his “family”.

The latest big budget action movie from Netflix. In this one, Gal Gadot plays a James Bond/Ethan Hunt character. The story revolves around a state of the earth technology that can control the world. That plot device has been used before….and better. The action is pretty boring and Fast & Furious believable. Gadot looks bored. Jamie Dornan, who has been growing on me, takes a huge step back with this one. I found the movie very irritating whenever his character appeared. The final 30 minutes seem to have been written by a pre-teen. Final thought: This will probably get a ton of views this weekend, but this is not very good.

I liked the cast. The story was ok. The special effects were ok at best. The length was way too long. I think 30 minutes chopped off would have helped the pace considerable. Another issue is how many characters that are jammed into this movie. A few times characters were gone so long, I forgot they were in the movie. Owen Wilson and LaKeith Stanfield fare the best. Danny DeVito, Jamie Lee Curtis, Tiffany Haddish and Rosario Dawson are pretty much wasted. The reveal of the villain was anti-climatic and left vague of how he took over the mansion. Final thought: Maybe it’s ok, but so glad I did not waste my money by seeing it in theaters.

My history with this franchise. Raiders of the Lost Ark is the movie that got me to love movies so much. Indy 2 was ok but a disappointment. Indy 3 is the 2nd best of the movies. Indy 4 was bad. Indy 5 is better than part 4…..but far behind the first trilogy.

The best parts of this movie are the opening scenes when we get a younger Indy. Harrison Ford as Indy is always pleasing to watch. Sadly, that is all I liked about this one.

Things that bugged me. In many ways they pushed Indy aside so they could shine the spotlight on Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Waller-Bridge plays his goddaughter. Her character is very hard to like. Her character makes a decision involving Indy’s wishes, at the end of the movie, that literally made me mad. The entire movie felt like one scene after another, that showed she is always right & awesome while Indy is an old of out of touch dope. For a franchise that has some of the best action scenes ever, this one has some truly boring action scenes. The CGI is not too impressive…especially for a movie that cost $300 million.

It seemed like the producers only made this movie so they could reboot the franchise with Phoebe as the new Indy, while sending out Indy with a whimper. I for one will not being seeing Indy 6 in theaters. I will just pretend that parts 4 & 5 do not exist and that Indy road into the sunset after part 3. Final thought: Fans of Ford as Indiana Jones will probably not like how this one treats our beloved hero.

Channing Tatum does a lap dance for Salma Hayek. The dance is so good it changes both of their lives forever! The third part of the Magic Mike franchise is not very good. The two leads are good together. The story, however, is beyond ridiculous. Should be the last movie of the franchise.

I really liked the first Shazam movie. I really dislike this one. All the good will earned in the first movie is quickly used in the sequel. Zachary Levi and his super powered family are back. The villains this time are sisters (Lucy Liu & Helen Mirren) whose dad was a god. The villains are not interesting at all. Our heroes seem bored this time around. The grand finale has computer dragons, monsters and unicorns. You can pretty much turn the movie off once that final CGI battle starts….as the results can be easily predicted. Final thought: Once a promising franchise….this was so bad that franchise is now over.
