  3. HI BRUCE: Thanks for the feedback.I have seen a number of the Lawford films in your tables but the only two that I can actually remember him in are Rogue’s March and The Hour of 13, and indeed top marks to you for being able to track down grosses for those two obscure films.

They actually bring back special nostalgic memories for me because (1) I vividly recall watching Rogue’s March as the 2nd feature to Jimmy Stewart’s western The Naked Spur way back in 1953 (2) The Hour of 13 left a great impression on me as it is a creepy thriller about a Jack the Ripper type serial killer and I was only 11 when I saw it.

However, according to Wiki, in today’s money Rogue’s March lost for MGM approx $4 million and Hour of 13 lost for the same studio $2.3 million. Your own figures illustrate perfectly that they were low grossers.

No financial problems for Peter personally though! No doubt partially because of his VIP connections he is said to have been worth $45 million in today’s money at the time of his death in 1984 and reportedly very much enjoyed his money when he was alive.

  4. DOWNFALL OF A GOLDEN BOY by Julia Kuttner

“IN THE Sixties actor Peter Lawford was famed for being the only Brit in the Rat Pack. he ran around with Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jnr and Joey Bishop. A decade earlier he had married into the Kennedy dynasty, the closest thing the US has to royalty, and to the rest of the showbusiness gang he was often referred to as Mr Fix-It, as he could merge entertainment with political power.

Peter and Frank Sinatra first worked together on the film It happened In Brooklyn and though they became friends often fell out. When Frank and Ava Gardner divorced and Sinatra heard Lawford had been seen sharing dinner with her he refused to speak to Peter for seven years. After Lawford failed to get JFK to stay at Sinatra’s Palm Springs house – the president believed it to be unsuitable as a mafia boss had used it a few days earlier – Frank cut Peter off again, tellingly only calling Lawford when he wanted the FBI to intervene when his son was kidnapped.

After JFK’s death Lawford’s support system was collapsing and it was a turning point into a long downward spiral. Doctors told him he would die if he didn’t stop drinking but it took another 20 years before he succumbed on Christmas eve 1984.”

ADDITIONAL TRIVIA – JFK added insult to injury in his rejection of Frankie by going instead to stay with Bob Hope. I never took much interest in Lawford’s big screen career but followed him in the TV series The Thin Man from 1959 to 1961. He was no William Powell but benefitted from a more superior Nora in Phyllis Kirk

    1. Hey Bob…thanks for your thoughts on Peter Lawford. Thanks for all the background on Peter Lawford…he was certainly flying with the eagles for awhile. Good summary of the ups and downs of the Lawford/Sinatra relationship. His film career took a back seat to his personal life….though I do like him in Ocean’s Eleven. Thanks for sharing this info….and now I go to school.

  5. “It’s hard to know what Peter Lawford could have accomplished as an actor — he never had a difficult or dramatically challenging role. However, he played all his middle-of-the-road parts with ease, grace and an understated British charm. …..his career is curious — unlike many great stars, he never gave a bad performance, but he never gave a single moment on screen that made audiences sit up and say, “Good, well done.”” – Rating The Movie Stars Book (1983)
