  1. Peter Ustinov has already been displaced on the top menu by all the stars of the new Avengers film, so I thought I should quickly leave a comment before his UMR page completely moves to history.

Ustinov was of course much more than actor, as your brief description above suggests, but something of an institution of British culture and entertainment (even though his parents were of Russian origin). I’ve seen 9 films on the list (which does not include most of Ustinov’s British films in 1940s), and have found Ustinov excellent in all of them…even as Hercule Poirot, though I agree with Bob that David Suchet provides a more credible and satisfying rendition of the Belgian detective. Favorite films are Spartacus, Billy Budd (which Ustinov also wrote, directed and produced), Topkapi and Death on the Nile. Also enjoyed The Sundowners and Logan’s Run (more when I was kid for the latter).

    1. Hey PhilHoF17
      1. Good to hear from you.
      2. Making this Avengers:Endgame Week at UMR….I figured I should since almost everything I see on the internet right now is something at Endgame.
      3. Thanks for the tally…sorry so many of his movies did not make the page…..that was probably one of the reasons it took so long to get a page on him done.
      4. I will forgive you for typing the following words….”I agree with Bob “…but please do not do that too often…it might go to his head…..lol. In seriousness…I confuse that I have not seen David Suchet’s Poirot….so I will go with you and Bob’s opinion.
      5. Of your favorites……The Sundowners is my favorite…..though his roles in Spartacus and Quo Vadis are my Ustinov roles.
      6. I liked Logan’s Run as kid as well…even watched the television series that aired after the success of the movie….though that show did not last long.
      Good stuff as always.
      6.

      1. Hi Bruce,
        1. Nice to hear from you too.
        2. I do want to see Endgame eventually, but I have a lot of catching up to do with the previous Avengers to truly appreciate it. But I really like the fact that UMR always provides a good balance between the old and the new! I see that Ben Johnson now has a page and will check it out shortly.
        3. It’s understandable older British films would not generate much box office information in North America. As I think Steve once suggested, it may still be interesting to include at least the rating component of such films, though of course, it would screw up UMR score.
        4. Haha, I admit that I often do agree with Bob actually…he may have been off on Steve McQueen and a couple of other things, but generally he makes good sense 🙂
        5. Agree Ustinov was great in Spartacus, ashamed to say I never saw Quo Vadis and interesting you prefer the more relaxed Sundowners – but as a Bob Mitchum fan, it makes sense.
        6. It’s a long time since I thought of the Logan’s Run TV series. Used to watch them as well.
Thanks for your feedback on my thoughts!

        1. Hey PhilHoF17….in the past I have had a different table for just reviews but it did not play well with the main tables so I stopped doing those tables. If I am ever to do a Peter Cushing, Dirk Bogarde or Bela Lugosi page I am going to have to change up things. Been waiting on Bob to create a Dirk B. table since that is one of his favorite actors.

We have always thought it was important to have current and classic stars here at UMR. Will keep an eye out for your thoughts on Ben Johnson. I think I am seeing Endgame Friday evening. I have seen all of the MCU movies except Captain Marvel.

Funny thoughts on Mr. Bob. Good feedback as always.

  2. HI BRUCE: You have highlighted Sir Peter’s professional versatility and the following is an extract from a post that I sent to Steve last year in response to his Peter Ustinov video which was part of the Lensman Brit Greats series for which you helpfully provide a separate Brit actors page and painstakingly added your own comprehensive input.

“As well as being a great actor Sir Peter had a considerable following as a humorist and an avid attendee of Peter’s one-man live stand-up shows was the former British Prime Minister [1970-74] Sir Edward Heath.”

IMDB credits Sir Peter with 20 acting awards and 19 noms. It is said that at the time of his death he left an estate worth a great deal of money but that most of that fortune may well be lost to lawyers’ fees because of a bitter feud among Sir Peter’s surviving relatives about their respective entitlements.

I thought that Sir Peter was badly miscast as Hercule Poirot [in Death on the Nile etc]. Agatha Christie’s Poirot was a physically unimposing, almost comical, figure who for the most part liked to hide behind a great display of politeness and deference to others.

Therefore I thought that Sir Peter [at virtually 6 feet and a heavy man] was too big physically for the part and that he was more domineering than Poirot was supposed to be in the Christie stories. David Suchet who played Poirot in the long-running TV series was I thought the definitive Poirot and he is just around 5ft 7.]
However I otherwise generally admired and enjoyed Sir P [especially as Nero in the 1951 Quo Vadis] so I welcome this new page with a “Vote Up” It excellently complements Steve’s Ustinov video.

    1. Hey Bob….thanks for finding and attaching that “old” comment and including it here. Sadly many of his movies did not make our page….so many international movies that never saw the light of day in North American theaters. Interesting point about Poirot and his physical appearances. Good stuff as always.

  3. Peter Ustinov is # 89 on the December 15, 2018 Oracle of Bacon Top 1000 Center of the Hollywood Universe list. He was not on the later IMDB lists, though he was on back in 2000. He has returned to Wikipedia supplying the info now. These are the other actors on the list he has appeared with.

    1. Hey Dan….thanks for the trivia on Peter Ustinov. Surprised twice by the lists…wow….he is still that high up….I would not have guessed that all. And like you….figured his total would be higher when looking at Oscar winning co-stars. Heck he had 6 with Death on the Nile (a good movie) and Ashanti (a really bad movie). 4 movies with Elizabeth Taylor….that is good trivia. They must have gotten along. Good stuff as always. Thanks for sharing it.

  4. Great to see Peter Ustinov finally get a UMR page. I note that a lot of films are below 60% that I still enjoy more than their percentage suggests I should. Such is the case, I guess, of British actors’ movies. There is a movie not included in this chart called Lola Montez which I have recorded and waiting for me that I have never seen.

I have seen 16 of these Peter Ustinov movies. Nine of them are in the top 10.

The HIGHGEST rate movie I have seen is Spartacus.

The highest rated movie I have NOT seen is Blackbeard’ Ghost.

The LOWEST rated movie I have seen is Lady L.

    Favourite Peter Ustinov Movies:

    Spartacus
    Death on the Nile
    We’re No Angels
    Evil Under the Sun
    Topkapi
    Robin Hood
    The Sundowners
    Logan’s Run
    Billy Bud
    Hot Millions

Other Peter Ustinov Movie I Have Seen:

    Quo Vadis
The Great Muppet Caper – years since I’ve seen it
    Beau Brummell
    Romanoff and Juliet
    Appointment With Death
    Lady L

Regardless of the ratings of movies, I always consider Peter Ustinov movies worth at least one viewing.

    1. Hey Flora. Thanks for the tally, visit and comment. Sadly many of his movies (like Lola Montez) have no North American box office totals. I have seen 12 of his movies, Steve is sitting at 12 as well…so your 16 is the current leader. Of your favorites…I have seen 7 of them with The Sundowners, Sparacus, Death on the Nile and Logan’s Run being my favorites too. Quo Vadis is an epic for sure….but not a favorite. Actually saw The Great Muppet Caper in theaters….not too impressed with that one. Good point about Ustinov and his movies. Not all thespians can be statistical superstars. Good feedback.

  5. The great Peter Ustinov gets the UMR treatment at last. 🙂

I’ve seen 12 of the 33 films on the chart. Favorites include – Spartacus, Quo Vadis, Logan’s Run. Robin Hood, Death on the Nile and Evil Under the Sun.

‘Hammersmith is Out’ is worth a look, Richard Burton plays a sociopathic mental case nutjob and Liz Taylor a bimbo waitress, quirkily directed by Ustinov.

Nice to see Spartacus top all the UMR charts, as it should.

    Good stuff Bruce. Vote Up.

    1. Hey Steve….thanks for checking out this new Peter Ustinov page….which makes me remember you have a You Tube video on him that I should attach. As for the tally counts…you and I are tied with 12….and we both trail that lady from Canada who comes in with 16. Seen all of your favorites…..with only Evil Under The Sun being the one I would not list among my top Peter U movies. I will have to check our Hammersmith Is Out….it got destroyed by critics back in the day…but it could have aged nicely. Yep Spartacs is the easy winner when looking at his movies statistically. Good stuff as always.
