Russell Brand was somewhat of a controversial character as the following examples illustrate:
1/Being somewhat of a “leftie” politically he decided to gather-together a ‘mob’ to picket a High Street bank which he considered was making too much profit at the expense of its customers. The protest stopped the traffic in the High Street and prevented customers from transacting their business over the lunch hour. However the stunt degenerated into a farce when he discovered that he was picketing the wrong bank. The one he meant to target was further down the street and was able to carry-on with business as usual while Russell made life hell for one of its competitors!
2/In an episode of The Russell Brand Show broadcast on BBC Radio 2 on Saturday 18 October 2008 Russell and the presenter Jonathan Ross made prank calls to the venerated actor Andrew Sachs [famous for playing the Spanish waiter Manuel in the classic British sitcom Fawlty Towers -1975 to 1979] and the prank created dire controversy in the United Kingdom. Brand and Ross called Sachs to interview him on air; when he did not answer, they left lewd messages on his answering machine, including ‘juicy’ comments about Brand’s relationship with Sachs’ granddaughter Georgina Baillie. Sachs who was 78 at the time took it deadly-seriously and it made him so ill that there was a national outcry over it and it was criticised in the British parliamentary House of Commons by politicians including the then-Prime Minister Gordon Brown. Ross got off with a suspension from the BBC but Brand was forced to resign from the BBC by the corporation as it was on HIS show that the incident occurred.
Hey Bob….thanks for the information on Russell Brand. That information is not really known in the United States to many….including myself. His podcast does seem to be gaining some steam here in the States…..meanwhile his movie career seems to be losing some steam….granted I thought he was good in Death on the Nile and his Gru movie is about to blow the doors off the box office this weekend. HI BIG BOY: Thanks for the feedback on my Russell Brand comments. To be honest I have always considered some of Russell’s real- life antics more entertaining than I have had the impression his films might be for my tastes so I have seen absolutely NONE of them.
A rerun of Forgetting Myrna Marshall [which you faithfully list above] was at my local cinema about a year ago but I decided to give it a miss.
The two examples I gave you of his “bad boy” behaviour are just the tip of the iceberg and Wikipedia lists a whole stream of his controversies such as
1/10 Sept 2010: Arrested for assault and battery against a paparazzo who blocked the path of him and his fiancée at an airport.
2/12 March 2012 Arrest warrant issued against him for throwing a photographer’s phone through a window.
3/3 Sept 2013: Ejected from the GQ Awards for offensive behaviour: he got up and accused one of the Awards’ sponsors of having Nazi connections.
Industry insiders will tell you that bad behaviour can be big box office. Although the BBC sacked him for his lewd comments in the Andrew Sachs affair Russell simply moved on and could write his own ticket as the publicity about the incident drew a lot of attention to him so audiences queued-up in the hope of witnessing further bizarre and outrageous behaviour from him. At the moment Russell has a net worth of $20 million.
Another example of all that is John McEnroe whose vicious verbal outbursts against officials and players, and his smashing of rackets in fits of temper, at tennis tournaments made him a household name every bit as much as his admittedly brilliant tennis did.
In fact these days John still seems quite pleased with himself in the matter. He boasted recently of how when he joined the ‘elderly’ Senior Tennis Players tour in later life he was paid extra money for staging bogus public confrontations with others involved in the tour; and Celebrity Net Worth site claims that he has now a net worth of $100 million.
Anyway my main thought about Russell has always been that his surname is incomplete for a movie star: it should have been Russell Brando!!

I have seen 15 of the 20 Russell Brand movies…or 75%. I have seen two of them in theaters….the first Gru movie and Trolls. I would say my favorites would be Rock of Ages (WoC did not like this one at all), Trolls (it was cute with some good music) and Four Kids And It (my Caine bias coming through for sure).
