  1. Bernstein was another composer whom my late father admired so I heard a lot about Elmer early on, and of course his rousing score from The Magnificent 7 of 1960 became a “standard” that was played regularly on radio musical request programs over the years. Indeed historians have expressed surprise that it was nominated for, but did not win, an Oscar, losing out to Paul Newman’s Exodus theme.

Nevertheless posterity has well-remembered Elmer because on 3 polls that I have seen of all-time great film composers he is ranked 16th, 19th and even as high as 3rd. IMDB credits him with 30 movie awards overall and 39 nominations.

Certainly if your video about his work is your final entry in the current film musicians series it is worthy of that honor and I rate it highly at 98%.

Best STILLS entire 42 entries (1) Dino (2) Stripes (3) Walk on the Wild Side (4) Frank & Kim (5) hooker Jamie Lee (6) Hank Fonda with Mother Bates’ son (7) True Grit indeed! (8) the Ghostbusters! (9) Airplane (10) the “Seven” and (11) “Let my people go!” – In his Daily Telegraph column a week or so ago Boris actually urged Mother Theresa to instruct the European Union in that fashion.

  2. Roy Webb’s output as a film musician was enormous but he does seem to be one of those artists with a low profile in the general public domain . I could find mention of him in just 2 polls of all-time great film musicians and in them he was ranked a lowly 42nd and 49th. However I rate your profile of him an easy 97.5%

Here is my own pick of the best POSTERS from entries 40-21 in your Webb video. FL=foreign language (1) 2 for Duke’s Blood Alley (2) FL for Sinbad (3) 1st one for Sea Chase (4) Bedlam (5) 7th Victim (6) both for Mighty Joel Young (7) 2nd one for Bruce’s Pet (8) Stranger on 3rd Floor (9) FL for Journey into Fear and (10) Houdini. I saw the latter when it was released in 1953 on a double bill with Chuck’s Arrowhead.

Best POSTERS1-20 (1) Curse of Cat People (2) 1st one for Enchanted Cottage (3) 1st one for Crossfire with the 3 Roberts (4) both for Cat People (5) I Walked with a Zombie (6) I Remember Myrna (7) 1st one for Body Snatcher (8) raunchy one for Murder my Sweet (9) Out of the Past and (10) FL for Bringing Up Baby.

Best STILLS entire video (1) “Jamar” as stepmom Mary Pickford nicknamed him with Mo O’Hara (2) The Duke & Lana (3) Randy and friends (4) lobby card for Last Days of Pompeii (5) a very Sexy “Cat” (6) Veronica Lake (7) Archie & Randy (8) “Marty” (9) a non-Brexiteer Boris looking like a sinister Hirsch-type (10) Dunne and Boyer – a usually overlooked screen team who made 3 movies together according to The Work Horse (11) Dick Powell with [I think] Claire Trevor and (12) a fine closing 3-still Al Leach montage.

    1. Hi Bob, thanks for the review, generous rating and info, much appreciated.

Glad you liked the picture gallery.

I count 7 films out of 40 in full colour, seems low budget and monochrome was Roy Webb’s speciality. IMO he was an underrated composer, deserves more recognition.

There are 8 films scoring 10 out of 10 from Webb’s scoresheet –

      Bringing Up Baby
      Notorious
      Out of the Past
      Murder My Sweet
      Love Affair
      The Body Snatcher
      Marty
      Stage Door

Six more scored 9 out of 10 including I Walked with a Zombie and The Spiral Staircase.

One more film composer on friday. All 12 composers in this wave of video’s are sadly no longer with us, if I start a new series in a few months time they will be more up to date and some will still be alive (hopefully). 🙂

Meanwhile Brexit has been delayed again, till Halloween. [groan]

      1. HI STEVE

Thanks for the feedback and additional information.

That Roy Webb seems to be one of the less famous among film composers but you have been able to compile a comprehensive video of the movies that encompass his work only goes to demonstrate your own general familiarity with music’s essential contribution to movies. Well done.

    2. Will be checking out Steve’s latest You Tube videos today. Good thoughts on Webb and Bernstein by Bob. Makes for interesting reading. Even with an anti-Hirsch comment in there…lol.

  4. “Yet another composer I am not aware of….thinking I need to give up my movie buff card…lol. Overall I have seen just 14 of his movies. Finding a hard time finding a favorite. #1 Streetcar Named Desire is an all-time classic…but have never enjoyed that one. Spartacus is probably my favorite as I go through all of these movies. Did not like #5 The Misfits or #3 Va Woolfe at all. Dragonslayer and Bite The Bullet are fun movies but not favorites. #17 The Agony and the Ectasty was better than I thought….but not one I want to watch again….even with a good role by Chuck. An educational and entertaining video. Voted up and shared.” – From Steve’s Alex North You Tube Video…which is now added to this page.

    1. Thanks for the vote, share and comment Bruce, much appreciated. Your tally of 14 equals mine, Flora has seen 22.

Spartacus is my favorite from this bunch too. Dragonslayer has one of the best dragons on film – Vermithrax Pejorative – a great name for a dragon don’t you think? Sir Ralph Richardson had a memorable role as a tired old wizard.

  5. Added Steve’s Miklos Rozsa video to this page.

“Wow….just deleted my comment right when I was about to post the comment. So Cliff Notes version: Seen 17 of these 40 movies. Favorites inclued #26 Eye of the Needle, #21 Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid, #19 Time After Time…the Top 3….Ben Hur, The Asphalt Jungle and Double Indemnity. The coolest trivia I mentioned concerned Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid. The only classic movie that is featured in that Steve Martin comedy is The Bribe. The Bribe and Dead Men both have music by Mr. Rozsa…..I at least thought that was interesting. Voted up and shared. My first comment was much better.”

    1. Hi Bruce, sorry you lost your original comment, thanks for the Cliff Notes version, appreciate the vote and share. Flora’s tally 32, mine 29, yours 17.

Actually Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid contains clips from a bunch of classic movies including This Gun For Hire, Sorry Wrong Number, The Killers, Notorious and White Heat. Wikipedia has a complete list of film clips used. Rozsa composed music for some of them including The Bribe and Double Indemnity.
