Need to know which Strother Martin movie got the best reviews from critics and audiences and which got the worst reviews? Well, you have come to the right place….because we have all of that information.

Strother Martin (1919-1980) was an American actor who mainly appeared in supporting roles.  Strothers career spanned four decades.  His line, “What we’ve got here is failure to communicate.” in 1966’s Cool Hand Luke is considered one of the greatest lines in movie history.  His IMDb page shows 176 acting credits from 1950 to 1980. This page will rank Strother Martin movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information. To do well in the rankings, a movie needed to do well at the box office, be liked by both critics and audiences and earn some award recognition.  We listed over movies in our rankings, but there are some of his movies that were not included.  This was due to lack of box office information.

  1. I have seen 43 of the Strother Martin films listed. The only ones I haven’t seen are Red Sky at Morning and SSSSSS. The first Strother Martin film I saw in a cinema was Cool Hand Luke.

Strother is long gone from The Oracle of Bacon Top 1000. He was # 549 in 2000 but then c’est la vie.

He still has a good amount of connections. These are the actors on the 2020 list he has appeared with.

    1. Hey Dan. As always good stuff and thank you. Tally count: Me and Flora with a shared total of 45…which just edges your solo effort of 43. Your % seen is an incredible 96%. Not surprised about either fact concerning the Oracle list…..that he used to be on it, and that he is no longer on it. Legends John Wayne and Paul Newman earn the honors of most frequent Oracle co-star. Each with 6 movies. As for Oscar winners…35 is about average…but I would have guessed more. Good stuff as always.

FYI – I was really surprised that Strother Martin was a host of Saturday Night Live….I would have never guessed he was one of the many hosts of that show.

  2. I have seen 22 Strother Martin movies, including the top 10.

The HIGHEST rated movie I have seen is Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

The highest rated movie I have NOT seen is The Sons of Katie Elder.

The LOWEST rated movie I have seen is Pocket Money.

    1. Hey Flora….thanks for checking out our Strother Martin page. Tally count: Dan is carrying a big stick with an incredible 43 seen…meaning only 2 not seen. Me at 23 and you at 22. At least we have a combined total better than his. I have seen 8 of your favorites….and 8 of your “other movies. My favorites would include Cool Hand Luke, Butch and Sundance and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence. Good stuff as always.

  3. Thanks Mike. For some reason, his Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and SSSSSS did not get ranked…..but currently it is being updated….which for some reason now takes a long time to do…..so when all is said and done….Butch will have the top spot while SSSSSS will come into 44th place.
