Terence Stamp (1938-) is an Oscar®-nominated British actor.  After an extremely successful early career, Billy Budd, The Collector and Far from the Madding Crowd, Stamp withdrew from mainstream films and went on a 10-year sabbatical in India.  He returned to movies in the late 1970s.  He might be best known  as the evil General Zod in the first two Superman moviesHis IMDb page shows 89 since 1962.   This page ranks 44 Terence Stamp movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information. Television shows, bit parts and his movies not released in North America theaters are not included in the rankings.  This page comes because of peer pressure!

    1. Hey Dan
      1. Thanks for the lists….epic as always.
      2. The first thing that surprises (though I knew it) is that Sir Michael Caine is nowhere to be found on the page.
      3. Caine and Stamp were roommates…yet amazingly….despite working for the same 50 plus years…never worked together.
      4. So Terry is dropping….not surprising….being near the Top 100 was surprising….as he does not tend to make a lot of movies.
      5. Lots of co-stars listed twice…but I did not see any listed more than twice…that is unusual….let me check again….nope I was right…I think…lol.
      6. Seeing Allison Janey let’s me know you have updated your Oscar winners….first time I have noticed one her making these lists.
      Good information…thanks for sharing it.

  2. Nice work Bruce, just noticed this page after posting a reply to Bobs review on the other page. (I’ve copied that reply here)

I’ve seen 23 of the 44 films on the chart. Favorites include Superman 1 & 2, The Phantom Menace, Red Planet, Alien Nation, Elektra, Miss Peregrine, Modesty Blaise, Get Smart, Wall Street and Wanted.

Good to see Superman 1 & 2 top the UMR and critics chart. Superman II failed to make the top 5 on my top 35. The Phantom Menace tops the box office chart.

Stamp wasn’t happy working on Star Wars – “He may be a great visionary, George Lucas, and he may be great with toys and effects and stuff, but he doesn’t really strike me as someone who was really interested in acting.”

Another top page Bruce (and fast too). Vote Up!

    1. Hey Steve…..yep…I gave to peer pressure…..actually did 4 pages in 4 days….when I finished that Stamp page….thank you Hurricane Florence for the time to do that…lol. I think Stamp makes a good point about Lucas and acting. Anybody that watches Attack of the Clones should see that as evidence in Stamp’ favor.

Great Stamp quotes in one of your first comments here…I especially liked the one about Caine. Sadly Caine and Stamp have not spoken in years…..seems a reunion is well overdue. Good stuff as always.

  3. HI STEVE I though I’d hit the ground running and get in first for once with my preamble about Terence Stamp. In short this is a 1st of me being 1st!

Terence like Malcolm McDowell [with whom as you know I have often confused Terence] is a prestigious Brit actor who never made VERY top stardom despite looking as if he was booked for really outstanding things when he debuted in the title role of Billy Budd** a 1962 film starring Peter ,Robert Ryan and The Work Horse’s “billing guru” Melvyn Douglas. Ustinov wrote and directed it.

** Term of Trial was released before Billy Buddy but had been produced after it so Billy Budd was Terence’s 1st movie.

I’ve also mentioned before that when he worked on the 1978 Superman in the part of General Zod he became fast friends with a star*** who could probably speak English better than Terence and, according to Stamp, The Great One even offered him the latter’s “discarded” women!

My own favourite Stamp movies are 1966’s Modesty Blaise [in which he co-starred with my Dirk, and as Terence was a relative newcomer it surprised – and annoyed – me that he got billed above Dirk] and the 1967 Far from the Madding Crowd with Julie Christie and Peter Finch in which Terence played with great gusto Sgt Troy a “Flashman” type rogue who marries, cheats on and then deserts the heroine Bathsheba Everdene.

“Far from the Madding crowd’s ignoble strife
Their sober wishes never learned to stray
Along a cool, sequester’d vale of life
They kept the noiseless tenor of their way.”
    {Thomas Gray from his Elegy]

Again like Malcolm McDowell , Terence has worked steadily over the years and though his days as a star seem well behind him he has averaged one film a year since 2000 and is currently filming Murder Mystery with Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston. And what’s his name in that new movie? MALCOLM Quince. The Dan-like links between Stamp and McDowell seem to abound.

In short Terence has been a “survivor”. He doesn’t seem to have done over much TV work but from 2003-2011 in 23 episodes of the series Smallville he was the voice of Jor El, Superman’s father, and that project does give Terence a further Dan-like link with the actor***mentioned above whom Stamp says offered to share his women with him!

To be continued when Steve’s Stamp video appears.

    1. I mentioned in Part One that my fave Stamp movies are Modesty Blaise and Far from the Madding Crowd. Not far behind those two are Billy Budd and The Collector and indeed those two have special nostalgic memories for me.

I vividly recall trudging through the snows of Gloucester in late 1962 or early 1963 with some Royal Air Force pals to see that one in the Odeon there. The Collector was a great fave with my sweetheart of my Air Force days and we went to see it together.

I saw Crooked House of TV recently and I think that before it the last Stamp movie that I can recall seeing was one in which he had top billing and the lead – 1999’s The Limey, in which I hugely enjoyed Terence as a tough English career criminal practicing his arts in America [goodness, those English career criminals seem to be everywhere these days !] IMDB gives it a fine 71% rating and you do even better with 75% so I was not the only one that liked it [though The Oracle has not yet spoken!] .

And now to the main reason that you and I are corresponding at all about Terence. The following are my pick of the POSTERS in your video. Elektra [stunning opener] Red Planet, The Sicilian, the raunchy Bliss, Young Guns, the 2nd and 3rd ones for Poor Cow [one of those Brit “kitchen sink” dramas that I told you about a few months ago] Big Eyes, Term of Trial 2 great foreign language ones for Spirits of the Dead, raunchy foreign language one for Teorema, Pricilla and 2 for The Collector.

Best STILLS for my money are (1) Terence with my Dirk [wearing a blonde wig] and Monica Vitti (2) Valkyrie (3) the train set(4) lobby card for Superman 2 (5) as The Limey , looking very menacing with a gun – “A lot of people see me as a villain,” said the real life Stamp (6) with Julie Christie as Sgt Troy and Bathsheba (7) Pricilla (8) with Ryan in Billy Budd (9) solo as Zod in Superman 1978

IMDB lists 89 acting credits for Terence related to movies, TV and video games though as I’ve said in Part one his TV participation seems to have been relatively sporadic overall but does included a few TV movies

Because Terence on the screen was a big part of my Royal Air Force days in England your video holds an extra special significance for me so take it with you to the top of Bruce’s class and collect a 98% rating from me! I’ve watched it 3 times in the last hour or so

      1. Hi Bob, enjoyed your comments, thanks for the review, generous rating, info, trivia, anecdote, lyrics and quotes, much appreciated.

Happy you liked the posters, stills and lobby cards.

I have a fondness for Modesty Blaise too, a stylish and fun 60s spy spoof, a big plus is the memorable theme song by Johnny Dankworth.

I suppose todays audiences know him best as General Zod from the first two Superman movies. Other actors have played Zod but not nearly as effectively as Stamp. Funny how the greatest movie villains are all played by English actors eh? ?

I mean would Zod be as effective if his accent had a Texas twang? Or Scar from The Lion King voiced with an Irish brogue?

Only one Terence Stamp film scored 10 out of 10 from my sources and that was Superman The Movie. There are two 9s – Billy Budd and Far from the Madding Crowd. 11 more scored 8 out of 10 including The Limey and The Collector.

Top rated Stamp film at IMDB is Billy Budd, Superman ties with Billy Budd at Rotten Tomatoes. We’ll have to wait and see what movie tops Bruce’s chart.

Stamp on his former roommate Michael Caine – “Caine gave me all my early values, like making sure you were doing good stuff, wait for the right movies – then as soon as he got away he did exactly the opposite. Went from one movie to another.”

Stamp on Superman – “When I heard they were remaking it, or they were doing a version of it, I was kind of sad in a way. Superman (1978) was the benchmark for all of these comic book movies. There’s never been anything quite as good as those Richard Donner movies. Since then, big movies have become computer generated. They’ve become unemotional.”

“When the 1960s ended, I just ended with it. I remember my agent telling me: ‘They are all looking for a young Terence Stamp.’ And I thought: ‘I am young.’ I was 31, 32. I couldn’t believe it. It was tough to wake up in the morning, and the phone not ringing. I thought: this can’t be happening now, it’s only just started. The day-to-day thing was awful, and I couldn’t live with it. So I bought a round-the-world ticket and left.”

Carol Reed’s nephew is up next.

        1. HI STEVE You have given some excellent, indeed incisive, quotes in your comprehensive response to my posts about Terence Stamp.

I agree that English voices are often given to madmen and villains beyond the pale in movies. They can be given as well to “oddity” characters like C 3PO [actor Anthony Daniels] in the Star Wars franchise and even talking computers in sci-fi movies at times answer in a polite English voice when given commands or asked to provide information.

We here in Belfast and other parts of Northern Ireland have our own accents and don’t speak with English accents of any kind but nor do we talk in the “Oirish” way that you playfully keep referring to.

It is the people in the South of Ireland [Eire} who speak “Oirish” and we sound nothing like them. In the 2013 film Jack the Giant Slayer all the evil giants talk in a Belfast accent and I watched it in a cinema with my son in law who turned to me and jokingly quipped “We’ve been made the villains of the piece. Shows you what they think of us!”

Your favourite Orator spoke in a kind of English accent in the likes of Burn, Mutiny on the Bounty, Superman 1978 and of course Julius Caesar and in The Nightcomers and Missouri breaks [as part of a disguise] he spoke “Oirish” which one reviewer called “cartoon Irish” However to the best of my recollection he has never used a Belfast/Northern Ireland accent.

I look forward your video on Beerbohm Tree the younger.. Meanwhile take care.

        2. Steve:
RE: your comment on your site that I will do better on Friday’s subject is right. I am more familiar with Oliver Reed. I will still be beat by Bruce, but my Reed total is close to my Alan Arkin total.

          Bruce et al:

I have seen 3 Terence Stamp movies. Billy Budd is a favourite. I have also seen Young Guns and Wall Street.

          1. Hey Flora….thanks for checking it on our Terence Stamp UMR page. I have seen all three of the movies you have seen. Billy Budd was a movie that I was aware of all my life…but only recently watched it. Stamp made a great film debut. Good stuff.

      2. HI TEACH Good work in bringing on a Stamp page so quickly with 44 entries to contend with. I can now do my own stats analysis based on your table.

You will see that I have copied to this new Cogerson page my posts from earlier this morning on Steve’s page. If you have time you may wish to delete the ones on Steve’s page.

Terence has 11 Cogerson 100 million crashers and a quick glance at their titles suggests to me that he was not the main star in any of them

His other 33 films on your table collectively amount to around$$770 million in adjusted domestic receipts – just under an average per movie of a mere $24 million.

You will see from the final para of my 2nd post to Steve that some of Stamp’s earlier movies have a nostalgic significance for me so from my perspective it’s good to see a Cogerson page and Lensman video once again complementing each other Vote up!

You will also notice that for the first time ever I got in first with a contribution to an actor’s coverage on the Cogerson/Lensman sites – quite a feather in my cap!

        And the first one now
        Will later be last
Because the times they are a changing.

BOB DYLAN lines – OR –

“Made it ma – top of the world!”

      3. Hey Bob….of your favorite Stamp movies…only Modesty Blaise has escaped me. I had not even heard of that one before doing this page….or was it on Steve’s video first. Thanks for sharing your Royal Air Force memories and Stamp…..that is a good connection.

  4. Caved to peer pressure….we have a Terence Stamp page to go with Steve’s Terence Stamp video. Going to let this one sit in the site index for awhile before giving it a “push”. My comment on Steve’s You Tube Channel.

“Ahhh…Terence is here. Seen 35, 34,33 and 32. Actually saw number #32 in theaters…one of the few to see The Silician on the big screen. #30 Legal Eagles…went on a memorable date to that movie #29 The Art of the Steal…not a bad low budget con movie. #27 Unfinished Song….slow moving but a good movie #26 Crooked House…liked it except for Jeremy Iron’s son (Max) in the lead role #25 Get Smart…seen it…was he in it? #24 Alien Nation…I like this one…probably in my Top 3 Favorite Stamp movies. #23 Yes Man…a funny Carrey movie. #22 Star Wars 4….has not aged well. #21 Young Guns…decent western #20 Bowfinger…laughed hard the first time I saw this one. #19 Valykrie…one of the few Cruise misfires. #17 Wanted…good action flick #15 Miss P.’s ….not up to Tim Burton’s normal greatness #14 Big Eyes….did Burton really direct this one #13 Adjustment Bureau….good sci-fi movie. #8 Superman 2….great sequel….like it more than Superman 1. #7 The Limey…not as good as I was hoping for #6 Madding Crowd…looks awesome….but a one and done movie for me. #5 Wall Street….not aged well. #4 Priscilla, Queen of the Desert …ex-wife loved this movie….seen many times…I am not a huge fan #3 The Collector….strange but good movie. #2 Billy Bud….looks amazing even 50 plus years later…a nice start to his career. #1 Superman…good movie…with a small Stamp role. So that is 27 seen….not too bad. Good video. Voted up and shared.”

    1. Hi Bruce, love your mini-reviews. Yeah Superman is no.1 and Stamps role was small in the overall arc of that movie, but still it’s important and it all comes into play in the second film when the Kryptonian villains invade Earth. I’ve seen 21 of the 35 films on this chart. 23 from your chart of 44 films. Thanks for the comment, vote and share, always appreciated.

The Real McCoy and Link are the two I’ve seen from your chart, missing from my list.

      1. Hey Steve…I agree….his part is small in Part one…but very vital. I just do not like when a small part like that hits the top UMR spot. Superman 2 is the Superman movie I think about when I think of Stamp. I like part 2 so much more. With the additional movies…my tally reaches the 30 mark. 68% of his movies seen by me….I did not realize I was such a fan of his. Glad you liked the mini-reviews. Our pages make a good combo.
