  1. Audie Murphy’s movies defined post war American culture for many people. He was often the calm character in his movies who kept their heads when everything was threatened by venal and evil men. He was the hero archetype for many young men as both a cowboy star and in his memoir, To Hell and Back. His characters always benefited from the viewer’s seeing him as a hero, regardless the role.
At 5’5″ he was more real hero than the entire Marvel Hero’s Cast including 6’3″ Chris Hemsworth. No fault of Hemsworth, he just lacks the accomplishments of Murphy. Hollywood seems so bought into the idea is someone acts heroically, there must be some deep flaw in their character. Murphy’s characters stumbled, but in the end, good triumphed over evil.
