When I awoke this morning I was sadden to see the news that movie director Tony Scott (1944-2012) had passed away. On Sunday, August 19th, 2012 he jumped from a bridge and ended his life. To quote Ron Howard on Twitter August 20th, 2012….”No more Tony Scott movies. Tragic day”. For many months now I have been thinking about doing a movie page on his older brother, Ridley. However after checking out Tony’s career I was amazed to see that 15 of his 16 movies were already in my database and that I had seen every single one of his movies at least once. So I figured I would do a very quick tribute to one of the best action director over the last 30 years.
Tony Scott directed 16 movies from 1983 to 2010. His films were filled with lots of action and lots of movie stars. He worked 5 times with Denzel Washington, 2 times with Gene Hackman, 2 times with Tom Cruise, 2 times with Brad Pitt, and one time with the following actors….Bruce Willis, Will Smith, Robert Redford, Robert DeNiro, Dennis Hopper, Eddie Murphy, Kevin Costner and John Travolta….not a bad collection of actors in his 16 movies. 1 For a long time I didn’t realise that Tony was Ridley’s brother and of course when that fact registered with me I started making comparisons. I actually admired the two brothers equally for their moviemaking liking Ridley’s Gladiator, Alien, and American Gangster on an even keel with Tony’s Crimson Tide, Days of Thunder, Unstoppable and Top Gun
2 I therefore turned to grosses to break the tie and note from the comprehensive Cogerson stats tables for the two brothers that Ridley has a current worldwide adjusted total gross of about $5.4 billion whilst Tony’s reached approx $4 billion. However if we compare their totals up to just the time of Tony’s tragic death the figures are much closer and against Tony’s $4 billion Ridley had about $ 4.5 billion at that point. A combined $9.5 billion to date from the within the one family averaging out at over $240 million per movie is a fine achievement.
3 Another thing that the two brothers had in common was that each had an apparent liking for working with his own one particular actor and according to the Cogerson links columns Ridley made 5 films with Russell Crowe and his brother the same number with Denzel Washington.*** All in all the Brothers Scott have made a fine contribution to the cinema of the modern era and are well deserving of their Cogerson pages.

Great movie page Cogerson, I remember seeing Top Gun and was blown away as a little kid. It’s sad what happened to Tony Scott. He was working on a sequel to Top Gun. I didn’t know, however, that Top Gun was his biggest box office hit. So many really great and entertaining films he directed. The film world has lost a great artist.
Hey rabbit75….thanks for checking out my Tony Scott tribute…I have been amazed how many people did not know his name but have watched many of his movies. Top Gun was such a hit back in the 1980s…..he was actually working on a sequel at the time of his passing. I wonder if that will ever see the light of day.
