Hey Flora…as always thanks for sharing your thoughts on our latest classic page. I have seen 2 of the ones you have seen…his two 1959 hits A Summer Place and Imitation of Life. I would like to see Rome Adventure….if only to see him and Suzanne Pleshette really being in love on screen and off screen. Good stuff as always.
Thank you for featuring this very unique actor film star Troy Donahue. He was before my time, but I have researched him his life and films. He was extremely popular in the late 50’s and early 60s. He was easily Elvis Presley’s main romantic rival.
He made a series of excellent and memorable films that are still popular today, A Summer Place, Susan Slade, Parrish, and Rome Adventure, which has one of the greatest soundtracks in film history. One of them is the international hit “A Dali La.” Most of these films were directed by the excellent Delmer Daves.
Jack Warner worked him to excess, having Donahue make movies, and at the same time having him star in two television series, Surfside Six and Hawaiien Eye. When Donahue demanded more money and more independence, Jack Warner called every studio and had him effectively blacklisted. Donahue fell into alcohol and drugs, which both marred his good looks and his health.
He managed to overcome his demons and Francis Coppola, an old friend featured, him in The Godfather II. Donahue later did television, theatre, and bit parts in films, but was never able to recover his film stardom. He aspired to become a good dramatic actor, but he was typecast by his good looks and the success of the films he played in.
Recently, Troy Donahue has been rediscovered by a new generation. This is a testament to his talent and star magic which he possessed in spades.
May you rest in peace, Troy Donahue and thank you for giving us magical and memorable moments in your romantic films. This sad world certainly needs a spark of love and inspiration.
Hey Frank…..great comment on Troy Donahue. Your comment was both entertaining and educational. Lots of information shared that I had no clue about. His post 1980s career was not too impressive…but he worked steadily. That is good news that the younger generation is re-discovering him. I know when I was younger…I constantly got him mixed up with Tab Hunter. Heck, I admit it, I still do today…lol. Once again great comment….thanks for sharing these thoughts.
Back in the 90’s I went to a few film conventions in the city (very few) where I would old TV Guides and movie scripts from upcoming films. The scripts were thrown out a couple of years ago but the TV Guides are in places I can’t bother to reach in the house. Anyway Troy was at one of the conventions ( he looked good at the time, he was probably 60 at the time). With him was Gale Storm in her mid 70’s and she looked good 2.
Troy was a regular on the TV series Hawaiian Eye and Surfside Six, both Warner Brothers series and they tried all their TV stars out in films (lots of his co-stars at the time are from these shows).
Like John Cassavetes, Troy was on the original Oracle of Bacon list back in 2000, and like John he fell off immediately and never returned. Troy also has made lots of films that connect to no one. The 50’s and 60’s pictures are understandable but all that dreck in the 80’s and 90’s.

Hey Dan. That is awesome that you got to see Mr. Donahue in person. Ah…the benefits of living in New York. One day the corona virus will be ancient history and you can get those perks again. Good information on your TV Guides…I used to collect the ones that had people I liked on the cover….no idea where those are today. Looks like Harry Dean Stanton is the most frequent Oracle co-star. I miss seeing Harry pop up in new movies. His Oscar winning co-star total is not too high. But he has some legends on that list. Good stuff and as always…thank you.
