Wendy Hiller (1912-2003) was an Oscar® winning English actress.   Hiller enjoyed a varied acting career that spanned nearly sixty years. The writer Joel Hirschorn, in his 1984 compilation Rating the Movie Stars, described her as “a no-nonsense actress who literally took command of the screen whenever she appeared on film”.  Despite many notable film performances, she chose to remain primarily a stage actress.  Her IMDb page shows 59 acting from 1937 to 1992.  This page will rank Wendy Hiller movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information.  To do well in our overall rankings a movie has to do well at the box office, get good reviews by critics, be liked by audiences, and get some award recognition.

  2. I’m not too familiar with this lady.

I’ve seen 4 of the 17 films on the chart – The Elephant Man, Murder on the Orient Express, A Man for All Seasons and Pygmalion.

I’ve probably seen The Elephant Man the most from that group, though it rarely gets a watch now, far too depressing.

    Good stuff Bruce. Vote Up!

    1. Hey Steve…I am shocked you are not aware of her more. She is from your area of England….I would have thought she would be a hometown here. I have Mark Ruffalo and you have Wendy Hiller. Tally count: Tally count: Flora 8, Bob and PhilHoF17 with 7, me 5 and you 4. I would have guessed Murder on the Orient Express as you most watched Wendy Hiller movie. I agree with you about The Elephant Man. Good stuff as always.

  3. Wasn’t Luise Rainer’s Oscar winning performance in The Great Ziegfeld very short?

    1. I’ve seen 7 Wendy Hiller, or should I say Dame Wendy Hiller, films. I like all the top 5 on the list, though I saw Pygmalion a long time ago and never realized a very young DWH was Eliza Doolittle. According to Wikipedia, for that role, she was the first British actress to be nominated for an academy award for best actress in a British film. This was also her stage role.

      1. Hey PhilHoF17….thanks for checking out our Wendy Hiller page. I have seen 4 of her Top 5….the only one I am missing is Pygmalion. That is good trivia about being the first Eliza Doolittle and the first British actress to be nominated for an academy award for best actress in a British film. Tally count: Flora 8, Bob and you 7, me 5 and Steve 4. Good stuff.

    2. Hey Dan. Kudos to you for putting your trivia lists together. So to answer your question…Luise Rainer is in The Great Ziegfeld for about 40 minutes of the close to 3 hour run time. I would like to claim I had that stat just laying around my brain….but I had to look that up.

First list, which is pretty small….but understandable. Orson Welles is her most frequent Oracle co-star with a whopping 2 movies. Speaking of Welles…I finally saw his much delayed The Other Side Of The Wind today….it was a difficult movie to finish. Shocked it has such strong reviews. Voyage of the Damn contributed three as well. I think with this Wendy Hiller page…we now have UMR page on 10 of it’s stars. I am pretty much unaware of it…I am going to have to make a trailer page for it….just so I have a better idea of what the movie is about.

As always, great information….and thank you.

Second list….that is actually a pretty impressive total for so few movies made. Granted 5 were from Murder on the Orient Express.
