  1. I remember the first time I saw Paths of Glory, which was around the time that it first came out. It revealed an aspect of World War One history that I’d never known about. And it absolutely blew me away. The acting was brilliant, as was the direction.

    1. I agree with you 100%. I actually think this is Kubrick’s best movie….although I know I am in the minority in that thinking.

  2. 20.000 leagues under the sea on the James Mason
Blog is 429 million which is correct the figure
is lower but its the same film!

    1. Hey George. Figuring out box office totals from yesteryear is challenging…..the blog you site is higher…..box office mojo’s is lower….my total is in the middle. But all three show this was a huge hit.

  3. @Cogerson…He’ll always be “Spartacus” to me! And never less than a “Champion”, or a “Young Man With A Horn”, or head of a “Posse”, or promoting “Tough Guys”, or following “Paths of Glory” and the “Last Train From Gun Hill”, or drinking his way through the “Gunfight at OK Corral”, or bullying John Wayne in “The War Wagon”, or being a “Dear Secretary”, or “The Strange Love of Martha Ivers”, or…I think he was my all-time fav!

Love reading about him here again! Thanks!

    1. Hey Barbsbitnpieces….you list a ton of great movies…after writing this hub…I saw some of his earliest movies….like The Strange Love of Martha Ivers and Out of the Past…..it was really the first time I have ever seen him as a young man….he has held up so well for such a long time….and he is still going strong. I would say Paths of Glory and Champion are two of my favorites as well….with a shout out to There Was A Crooked Man…thanks for the great comment and I am glad you enjoyed reading this movie page

  4. When I did this page I had no real knowledge of #3 The Strange Love of Martha Ivers or #11 Out of the Past. After following the suggestion of FloraBreenRobison…I have now seen both movies.

First….The Strange Love of Martha Ivers….the dvd copy I watched was horrible…it was like watching an old VHS tape that was on its last legs….that being said…this was a very good movie…..Kirk Douglas is outstanding as the not wanted husband of Barbara Stanwyck….but the best performance goes to Van Heflin in a great role….so now I can highly recommend the movie as well.

The second recent Kirk Douglas movie I watched was Out of the Past….Kirk has a great and unforgettable role as Whit…the “bad guy”…whenever he is on screen…the movie becomes alive….the only part that I did not like was the ending….I knew it was coming but I still did not like it….it is worth a look if only to see Douglas shine….and see the movie that made Robert Mitchum a star.

    1. I’m so glad you were able to find the movies. Hopefully you will be able to see a cleaner version of the first movie. You will enjoy it even more. out of the Past is considered the quinnesential film noir. It contains all film noir elements and thus will let people unfamiliar with the genre study the genre. There are some variations to film noir where certain themes are changed or absent (eg. there might be a happy ending for some of the characters or instead of their being a femme fatale, ther is a man who brings down a woman etc), butOout of the Past has every one. I have my own copy of it. Thanks for letting us know what you thought of them.

      1. Of the two I enjoyed Out of the Past the best….I just knew things were not going to turn out well for Mitchum…just wish they could have had a better ending than a shoot out in a forest. Stanwyck’s part in Strange Love was pretty small….I think Douglas had a bigger part. My lasting impression will be Douglas in Out of the Past….you could tell the man was about to go to bigger and better things…and he did.

  5. Wow I thought he had died years ago, good for him that he is alive and kicking. I am not too familiar with his older movies, but I liked some of his movies from the late 70s early 80s. The Villian he played the Wily E Coyote part, while Arnold got the girl.

    1. Nope he is alive and well…and enjoying life….I was reading one of his books the other day…..it was very funny….he was talking about his addiction to reading the obituaries in the paper….funny stuff…..The Villian is probably one of the movies he wishes he would have passed on…although its 38th ranking is not too bad….thanks for the comments.
