Top Grossing Movies of 1958

This movie page looks at The Top Grossing Movies of 1958.   Currently when you type in the search words….”Top Grossing Movies of 1958″ you do not get much information.   So in an effort to get more information out there…we have decided to unlock our 1958 movie database vault and share the information we have collected over the years.

To make this list a movie had to be made in 1958 (as listed on IMDB.com).  Obviously many movies made in 1957 earned box office dollars in 1958.  On the other side many movies made in 1958 made money in 1959 and later.  This page will looks at 137 Top Grossing Movies of 1958.  The movies are listed in a massive table that shows who starred in the movie, had much the movie grossed when it was released and how that gross means in today’s money.

Obviously this is not all of the 1958 movies…..but since our website is dynamic, ever time we add a 1958 movie….it will automatically be added to this page.

  1. I must admit 1958 does not do it for me as much as 1957. I mean the page is great, but I can only list Vertigo, The Defiant Ones and The Big Country among my favorite films, and I never saw the top grossing film, South Pacific. I recognize there were of course many other good films: Touch of Evil, the flop that became the classic, Separate Tables, Auntie Mame, Run Silent Run Deep, The Horror of Dracula, among others. It was a important year for Paul Newman, who became a major star with The Long Hot Summer and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Sidney Poitier, who received his first Best Actor Oscar nomination in The Defiant Ones, and James Garner, who had his first starring role in Darby’s Rangers just as he was becoming a top TV star with Maverick. Meanwhile, Steve McQueen also had his first starring role in The Blob, a fun B-movie that ended up making quite a bit of money in outdoor theaters. Still for me, Poitier and Tony Curtis battling it out in The Defiant Ones get my top votes.
One film I noticed was missed from the database: In Love and War, which is found on the Robert Wagner page. Very average war and romance fare, but it did it well at the box office.

    1. Hey Phil….I think every year can produce an excellent Top 10. Which in this case…..you can get those 10 movies….I think a great year has 30 or 40 movies that are that highly rated…..1939 obviously is the first year to come to my mind.

Newman exploded onto the scene in 1958….and he never looked back. Glad you mentioned The Blob…..that was one of the first classic movies that I watched as a kid…..so it brings back lots of fond memories.

I think The Defiant Ones….is an excellent choice. In Love and War? I will have to go back and see what is going on with that movie….thanks for the headsup. And thanks for sharing your thoughts on this movie year.

  2. I have seen 52 movies, again a bit shy of Steve’s total.

The highest rated film I have seen is Gigi.

The highest rated film I have not seen is The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad.

The lowest rated film I have seen is The Queen of Outer Space.

My top ten 1958 movies are:

    Some Came Running
    The Big Country
    Touch of Evil
    Gigi
    Vertigo
    Run Silent, Run Deep
    Separate Tables
    Imitation General
    The Law and Jake Wade
    Torpedo Run

    1. Hi Flora, to be honest with you I used my own 1958 chart alongside Bruce’s chart to find the films I’ve seen and my movie chart has a few films that are not on his chart, e.g. The Hidden Fortress, The H Man, Revenge of Frankenstein and I Married a Monster from Outer Space. I did this with the 1957 chart too, so you’ve more likely seen more films than I from Bruce’s charts.

    2. Hey Flora…..52 for you…..57 for Steve…..132 for Dan….and 32 for me. I think our counts are more valid….as Steve and Dan are giving their complete 1958 totals. I am willing to bet that your total would be pretty close to Dan’s total if you looked at a complete list of movies made in 1958.

Steve is shocked that you have not seen The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad….lol. Once again I have seen 8 of your Top 10….with Torpedo Run and Some Came Running being my missing movies. I really liked The Law and Jake Wade…possible one of my favorite Widmark roles. Thanks for sharing this information.

  3. These are the 132 1958 films I have seen between December 1992 when I hit film 8000 and December 2016. Gigi was seen before 1992. Key – film, studio, stars if listed by me ate seen and source (DVD, tape, TV channel).

    1. Hey Dan….132 movies watched for 1958…..that is almost 5 times my amount. Once again…..awesome to see your movie watching on lists like this…..thanks for posting the information.

  4. 1958. An important year for Hitchcock fans and Hammer Horror fans too. Vertigo was voted in first place in Sight & Sound’s 2012 poll of the greatest films of all time, knocking Citizen Kane of it’s pedestal. And the first in the Hammer Dracula series starring Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing was released, it stands as the highest rated movie from the Hammer studios.

A great year for Ray Harryhausen fans too, The 7th Voyage of SInbad is one of the best loved movies from the celebrated special effects master.

I’ve seen 57 films from 1958. Favorites include – Vertigo, Dracula (aka Horror of Dracula), The 7th Voyage of Sinbad, The Big Country, Touch of Evil, The Fly, Gigi, I Married a Monster from Outer Space, It! The Terror from Beyond Space, King Creole, The Law and Jake Wade, Revenge of Frankenstein, Torpedo Run, The Vikings, The H Man and The Hidden Fortress.

There are 84 films from 1958 in my collection, I haven’t seen them all or I can’t remember which I’ve seen. I have the memory of a gnat.

High rated films I haven’t seen – Separate Tables, I Want to Live, The Last Hurrah and Auntie Mame.

South Pacific was unusually huge at the box office in the US, was it really that popular? Probably more than any musical before it! I saw it a couple of times, not a favorite of mine but it looked great. The use of color filters was disastrous though, I thought there was something wrong with my telly the first time I saw it. 🙂

Good to see Vertigo, The Big Country, Touch of Evil and Dracula topping the critics chart.

Impressive work Bruce. Keep em coming. Vote Up!

    1. Hey Steve
      1. Thank for checking out the last 1950s page.
      2. 57 movies?…I am at 32 movies…..so only 25 movies behind you….lol.
      3. I was sure to include the trailer for The 7th Voyage of Sinbad….as well as The Big Country…..figured you would enjoy both of those.
      4. 84 1958 movies in your collection…..pretty impressive…looking at the list….I have only one in my collection….The Vikings…and it is on loan from my parent’s…but I have had it so long…I might as well say it is mine….lol.
      5. As for South Pacific….Variety has it listed as the 9th biggest hit of the entire decade….and three of the movies ahead of it are Disney ones that got released countless times after 1958.
      6. Yep…the top of the critics chart was made to order for you….two Heston flicks, a Hitch flick and a Hammer classic.
      Good feedback….as always.

  5. 1 HI BRUCE Snap! As the saying goes as this is my response to the 1958 review. That Survey faithfully records (1) the big movies that were doing the rounds in 1958 like Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, No Time for Sergeants, Sought Pacific and The Big Country (2) those films that it was probably anticipated or at least hoped might draw A movie type revenues but ended up with B movie levels of grosses such as the musical The Girl Most Likely and two from Jeff Chandler, Raw Wind in Eden and The Lady Takes a Flyer, though I can recall queues here in Belfast for the latter simply because this city’s ever-popular Jeff was in it (3) minor programmers are also well covered such as The Safecracker, The Gun Runners, Cry Terror and Victor Matures two action movies Timbuktu and Escort West.

2 Accordingly the Annual Review is once again very comprehensive and as you say completes [well before Xmas!] all the 1950s surveys and gives an uninterrupted more than two decade run of Annual Reviews from 1936-1959. At one stage the only year without ACTUAL grosses was I think 1939 but I see you have now brought that page into line – so the circle is squared! Super stuff.

    1. Hey Bob.
      1. Hey Bob….glad you found your early Christmas present….a couple of months ago when I was going in the other direction….1938, 1937, 1936….you asked for us to go the 1950s….well….they are now done.
      2. Sadly this only represents about 30% of the movies released in 1958…..but it is the biggest list on the internet.
      3. Big budget, modest budget and low budget all get mentioned…as long as they were in the database.
      4. The only place you will find actual grosses…(at least educated actual grosses) is on these yearly reviews.
      Thanks for the kind words.
