1941 Top Grossing Movies

Orson Welles in Citizen Kane

This movie page looks at 1941 Top Grossing Movies Finding box office information for movies made in the 1930s and 1940s is extremely difficult.   For somebody looking for box office information on 1941 it is very very frustrating.  Over the years, we have researched and collected information on over 33,000 movies.  So we figured we would show all the 1941 movies in our database.

To make this list a movie had to be made in 1941.  Obviously many movies made in 1940 earned box office dollars in 1941.  On the other side many movies made in 1941 made money in 1942 and later.  This page will looks at 139 1941 Top Grossing Movies.  The movies are listed in a massive table that lets you rank the movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information.

The following massive table only includes the movies made in 1941 that are in our database.  Since we are constantly adding new movies to our database….this page will quickly become obsolete.  We will try and update this page on a regular basis.

  1. These are the 183 1941 movies I have seen since December 1992 when I saw my film #8000. All classics were probably seen before that.

Key – title, year, apparently top billed star on some, date seen, source (TV channel, tape, DVD). A channel that has a number is a local over the air channel in NYC.

    1. Hey Dan….your list is pretty impressive….as is your tracking data. Glad our website provides you a place to share this information. Your total of 183 is easily the winner in our tally contest.

I feel I keep decent records of my movie watching….but it is nothing compared to your detailed records. Very envious.

      🙂

  2. 1941, another great Hollywood year.

Lots of favorites here including – Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, The Wolf Man, Fantasia (which is really a 1940 movie), Dumbo, They Died With Their Boots On, The Devil and Daniel Webster, Suspicion, Citizen Kane and The Maltese Falcon.

Let’s see I’ve seen… 42 of the 137 films listed, there was no chance of beating Flora and her TCM channel here. RIP Robert Osborne.

I still haven’t seen the UMR chart topper – How Green Was My Valley.

Bruce, there is a glitch in the critics chart – The Strawberry Blonde has topped Citizen Kane.

Not counting Fantasia which was out in 1940 and wasn’t a big hit on first release though it raked in the dough in successful re-releases – the biggest movie of 1941 was Sergeant York which grossed nearly $600m in adjusted domestic totals, that’s amazing. I think that was Howard Hawks biggest hit, or was Rio Bravo bigger?

Another fascinating movie page, and a big vote up!

    1. Hey Steve
      1. Thanks for the visit and comment.
      2. You are correct about Fantasia…it was released in late 1940…not sure how I have 1941…..I will fix that when I get home….that error is probably in 5 or 6 UMR pages. So thanks for the heads up.
      3. Fixed the glitch….and Citizen Kane is back in the top spot even looking at the critic/audience column.
      4. Your 42 is 12 better than me….but trails Flora and Dan.
      5. How Green Was My Valley is no Best Years of Our Lives…but it is worth seeing.
      6. Sgt. York was a massive hit….one of the biggest hits of the decade and the 1940s were the pinnacle of movie ticket sells.
Thanks for sharing your movie thoughts on our latest page.

  3. 1941 is one of my favourite years. I have seen 60 of the 137 movies.

My absolute favourite is Here Comes Mr. Jordan at number 44.

My other favourites in no particular order *include*:

    Citizen Kane
    The Lady Eve
    The Maltese Falcon
    Shadow of The Thin Man
    How Green Was My Valley
    Love Crazy
    Suspicion
    Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde
    Mr. and Mrs Smith

Great to see another movie year page.

    1. Hey Flora….well your 60…doubles my total of 30….so congrats there….but looking at other comments…your 30 holds off me, Laurent and Steve….but it looks like you are in a tie with Lupino…and everybody is easily trailing Dan.

      Tally count:
Dan….over 183….though not all the movies in our table
      Flora & Lupino….at 60
      Steve 42
      Cogerson 30
      Laurent 22

I have seen all of your Top 10…..and liked almost all of them. Though I must say Mr. and Mrs. Smith is by far….not one of my favorite Hitch movies…..and I thought Love Crazy was pretty silly…though it is always good to see Loy and Powell together.

      1. Yes, my total only refers to movies included in the table. I’m not sure how many of the entire yof 1941 movies I have seen.

  4. I will comment on how many 1941 films I have seen and what are my favourites, but first being that this is classic cinema year and published today, I wish to use this page to remember TCM host and film historian Robert Osbourne who died this morning after being ill a long time. I will miss him.

    1. Hey Flora….great comment…and yes indeed….Rest in Peace Mr. Robert Osbourne….growing up I remember listening to him all the time on TCM….his love of movies came through so easily…he will be missed. Sad day when I heard of his passing.

  5. Glad to see another of your Year pages. Easily my favorite of the ones you do. As for this one; where is One Foot in Heaven. It was nominated for Best Picture. Seems like it is one that should be included.

    1. Bruce said before that table that this page only includes titles in his database already and that he constantly updates pages as he finds box office information – a key element to his formula of ranking movies – so the reason One Foot in Heaven isn’t included is that he has no information for that film. Movies become part of his database once he does a page on another artist.

      1. Hey Flora…..thanks for explaining how the page is set up….I wish it had all of the 1941 movies….but I guess 30% to 40% is about how many I have…..but in time that % should rise nicely. I did go back and in One Foot In Heaven….when I did my trip to see the Warner Brothers Ledgers….I found numbers for that movie….but when I did my Fredric March page…I either forgot about the movie all together or….I did not realize that I had the numbers in my notebook…..either way…bad researching on my part….once again…thanks for the help….it is greatly appreciated.

        1. One Foot in Heaven is a film I’ve seen, so that brings my total to 61. Glad to be of help.

    2. Hey DzyMsLizzy…..glad you like these pages. As for One Foot in Heaven….not sure why I did not have this one in the table….as I had not only the domestic but worldwide box office rental number in my movie notebook. Well I did go back and include One Foot in Heaven here and on my Fredric March page. Thanks for the heads up and thanks for the visit and comment.
