I didn’t see any films that should be in the $100m level: Hitler’s Children; Claudia; Stage Door Canteen; Mission To Moscow; Holy Matrimony; Happy Land; The Hard Way and of course Casablanca

Should Background to Danger be in the $100m level from a $1.3m in B.o. rental reported in Variety 1943 top grossers?

      Hey Kevin.
      1. Casablanca is listed as a 1942 movie….somehow (the way it was originally was released) got to compete with the 1943 movies for Best Picture….I thought I had included it in my 1942 page….but a quick review shows that I did not…..so I went and added it into this page.
      2. Not sure why Stage Door Canteen did not make the transfer when movie the movies from our database to our website…..seems our database needs to go to the shop for some maintenance as errors like this have become more frequent of late. But I add it to the table.
      3. The other movies you mentioned….have not been added to my database….this list of 110 movies…..is just the ones in my database…that have been researched 100%…..looking at the database…there are 53 more movies that only have box office gross…..which did not get included….I know I have been a slacker….lol.
      4. Background to Danger is listed as 1.3 million according to Variety…..but from the Warner Brothers ledgers….the numbers are $487,000 domestically and $1,250,000 internationally….meaning it did almost 3 times better overseas than in America.
Thanks as always for your attention to the numbers….it keeps me on my toes…:)

I think movies are eligible for the Academy Awards in the year they opened in Los Angeles. Casablanca opened in the fall of 1942, but didn’t play LA until 1943. I have a theory why, but with absolutely no proof. I think Warner Brothers held it back from LA for one year so it didn’t have to compete with Mrs. Miniver, and perhaps also their own hit, Yankee Doodle Dandy.
Just on Casablanca, I noticed in re-watching it recently that for all it strong suits, it is rather Hollywoodish, for want of a better term. Highly romantic and unrealistic. All kinds of folks are fleeing Europe. What is it that none of them have to take with them? Children. No one is burdened with a family. Just couples fleeing with mainly romantic problems. Mrs. Miniver probably connected more with average folks in that period when what most thought about first was what is going to happen to my family.
Don’t get me wrong. Casablanca is more fun to watch today. But I can see how a film about a mother and father worrying about their son dying in the war was more likely to touch a nerve at that moment than a romantic triangle movie, no matter how well done.

I noticed that you did not share a link for Shadow of A Doubt which you can add a Directed by Hitchcock link.

Favourite Films of mine from 1943 are:

    A Guy Named Joe
    Destination Tokyo
    The Ox-Bow Incident

Hey Flora….my tally is 12…since your comment….I have added in Casablanca and Stage Door Canteen….so I know your tally is either 49 or 50….as I know you have seen Casablanca….not sure about Stage Door Canteen.

I have also added the link to Sir Alfred in the Shadow of a Doubt co-star column…thanks for pointing that out. Our your favorites…I have seen 5 of them…with Shadow of a Doubt (I need to do a Joseph Cotten page) and The Ox-Bow Incident.

Thanks for the headsup, the visit and the comment….all are greatly appreciated.

Wow, over 70 movies making over 100 million! I never really liked For Whom The Bells Toll, apart from it being in color, i couldn’t see what the fuss was about. I suppose Hollywood was in the middle of Bergman fever and she could do no wrong.
I always liked The Song Of Bernadette, although not everybody’s cup of tea. Jennifer Jones was superb in the role. My favourite Hitchcock movie, Shadow of Doubt, although it didn’t do great box office which is a pity as it is one of his best.
A good year for Davis with Watch on the Rhine and Old Acquaintances. As I’ve said before i cant understand the Anomaly of Casablanca being a 1942 movie but winning for 1943.

Hey Chris the 1940s was the peak decade for movie admissions….I think the newsreels really helped ticket sales…. as I am sure that is where many got their WW2 news from. That helped many movies cross that $100 milllion mark.

I agree with you about For Whom The Bell Tolls….I thought it was a decent movie but have never wanted to watch it again. But like you I really enjoyed The Song of Bernadette.

Hitch was still a few years from becoming a huge box office draw…..he did get a great performance out of Joseph Cotten. Cotten had it tough ….having to work with those unknown young directors like Hitchcock and Welles….lol.

This was the final year of Davis’ dominance….she still had some decent movies but not like she did from 1937-1943. Thanks for the feedback….it is greatly appreciated.

I think a very astute point about newsreels. I am certain most knew what was happening off radio and newspapers, but actually seeing the dramatic films must have been a great draw. I never really considered that until you pointed it out.
What seems to be the case, off the chart on movie attendance I posted a while back, is that the WWII years were an aberration. 16 million out of a 131 million population in the service created a unique social situation. Movies might have been the favored entertainment for those who didn’t have anyone to date. And the draw of the newsreels had to be a big factor.

These are only the 1943’s I’ve seen since December 1992. I remember seeing The More the Merrier and The Gang’s All Here in 1979 at the Regency revival theater in NYC. Also saw Du Barry Was a Lady and Best Foot Forward there, not necessarily in 1979. Bought Behind the Rising Sun on videotape back in the mid 80’s etc.

Well I certainly have not seen that many movies from 1943, but from what I did see, Shadow of a Doubt, the Ox-Bow Incident and the British classic Life and Death of Colonel Blimp are definitely my favourites, so I’m glad to see they receive the highest critical rating on this page, albeit none was particularly successful at the box office. Even in the UK, Colonel Blimp (in which notably Deborah Kerr had one of her fist major roles) initially had a mixed reception, evoking criticism for portraying a German sympathetically and satirizing the British army to an extent, even though it was clearly pro-Britain. Anyway, it’s a wonderful comedy drama that still seems very fresh and relevant today.

Surprised to see that This is the Army was the highest grossing film of the year, but then again it was the war – and apparently proceeds went to the Army Emergency Relief fund, so at least it served a good cause at the time, even if its success was not long-lasting.

Other titles from 1943 I enjoyed were Jane Eyre, For Whom the Bells Toll, This Land is Mine and an Italian film not on the list, Ossessione, by Luchino Visconti (who later directed Burt Lancaster in The Leopard), a cinematic masterpiece based on the novel, The Postman Always Rings Twice, made 3 years before the Hollywood version. Interestingly, it was not shown in the US until later during to copyrights issue.
