Tyler Perry Movies

Want to know the best Tyler Perry movies?  How about the worst Tyler Perry movies?  Curious about Tyler Perry box office grosses or which Tyler Perry movie picked up the most Oscar® nominations? Need to know which Tyler Perry movie got the best reviews from critics and audiences? Well you have come to the right place….because we have all of that information.

Tyler Perry (1969-) is an American actor, writer, director and comedian.   Perry’s most famous film character is Madea.  He has played Madea (a tough elderly woman) in over 50% of his 40 IMDb acting credits.  His IMDb page also shows 141 directing, producing and writing credits.  This page will rank 24 Tyler Perry movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information. Television roles, cameos, shorts and straight to DVD movies were not included in the rankings.   This page comes from a request from Natonda H.

Over the years Tyler Perry has gathered a very strong fan base.   The  first time I really noticed this Tyler Perry box office power was in October 2016.    His Boo! A Madea Halloween was opening up against Tom Cruise’s Jack Reacher 2.  The forecasts were for an easy Cruise victory….but Perry’s movie ended up being the number one movie of the weekend.  The next weekend Tom Hanks’ Inferno was projected to easily be the number one movie….but once again Perry’s movie was the number one movie.  Taking down both Toms earned my respect!  Just two weekends ago we were headed to the theater to see Ready Player One.  As we approached the ticket window we started seeing “Sold Out” notices.  Our first thought was “oh no” we are too late to get tickets for Ready Player One….we quickly realized that the “Sold Out” notices were for Perry’s Acrimony….. and that there were plenty of seats left for the Spielberg movie.

Tyler Perry’s biggest Madea box office hit is 2009’s Madea Goes To Jail

Hey Pierre…that was Martin Lawrence. Lawrence played a similar character in 3 (I think) Big Momma houses. Lawrence’s best known movie might be playing Will Smith’s partner in the Bad Boy movies by Michael Bay. Apparently a 3rd Bad Boys movie with Smith and Lawrence is coming. Thanks for stopping by….especially since he is someone you are not aware of.

Just a short comment, as I think Gone Girl is the only movie of the list that I have seen 😉 At least no goose egg on Tyler Perry!

Hey Lupino….I was curious if the UMR international crowd would have anything to say about Tyler Perry. His international numbers are very weak (with the exception of Gone Girl)…which is not really the type of movies Perry usually appears in. Your one is tied for third place….1,2,3….one for you, two for Steve and three for me….I wonder if we can find somebody that has seen 4 Perry movies. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

Tyler Perry has done an exceptional job of building a film empire. How time will remember him is a very fascinating question. His fan base is one of the most loyal fan bases out there. Willing to support all of his projects. I have only seen a couple of the Madea movies. Cant say I was too impressed. I did enjoy some of his non-Madea movies Good Deeds, Alex Cross and Gone Girl stand out in my memory. I do think he will be playing Madea for the rest of his career. Like Adam Sandler and Jerry Lewis, he has carved out a nice niche in Hollywood history.

Hey Maurice J. You make some pretty interesting observations. I like the comparison between Perry, Sandler and Lewis…..though I think Perry’s subject is a little more serious than Adam and Jerry’s. I liked him in Gone Girl and Good Deeds. Alex Cross was ok at best. I agree 100% with you about his very loyal fan base…..his box office record is very very impressive. His most recent movie Acrimony almost outperformed Spielberg’s last massive budgeted movie when looking at average per theater during their opening weekends….as they went head to head on that weekend. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

Hey Maurice…just looked it up…on the opening weekend for Ready Player One and Acrimony….Ready Player One had an average gross of $9500 per theater…while Acrimony had an average gross of $8500 per theater,…so going toe to toe with Spielberg is pretty impressive…especially when Spielberg’s movie has expenses approaching a quarter of a billion (counting marketing)…while Acrimony’s budget is a fraction of the cost.

I don\’t think comment 9 is right. Despite Tyler\’s success he has not appeared in too many films with other people on the Oracle of Bacon Top 1000 Center of the Hollywood Universe list for 2016. He connects better through pictures he has no creative control over. These are the actors who are on the list who have appeared with Tyler. The pictures he has written and directed but not appeared in are not listed as connections.

      Hey Dan
      1. You are correct….number is from another page….though it is still pretty interesting….lol.
      2. Good point about the movies he controls and the ones he does not. It sounds like he is pretty much in complete command of his film studio in Atlanta.
      3. So the great Christopher Plummer is his highest rated co-star….I like that….The Star is still in theaters all these months after it’s release.
      4. Only 3 Oscar winner co-stars…only about 80 behind Sir Michael Caine……his Oscar winning co-star video would only be 20 seconds long…lol
Thanks as always for sharing this information.

Tyler Perry? Someone put in a UMR page request for the black dude who’s always dressing up in women’s clothing? Was Rod Taylor too boring? Okay. 😉

Looking at the chart I’m surprised to see that I have watched 3 of these films [cue gasps] they are – Alex Cross, Gone Girl and Ninja Turtles.

I also Star Trek (2009) but it’s not on the chart.

    An interesting page Bruce.

Hey Steve….tomorrow I am going to working closely with the teacher that requested this page…..so I bumped Mr. Perry up the list. I have seen 5 of his movies. I saw about a quarter of a Madea (which one I do not remember) movie. No plans on revisiting that one. I have seen 6 if I include Star Trek.

As for Rod Taylor….he will get a page soon. If I would have included Star Trek it would have been his top rated movie….I do not like to include cameo roles at all….but especially when they are the number one movie. Thanks as always for the feedback.
