  1. See that picture you have there of Viola and Meryl Streep from Doubt, that’s in the Parkchester section of the Bronx, a few blocks from I where I grew up. The front of the church and the school and the lines down the block in the film are Beach Avenue and St. Lawrence Ave and the church is St. Anthony’s (the interior of the church was shot in another parish in Westchester County). I went to that school for 4 years. John Patrick Shanley who wrote the show and the film’s screenplay also attended there. 20 years previous he wrote the movie Five Corners with Jodie Foster, Tim Robbins and John Turtorro set in that neighborhood but it didn’t look like the neighborhood he grew up in so he filmed it in Astoria, Queens. 20 years later it looked like he remembered it!!!

Did you know there were 3 St. Anthony’s schools in the Bronx, the one on the west side of the borough counted Helen Kane (the original Betty Boop) and Eleanor Geisman aka June Allyson as alumni, but I digress.

Viola fell of the Oracle of Bacon list when it went to Wikipedia. These are the actors on the list she has appeared with.

  2. Viola has accumulated a net worth of $12 million according to the Celebrity net Worth site and IMDB credits her with a jaw dropping 92 acting awards and 137 noms – wow!

And what a lady in her private life too. Not only -most importantly – does she collaborate on an ongoing basis with programs to eradicate child hunger globally; but she has contributed to the civic life of her hometown Central Falls Rhode Island by making donations to prevent the closure of the public library; and in 2018 she gave funds to her alma mater Central Falls High School for its theatre program. As a conscientious activist she was also a speaker at the 2018 Women’s March events in Los Angeles.

In terms of both personal and professional considerations Viola is therefore a very worthy recipient of a Cogerson new page in my opinion so my personal compliments on selecting her Bruce. “Vote Up!”

“—-everyone should be a child, and should grow up and have a chance at the American dream.” – Viola Davis.

    1. Hey Bob….thanks for stopping by and checking out our Viola Davis page. Thanks for the stats on her acting awards and her off screen charity work. It is very very impressive information on Ms. Davis. Good quote from her. And thanks for the kind words. Another Best Supporting Actress Oscar winner completed….love my lists…lol.

      1. As you know I have long appreciated the diversity of the profiling of your site which gives honour where honour is due to for example big stars/lesser stars/box office giants/prestige performers/supporting performers/those that have never won awards etc spread across all demographics and genres – and even including The Donald – against strong protest from some of your viewers!

[Not everyone is capable of being as even handed as this site is. For example sadly in 1964 my own idol The Duke stormed out of an interview by domestic Brit legend the journalist and television presenter Barry Norman (“The Hollywood Greats”) because Norman said in passing that he preferred Democrat LBJ and not Republicam candidate Barry Goldwater to win the US presiential election that year The Duke took the view that Norman had “insulted a Great American.”]

Indeed I give you a 99% rating for diversity effort and that would rise to 99.5% if Hirsch’s page was removed and up to 100% if it was replaced with Jocelyn Brando!!!

Anyway I am pleased to see that yet again you have now given us a new page on a talented African American supporting female star who seems to have a great sense of civic and humanitarian duty.

You really could do not do much more to bring total variety to your site in relation to the performers you select as in the case of for example European continental performers you are hindered by the general unavailability of box office stats for such thespians.

In fact I can in all seriousness tell you that about 30 years ago when it looked as if a British tennis star would never again win Wimbledon the bookmakers over here [probably with tongue in cheek and I never found out how many takers splashed out ] were offering odds that a Martian would land on earth before a Brit won Wimbledon again!

So given that you make commendabl efforts to be “all things to all men” I wouldn’t be surprised to read in the sports and/or entertainment pages someday something like “Cogerson goes missing AGAIN. Is he on Mars? Martian megastar to get Cogerson page – bookies slash odds from 1000/1 against to just 50/1 against.

  3. On top of her successful film career Viola has appeared in (1) 10 stage productions between 1988 and 2010 including Fences the movie version of which she appeared in alongside Denzel Washington and won a best supporting actress Oscar and Golden Globe and BAFTA (2) 34 television productions between 1996 and 2019. She has been executive producer of 2 cinematic movies; and producer of 8 projects which are a mixture of short subjects alongside TV presentations and a theatrical play.

She has 2 movies at post production stage including a further Suicide Squad; is filming a third; and has been announced for a 4th. She has also been announced for a TV series called First Ladies in which she is to be cast as Michelle Obama. I look forward to that one in particular.

On the big screen my fave Viola flicks are Out of Sight/Doubt/Nights in Rodanthe/State of Play and Eat Pray Love. On television I was much entertained by her interpretation of police officer Molly Crane a subordinate of Police Chief Jesse Stone played by Tom Selleck in “Jesse Stone”; and Viola was in 4 of the 9 episodes of that excellent crime series [2006-2015]

    1. Hey Bob…thanks for the information on her stage career and her up and coming movies. That is pretty big thinking for The Suicide Squad….not many people really enjoyed the first one….and now three more movies. We will have to see if that was a wise decision. I have seen all five of your favorite Davis movies. I liked Out of Sight. Nights in Rodanthe was filmed not too far from my location. Good info on her time on Jesse Stone. Good stuff as always.

  4. Back in business. Our database was out of order the last four days….but it is back up and running. Luckily the database being down did not take the website with it. Happy Monday!
