3. Al Pacino was rejected repeatedly by studio heads and frequently referred to as “that midget Pacino” by producers of The Godfather (1972) who did not want him for the role of Michael Corleone , but Francis Ford Coppola fought for him. This film was shot briskly because both the director and the leading actor were in constant fear of being fired. Ironically, this turned out to be a breakthrough for both.

4. Al Pacino had been friends with John Cazale since they were teenagers. 1. I remember watching these although I was only a teenager at that time. I did not understand much.

    1. Hey Deepa Venkitesh…..thanks for the visit and the comment…I am sure now his movies will be much easier to understand.

  2. informative blog ……… great sharing

in the last few years i think al;pacino movie selection was not that great.

    1. Hey echelon. Thanks for the compliment and the comment. I think you are 100% correct about his recent movies. I just saw parts of Jack and Jill(which reminds me I need to update this hub)….and in a really bad movie his scenes were brutal to watch…and I kept thinking…what is he thinking?

  3. Don’t hold a grudge against him because Sonny got shot on the causeway. I mean, could you see Al Pacino playing Jonathan E in “Rollerball?” Sorry that “And Justice for All” and “Serpico” didn’t make the list, however.

Thanks for the great movie page

    1. KF Raizor….good points on Pacino and Caan. I think could have had a bigger career if he would have picked roles better. But I have to have somebody to blame for Caan not being a bigger star….so Pacino will have to take the blame….lol.

And Justice For All came in at #8 on the movies according to Movie Score while Serpico came in at #6 on the Movie Score table….so they are both Top Ten movies for him. Thanks for the comments and the visit they are both greatly appreciated.

  4. Very nice page! I remember hearing James Caan on a talk show that he originally was supposed to play Michael, but then Francis Ford Copolla wanted Al for the part. But I do think that Al Pacino is one of the best actors out there. He can play any part so well. I especially liked “And Justice For All” I remember reading that acting was his pyscho therapy. I was wondering where you obtained those stats?

    1. Hey Charity Squid…James Caan had previously worked with Coppola on a movie called Rain People and they really hit it off…so Coppola knew he wanted Caan for the Godfather. But I think the change that put Caan as Sonny and Pacino as Michael was a very good move. Pacino is a great actor….but I do not think he has been able to recapture the magic of his movie run from 1972 to 1979…but then again that was one of the best runs ever….so it is a very high bar.

The stats come from many different places like Box office mojo, yahoo movies, internet movie database, rotten tomatoes, and old variety magazines for movies before 1983…then I take all the information and great one movie score using all the information I gather…it is not a perfect system but I think it usually does a pretty good job of getting the better movies to the top…thanks for the comments and the compliment…and thanks for giving me my next hub….as I realize that I have yet to a James Caan hub…so if you like Caan check back in a few days for his page.

  5. Scarface, donnie brasco, righteous kill, carlito’s way, godfather. In no particular order

    1. True PDX….but of their three movies together…I would put Heat and The Godfather well above Righteous Kill….I still thought Righteous Kill was a good movie…not nearly as bad as so many people made it out to be.

        1. Yep I was wrong…as DeNiro was in The Godfather part 2 not part 1…although the last time I watched the Godfather…I watch an edition that took all three movies and put them in the right chronological order…and thus made it almost 10 hour Godfather marathon….so in my mind it is like one big movie now…not 3 movies.
