  1. I remember Alain Delon being a big favorite of my mothers.

I’ve seen just 5 of the 79 films on the chart, they are – Scorpio, Red Sun, Airport 79, Plein Soleil and The Yellow Rolls Royce. I must have watched Texas Across the River but can’t remember for sure.

Red Sun is a favorite, I’ve watched that a bunch of times. Airport 79 was ridiculous but I enjoyed it, call it a guilty favorite. Plein Soleil was based loosely on the novel The Talented Mr. Ripley.

    Nice work Bruce. Vote Up.

    1. Hey Steve. Thanks for checking out our Alain Delon page. The man has been a very busy after over the last 60 years. Your five movies seen tops my three. We have only seen one common Delon movie. That would be Concorde 79…which I barely remember. Good stuff as always.

  2. Louis Jourdan’s career was steeped in the French cinema but when we were growing up in the 1950s over here in Belfast we were oblivious to his French movies and he was always thought of as a “Hollywood” actor because of the string of major Tinseltown productions that he appeared in: Letter to an Unknown Woman; 3 Coins in the fountain; Julie; Gigi; The Swan; Madam Bovary and Can-Can.

So the Big 3 French actors in our perception in Northern Ireland were Alain/Belmondo/Gabin. The latter did not have a high-profile Hollywood career but he had enormous prestige with for example in the 1980s a pool of the world’s greatest directors ranking him joint 7th greatest actor of all time [tying with Tracy and Olivier in that spot – Chaplin/Brando/DeNiro in that order were the top 3 in the poll] Gabin and Delon and Belmondo all made a number of movies together over the years and the order of billing was always Gabin/Belmondo/Delon.

IMDB credits Alain with 13 acting awards and 6 nominations; and his net fortune from films/business projects etc has been assessed just recently this year as $255 million. That’s a staggering sum for a thespian whose acting roots were outside the Hollywood film industry. The last time I holidayed in France there were posters advertising a stage performance by Alain in Paris.

I knew that Jean-Louis Trintignant had been offered Last Tango before Brando ; but I was unaware that Alain too had been given one of the first refusals as Bruce’s Possibly Interesting Fact No 5 above now reveals. Ironically therefore after John Garfield [mentioned above by Bruce as Fact No 3]Brando along with Robert Walker and Montgomery Clift have been Alain’s fave actors; and ultimately Marlon’s Last Tango performance was judged by famous London Evening Standard film critic Alexander Walker as the greatest EVER by a male actor.

  3. Nice to see another French actor getting a UMR page. Alain Delon was probably the biggest male star in France of his generation, and women were crazy about his extreme good looks. I’ve seen 15 of the films listed. Favorites are Rocco and His Brothers, Purple Noon, The Leopard, The Sicilian Clan and The Samurai. Interesting to see how the worldwide take of The Leopard at $210M dwarfs the US box office of US $47M (which is shown on the Burt Lancaster page). This was one of Lancaster’s greatest role and success internationally, though sadly not widely recognized in the US.

    1. Hey PhilHoF17….thanks for stopping by and checking our Alain Delon page. More French thespians are coming. I am down to 20 Joel Hirshhorn subjects to do…..4 are French legends. Jean-Paul Belmondo, Eddie Constantine, Catherine Deneuve and Gerard Depardieu. 15 is an impressive amount of Alain Delon movies to see. I have seen two of your favorites…..The Leopard Samurai….lol. I agree, The Leopard has a great following, but it was pretty much ignored in the United States. Good stuff as always.

  4. Hello

    1. Hello

In French in the text, thank you for your interest in the box office story blog in which Laurent has participated a lot and still participates.
Difficult for me to make a choice in the career of Alain Delon much better actor than his reputation as a handsome man has somewhat obscured.
      Here is my top 3
      – The swimming pool – because it’s my favorite French film and Delon, Maurice Ronet and Romy Schneider it’s just great.
      – Plein soleil – absolute masterpiece a very great thriller and the duo Delon / Ronet is magical. The remake with Matt Damon is just passable.
      – Melody in the basement, a film that would be any thriller without the masterful and magnetic presence of the admirable feline Delon and at the height of his sex appeal. He was the most beautiful actor in the world at the time.

Until reading your comment, I had not realized that Plein soleil was an adaptation of The Talented Mr. Ripley…..that is good information.

Thanks for all the great information on your website…and thanks for visiting out website.

Jusqu’à la lecture de votre commentaire, je n’avais pas réalisé que Plein soleil était une adaptation de The Talented Mr. Ripley… ..c’est une bonne information.

  5. Hello Bruce

After Brigite Bardot, here is Alain Delon. France is in the spotlight lately on UMR Lol.

I’ve seen only 25 movies of the list, but I am not a big fan of Alain Delon, I confess.
All my favorites are in the top 20. They are Borsalino, Sicilian Clan, Any Number Can Win, Farewell Friend (very good thriller) and, may be the best for me, Le Cercle Rouge.
I don’t like Le Samouraï, nor The Leopard for example.

As you know the biggest hits in France were Sicilian Clan, Le Cercle Rouge, Lost Command and Borsalino. The lattest was probably his biggest hit in europe.

Alain Delon was certainly the most popular french actor in Japan where he was a very big star. Most than Jean Gabin or Jean Marais who were very popular during the 1950’s.

On the other hand, the data in the Boxofficestory.com table are admissions and not receipts, except for the american BO.

    1. Hey Laurent. Your 25 Alain Delon is easily the most seen….and you are not a big fan of his. Good information on Mr. Delon. I thought of you when I noticed Jean Gabin popped up as a co-star in a couple of movies. Intersting that you did not like the movies he is known for here in the United States. Le Samourai and The Leopard are two of the three I have seen. Both looked awesome but I can not say the story has stuck with me….and it has actually not been that long since I saw those movies.

As for the grosses…..my database is having some issues with the admissions….I have had to go back and re-enter many of those grosses using the ticket solds. Hope all is going well for you. Good stuff as always.
