  1. Anne Bancroft was a very good actress, who worked her way from programmers up to almost legendary status. I have seen 23 of the movies listed here, My favorite Bancroft performances were in The Miracle Worker, Garbo Talks, The Elephant Man and Torch Song Trilogy. Other films I enjoyed were The Graduate, Don’t Bother to Knock, How To Make An American Quilt, Great Expectations, 84 Charing Cross Road and, to a much lesser extend, The Girl In Black Stockings. Never been a huge fan of Mel Brooks, so I prefer Carole Lombard’s version of To Be or Not To Be. Interesting variations on Mrs Robinson, I would have liked to see Jennifer Jones in that part, if just to rejuvinate her then fast fading career, but of all the actresses mentioned my true favorite would be Deborah Kerr. I can’t see Joan past “I saw What You Did” or Rita Hayworth in that part…As always, interesting to see the stats of a lady who started in the 50’s and kept working right into the new millenium.

    1. Hey Lupino
      1. Tally counts: You 23, Steve 18, me 14 and Flora 9.5.
      2. Of your favorites, I have not seen all of Garbo talks….seen bits and pieces of that movie…but never from beginning to end.
      3. I can understand your point about Mel Brooks. His To Be or Not To Be is almost a scene for scene remake….I guess it was hard to spoof a movie 40 years old.
      4. I like mixing and matching all of these possible Graduate co-stars.
      5. That would have given Jennifer Jones a huge lift. Shockingly, Bancroft did not capitalize on the success of The Graduate…I guess she went back to the stage after the success of that movie.
      Good comment.

  2. I have seen 8 of the films listed, although I have seen 9 of the movies in Steve’s video.

My favourite movies are The Graduate, Don’t Bother to Knock, The Slender Thread and Silent Movie.

I have also seen Demetrius and the Gladiators, The Pumpkin Eater, The Hindenberg, and The Prisoner of Second Avenue.

    1. Hey Flora. Tally count Steve 18, me 14 and you 9.5. Of the ones you have seen, I have not seen The Pumpkin Eater or Slender Thread. Pretty surprised The Miracle Worker is absent….that is her best film role. As always….your comment and feedback are greatly appreciated.

  3. Well well we both produced an Anne Bancroft page/video in the same week, not bad. 🙂

Oh the irony, I’ve seen more movies from your Bancroft chart than mine – 18 seen from the 48 films you’ve listed (My tally was 10 from my top 30).

We both have the same top 3 but in a completely different order.

Favorites include – The Graduate, Silent Movie, To Be or Not to Be, The Elephant Man, The Hindenburg, Demetrius and the Gladiators, Antz and Honeymoon in Vegas.

It’s been decades since I last watched The Miracle Worker. I have not seen The Turning Point. I’ve been to Charing Cross Road hundreds of times but I’ve never seen 84 Charing Cross Road.

Interesting seeing all the names considered for the main roles – Jack Nicholson as Benjamin and Joan Crawford as Mrs. Robinson? [cue Bob grinning]

Another top job Bruce and thanks for the video share. Vote Up!

    1. HI STEVE

1 It’s certainly great having Bruce’s grosses hard on the heels of your video as one is easier able to visualise many of the movies for which WH quotes stats.

2 Interesting point about my Joan. Indeed from what I know of the personal lives of Anne and Joan the latter would have made a more appropriate Mrs Robinson than Anne – read Kirk Douglas’ autobiographical book The Ragman’s Son!

3 It is said that my Doris was also in the frame for Mrs Robinson at one stage. If that had come to pass I think I would have stopped watching movies forever.

      1. Hey Bob, good breakdown on Steve’s video. I know it would destroy Day’s screen persona, but I think she would have made The Graduate an even bigger hit….which is saying a lot considering how big a hit The Graduate was.

    2. Hey Steve
      1. Thanks for the comment, visit and tally count.
      2. Tally count: 18 for you 14 for me.
      3. I had done lots of research on her when I was doing my decade pages….your Bancroft video got me motivated to finish her page.
      4. Good to know our Top 3 match….even if you got yours in the wrong order……lol.
      5. I have seen all of your favorites.
      6. 84 Charing Road is actually a pretty good movie. I have only seen it once and will probably never watch it again but it was worth the one viewing.
      7. I think a page with the many possible Benjamins and Mrs. Robinsons would be fun one to check out.
      Good stuff.

  4. HI BRUCE

1 Great to see Anne’s stats and I’ll be submitting a detailed post tomorrow, but meanwhile you’re again bringing out my OCD about making sure movie titles are correct. You have reprised your Raw Mind in Eden trick by calling Audie’s Walk the Proud Land by the name Walk the Proud Life!

2 At first I thought that you had mixed the former title up with another of Anne’s 1950s B movies A Life in the Balance co-starring Ricardo Montalban & Lee Marvin which I don’t see on your Bancroft table. However you have the wrong title on Audie’s page too and I’m kicking myself for not spotting that before as Murphy,s page is one I go back and forward to regularly.

3 So I’m typing this page to you from a corner in which I’m sitting wearing a dunce’s hat !

    1. Hey Bob….I will fix that error when I get home tonight….you can take your dunce cap off…..if you don’t make mistakes then you are not trying….lol.

    1. Hey SteinHOF…..thanks for the kind words….sadly I got distracted on another page…so I did not return to finish this page.
