Cogerson Review Of Ant-Man and the Wasp – Seen 7/6/18

Why I watched this one? (1) I liked Ant-Man….and I am a Marvel Universe Completist….so this was a required viewing.

What is this one about? As Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) balances being both a Super Hero and a father, Hope van Dyne and Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) present an urgent new mission that finds the Ant-Man fighting alongside The Wasp to uncover secrets from their past.

My thoughts on this one? I enjoyed this movie…..it was a fun movie…..but like all movies it has some great parts and some weak parts.

The Good – Paul Rudd is still a blast to watch as Ant-Man……he along with Ryan Reynolds are the best comedy thespians in the Superhero movie world. The Bad – Rudd’s Ant-Man is at times, pushed to the back burner….in other words….the movie is so busy….it sometimes forgets the star.

The Good – Lots of good work in supporting roles by Douglas, Michael Pena (I liked him more in this one than the first one), Laurence Fishburne, Randall Park, Evangeline Lilly and Abby Ryder Fortson (an excellent child performance). The Bad – Love the actor Walton Goggins, but he was completely wasted in this movie. His entire story line could have been edited out of the movie.

The Good – Liked the humor throughout most of the movie. The Bad – Yawn – the villain – never really got emotional attached to Ghost….thought the movie really slowed down when Ghost was on screen.

The Good – The mid-credit scene is “must see”. The Bad – The final end credit scene is not worth waiting around to see.

Final thoughts – For the first 75% of the movie, I was really enjoying the movie…..even more than the first Ant-Man movie. The final quarter was a let down. The final huge action scene…..(a) was not too exciting….(b) had too many story lines crashing into each other (some should have been resolved by the end)…. (c) had underwhelming Quantum Realm special effects…..(d) some of the worst humor in the movie and (e) seemed to go on forever. So that is an A for three quarters of the movie and a C for the final quarter….which in my world gives this movie a 4 of 5 star review.
