  1. Hello Bruce,
It is so raining in France, now so I can take time to read your new pages.
Ben Gazzara for me is a TV actor with a great série « run for you your life « but for the movie history I have three names, Peter Falk , Gêna Rowlands and of course John Cassavetes. I have not seen all their films but I know they were very closed and in the same spirits.
So sorry I don’t remember him in anatomy in murder which a very great film but I saw it a long time ago.
A good remembering page, as always
    See you
    Bye
    Pierre

  2. “After a strong start, Ben Gazzara’s movie career ran out of steam. The trouble isn’t his acting, which is always good, but he’s material. He seems to lack judgment in choosing Scripps. Gazzara has a relaxed manner and a weathered face that seems to hint and experience. He’ll be a marvelous leading man if he ever finds a hit.“ -1983

    1957’s The Strange One
    1959’s Anatomy of a Murder
    1979’s Saint Jack

  3. Hmm less films on the chart than on my Ben Gazzara video, that doesn’t happen often.

I’ve seen 7 of the 23 films on the chart. Favorites include – Road House, Capone, The Bridge at Remagen, The Big Lebowski and The Thomas Crown Affair.

Anatomy of a Murder no.1 on the chart, I’m not a fan of that movie or The FBI Story – the other big 160min James Stewart film of 1959.

Road House is my favorite Gazzara movie, and I also enjoyed the remake to The Thomas Crown Affair.

I’m curious to see ‘Inchon’ but it rarely if ever gets played on TV. A big flop at the time but it should have some interesting battle scenes and than there’s the odd casting of Sir Laurence Olivier as General Douglas MacArthur (a role played by his Boys from Brazil nemesis Gregory Peck a few years earlier.)

    Good stuff Bruce. Vote Up!

    1. Hey Steve
      1. Thanks for stopping by and commenting on our Benny G. page.
      2. Just added your Benny G. video to the page…I had forgotten that you had a video on him.
      3. Yep…one of those rare times your totals top my totals…so many of his movies did not have any box office information on them…..I have actually been researching him for awhile.
      4. I just recently re-watched Road House….it looked like he was having a blast playing the bad guy in that one.
      5. I have not seen Inchon either…but it seems I have been reading about that movie all my life…from the Golden Turkey Awards to how Olivier sold out at the end of his career….one day like you…I will see it.
      6. Anatomy of a Murder is a good movie…but not one that begs to be re-watched….statistically…it is one of the best movies ever….as it had box office glory, great reviews and Oscar love.
      Good feedback as always.

    1. Hey Dan. Wow….stunned that Gazzara is that high on the list. Granted many of his movies that he made did not make my table because they did not open in theaters….but that would help his Oracle status. Looking at the first list…pretty massive….still surprised. Jon Turturro is his most frequent co-star. 33 Oscar winning co-stars is impressive too. Thanks as always for putting this information together.

  5. I have seen 5 Ben Gazarra movies.

The HIGHEST rated movie I have seen is Anatomy of a Murder.

The LOWEST rated movie I have seen is The Young Doctors.

    Favourite Ben Gazarra Movies;

The Thomas Crown Affair remake (still prefer the original)
If It’s Tuesday, It Must Be Belgium

Other Ben Gazarra Movie I Have Seen:

Anatomy of a Murder – good film, but it puts all the blame on Lee Remick/women’s fault
    Husbands
    The Young Doctors

    1. Hey Flora. Thanks for the feedback on Ben Gazarra. I have seen 10 of his movies. Of your two favorites I have seen The Thomas Crown Affair but not If It’s Tuesday, It Must Be Belgium. His part in the remake of Thomas Crown is very very small. He basically just stands there for his entire part. Interesting point on Remick (possible UMR page?) and Anatomy of a Murder. I have only seen that one time….but it seems I remember Gazarra being the man behind the curtain orchestrating all the things Remick did. I will have to re-watch that one. Husbands is considered a classic…but I have never even remotely come close to watching it. Good feedback as always.

    2. BRUCE: On the first line of your text on Bruce McGill’s page you have incorrectly [I presume] referred to Ben Gazzara.

Ben attended the famous Actor’s Studio and thus became part of the 1950s’ emerging group of method actors. Because the leaders of that group, Brando, Clift, Newman and [for a brief while] Dean were able to command hefty salaries Ben demanded big money too and in the estimation of some film historians priced himself out of more prestigious parts that might otherwise have been his.

Ultimately Ben did apparently earn the big bucks as his net worth was updated on 15 March this year and estimated at $65 million according to the Celebrity Net Worth site. I liked him best in 1989’s now-cult film Road House starring Patrick Swayze.

This page is “Voted Up!” because Ben was a class act and overall, I enjoy Ben’s low-key style on both the big screen and on TV. The television production in which he gives the performance that most pleases me is 1990’s drama miniseries People Like Us, costarring Eva Marie Saint and Jean Simmons.

Ben was the main star in that one and it strikes me that although Ben never fulfilled his wish of emulating Brando, Clift and Newman he was years later in People Like Us supported by, and billed above, two of the greatest female co-stars of Monty, Paul and Marlon in their heydays: Eva Marie and Simmons [as in On the Waterfront, Desiree, Guys and Dolls, Until they Sail, Exodus and Raintree County]. “Everything comes to him who waits.”

      1. Hey Bob…..wow Benny G. figured out a way to sneak on a few of those 4 pages done in one day. I have since fixed that issue. That is a nice group of actors that Gazzara got to be associated with …..and looks like it was a financial boost as well. $65 million is really impressive…he must have made some smart investments. Good points on the lack of stardom for Ben. Your thoughts almost sound like Joel’s thoughts…you two think alike many times. I will have to dig out Joel’s exact thoughts. Good stuff as always.
