Best Western Movies

new western 11111Want to know the best Western Movies movies?  How about the worst Western Movies movies?  Curious about Western Movies box office grosses or which Western Movies movie picked up the most Oscar® nominations? Need to know which Western Movies movie got the best reviews from critics and audiences? Well you have come to the right place….because we have all of that information…and alot more.

Recently got a request to do a Westerns page from Chris.  This page represents page two of that request.  The first page looked at the Top 100 Westerns based on critic reviews and audience voting.  This page lists all the movies we researched (252 movies currently) but did not make the Top 100.  When I played football in high school….the 3rd stringers had to ride the bus with the cheerleaders (not really a problem) and the equipment.  Think of this page as that bus….they all want to get to the first bus…..and all the people on the first bus want to avoid the 2nd bus.

Obviously they are way more Westerns out there.  Is your favorite western missing?….just commented at the bottom and I will research and include that movie.  If your favorite is good enough….it might even make it to the Top 100 Western page.

Western Movies Can Be Ranked 6 Ways In This Table

The really cool thing about this table is that it is “user-sortable”. Rank the movies anyway you want.

  • Sort Western Movies by the stars of the movies
  • Sort movies by adjusted domestic box office grosses based on actual ticket sells (in millions)
  • Sort movies by yearly domestic box office rank
  • Sort by how they were received by critics and audiences.  60% rating or higher should indicate a good movie
  • Sort by how many Oscar® nominations and how many Oscar® wins each movie received.
  • Sort Western Movies movies by Ultimate Movie Rankings (UMR) Score.  UMR Score puts box office, reviews and awards into a mathematical equation and gives each movie a score.

  1. Hi Bruce,
One more time, a great job. I’m fan of westerns movies, anyway I’ve seen 135 movies of this table. Thank you.

    1. Hey laurent….glad you found my latest page…I feel really good about all the box office grosses that are listed on this page. 135 is pretty impressive….are American Westerns popular in France? Thanks for the nice words on our page.

      1. With few exceptions, the French were not big fans of westerns. In fact, for the French, westerns were limited to Gene Autry. Also, the genre was long considered a minor genre by French critics. But in the 70’s, thanks to the TV, the children of the my generation discovered westerns and they became very popular. Some major critics of this time as Bertrand Tavernier (also a very well know director in France) did much to rehabilitate westerns. In terms of box office, the five biggest western’s success of all-time in France are :
“Once upon a time in west”. It remains the seventh most successful of the French BO of all time, all combined films
Come next, in the order, “Dance with wolves”, “The magnificent seven”, “The bad, the good and the ugly” and “High noon”. Other succesfull american westerns are “Duel in the sun”, “Shane”, “Rio Bravo”, “The searchers”, “Alamo”, “How the west was won”.
But this italian westerns were most successfull that the previous list : “A fistfull of dollars”, “For a few dollars more”, “Duck you sucker” and “My name is nobody”. Italian westerns, but american stars…
If you ask the question what are the 6 biggest success of all-time in France, there are :
        N°1 : “Titanic”
        N°2 : “Bienvenue chez les ch’tis”
N°3 : “Intouchable” with François Cluzet and Omar Sy
N°4 : “Snow white and the seven dwarfs”
        N°5 : “La grande vadrouille”
N°6 : “Gone with the wind”

        1. Hey Laurent.
          1. Thanks for a great and educational comment….I really enjoyed reading this.
          2. So Gene Autry was to westerns what Jerry Lewis was to comedies in France….as Spock would say… “Fascinating”
          3. I will have to look up Bertrand Tavernier….the name is unknown to me.
          4. Wow….Once Upon A Time in The West…is the 7th biggest hit….that is awesome….it barely registered here in the states….it gained status many years after it’s release….just like Leone’s Onece Upon A Time In America.
          5. I can see Leone being so popular.
          6. Thanks for the Top 6 in France…..I have seen 1,3,4 and 6….never even heard of 2 and 5….I know….an Ugly American….lol.
          7. Great comment…I know I am repeating myself….but it is so true.

          1. Your Foreign Movie list is moving up our list of pages to do….just so you know that I have not forgotten your request.

          2. Bertrand Tavernier won 6 césar (the french oscars) for “Le juge et l’assassin” in 1976. He also wrote some books on the american cinema. He’s an admirer of John Ford, Alfred Hitchcock, Orson Welles and Howard Hawks.
“Bienvenue chez les ch’tis”, relased in 2008, is a comedy playing on the duality between the people of northern France and southern. Actually is not a very good movie, but french people liked it. It was also a smash in Belgium and Switzerland. In Germany, Spain and Italy, it was a succes too. Italians made a remake in 2010 “Benvenuti al sud”, the second biggest success of the year in Italy.
“La grande vadrouille” is a second world’s war comedy with Bourvil and Louis De Funès, two of the biggest french stars. It was also a big success in Belgium, Russia, Germany, Greece and Hong Kong. Louis de Funès was perhaps the greatest french star of all. He knew a little succes in america with “Mad adventures of Rabbi Jacob”, released in 1974 and grossed $2.8 millions in domestic rentals.

          3. Hey Laurent….once again thanks for the great detailed information. Sounds like he picked some all time greats to like. I will being an eye open for those movies. Love hearing how other countries respond to movies.

          4. One more information about “Once upon a time in west”. It was a great success in Europe. Especially in Germany (biggest success of the year 1969), Italy (3rd of the year 1968) and Spain. But it was in France that he knows more success.

          5. Hey laurent…all of this talk on Once Upon A Time In The West has me motivated to watch it again. Good to know that France saw the benefits of that movie right away….while we (the Americans) had to wait years to figure it out.

  2. Hi, Bruce.

I have seen 129 of these movies. Really.

For a woman who does not consider her a fan of westerns ………!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!??????????????/

What I watch because of the stars and because there are no cell phones in them.

Again, Happy 100th birthday to the late Glenn Ford! The Fastest Gun Alive…..was that on one of the lists…..

Regardless, I prefer to answer only the top 100 more than once as far as totals. That musicals page that kept having movies added I had to eventually stop recounting.

    1. Hey Flora.
      1. Well….129 is very impressive…especially for non-western fan.
      2. Tally count…Steve at 193….you at 129…Laurent at 135…me at….counting….140 for me…Steve easily gets the top spot…the rest of us were pretty close.
      3. I know many of your favorite stars made some westerns….including a couple appearing together in a movie….I guess Yellow Sky and How The West Was Won are favorites?
      4. Happy birthday to Glenn Ford….The Fastest Gun Alive was not originally on the page….but I will include after I do the comments on this page.
Don’t blame you….taking a look at Steve’s comment….there are lots and lots of movies that could be added to the page. I am curious how many movie will make it to the Top 100 page. If I did the right research….thinking…hoping….not many.
      As always…thanks for stopping by.

  3. You are a slacker. Where is the trivia for each movie. I feel I should get a refund. Oh wait I am not paying anything. This is a ton of westerns. Off the top of my head I do not see any missing though I am sure there are some missing. Job well done on these two pages.

    1. Hey Helakoski…….I guess I will have to admit to being a slacker…..but I did include over 250 movies here….that has to count for something….doesn’t it? I will send you a refund check on Monday. Thanks for the nice words on our page.
