Brian Keith

Want to know the best Brian Keith movies?  How about the worst Brian Keith movies?  Curious about Brian Keith box office grosses or which Brian Keith movie picked up the most Oscar® nominations? Need to know which Brian Keith movie got the best reviews from critics and audiences and which got the worst reviews? Well you have come to the right place….because we have all of that information.

Brian Keith (1921-1997) was an American film, television, and stage actor.  His roles went from westerns in the 1950s to Disney movies in the 1960s to good-hearted curmudgeon roles in the 1970s and 1980s.  His IMDb page shows 162 acting credits from 1924-1999. This page will rank 47 Brian Keith movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information. His many television appearances, and some of his 1950s B westerns were not were not included in the rankings.

Drivel Part 1:  Growing up, Brian Keith, was one of the tv dads I watched all the time in re-runs.  I imagine I watched each episode of Family Affair at least three times.  He has always reminded me of John Wayne….anybody else see the resemblance?  Drivel Part 2:  Last night the Cogerson family was visiting new neighbors.  Amazingly the talk turned to movies (I wonder how that happened?).  WoC was showing off UMR.com and asking…”Who is your favorite actor? I bet we have a page on them.”  Well the first 4 or 5 answers, did in fact have UMR pages.  Then Rebecca (the mom of the family) asked if we had a Brian Keith page.  Well…last night the answer was no….but today the answer is yes!

  1. Believe it or not I have seen any of the TV series Brian Keith has starred in, not even Family Affair. I did go to With Six You Get Eggroll back in 1968 (my mother too me to that) along with the similar Yours, Mine and Ours (also 68). Brian is no longer on the Oracle of Bacon Top 1000 Center of the Hollywood Universe list. However, he was # 205 back on the first list in 2000. 1. Hey Dan
      1. Wow…you never saw a single episode of Family Affair… I find that amazing….but I am the same way with friends…other than the Bruce Willis episodes….I did not watch that show at all.
      2. From #205 to off the list….time is still undeafeted….lol.
      3. Now that is a massive list from the 2000 Oracle.
      4. Glad you have your database back up and running.
      5. 35 Oscar winners is pretty impressive….and probably more than the average for all of these stars….granted Meteor got him almost half of them….lol. Talk about a bad movie with a great cast!
      6. I agree….Mr. Tovey strikes again.
As always…thanks for sharing this information.

  2. Hello Bruce,
I dont know the name ,i Kwow some films but i recognize his face.
I saw him in films like Nevada and Golden eye.
About the facts number 9, i read this story from early Hollywood where a young actress jump from the H of the legendary Signs.
I think i read this story in a Book about all the bad facts at the beginning of the legendary Hollywood with stories about Fatty and Mabel Normand, Rudolp Valentino, Pola Négri..etc
In that Time it Was HOLLYWOODLAND for the signs if my memory Is not in vacations.
But it Is very Sad family story.
    Good and interresting page.
    So long
    Pierre

    1. Hey Pierre
      1. Not surprised you are not too aware of him….he became a household name in the States because of his television show Family Affair.
      2. Even his biggest hit, The Parent Trap, saw him get overshadowed by Hayley Mills.
      3. Lots of people killed themselves near the Hollywood signs back then….today you can not get that close to the sign….you are 100% correct….it used to say Hollywoodland back then
      4. I think Nevada Smith is one of his best roles…his supporting character is a very likable role and he really shines in that one.
Thanks as always for stopping by and commenting.

  3. 1 I wonder what the new Cogerson neighbours think of “The Boy Next Door”.

2 Anyway we owe them a debt for being the inspiration of this Brian Keith page. Brian was always a solid dependable actor and I fondly remember him from two run-of-the mill movies in which he played the bad guy/unsympathetic character The 1954 The Violent Men [aka Rough Company] with Glenn Ford and The Rare Breed with Jimmy Stewart.

3 As the Work Horse says he was in Reflections in a Golden Eye with Brando and Taylor and his character had the reward of Liz fancying him in the movie over Hollywood supposed sex symbol Brando even though she was married to ole Mumbles in the film.

4 I think there is no harm in mentioning negative things on this site provided it is done tastefully and where appropriate sympathetically as it has been done on this page. For me as a film buff crucial facts about movie stars are important to know and if we are to acquire meaningful knowledge everything can’t be sanitised like that sewer in Guys and Dolls which was made to look like an ice cream parlour in the movie and which Brian’s Keith’s father Robert as the police Lt was forever trying to find because the gamblers were practising illegal gambling int it.l

5 I didn’t know about Brian’s suicide until I read it here and am grateful for being informed of the matter but there has long been speculation that Laddie’s death was not from an accidental drugs and alcohol overdose as officially recorded but was in fact suicide, and of course Monroe’s death has forever been the subject of conspiracy theories with a new one coming out every now and again.

    1. HI BRUCE:

1 There are of course no prizes for guessing who brought up the subject of movies with your new neighbours! You should by the way tell them that your regulars on this site wish them well [and of course pity them too!!!]

2 I’ve mentioned how I belong to a small amateur film buffs group and when we meet naturally movies take centre stage. However my wider circle are not predominately movie fans but sports followers of golf, tennis and English football so sport is usually top of the agenda at social gatherings and the likes of Peck, the Duke, Mumbles or even the current villain of the piece Boris Bela Hirschhorn are rarely mentioned

3 W o Bob is a great Rafa Nadal fan and sees the muscular Spaniard as a composite of Willis, Sly and Arnie whereas I like Federer and see the great Swiss as a sporting composite of The Duke, Laddie, Cary Grant and Mr M so again no prizes for guessing who is usually first to bring up Fed’s name in our gatherings. Come to think of it such an actual composite in the cinema would be some box office powerhouse beating maybe even Myrna!

      1. I actually it was WoC that brought up movies. Me and the other husband were talking about the Star Wars movies….and it was really confusing his sons….we had to keep saying….we are old…and Star Wars will always be the first one to us….and not the 4th one.

I know deep down you were upset that Joel had not included Brian Keith in his book…so there was no Hirschhorn comment on the new page….hopefully W o Bob keeps tissue around your computer, lap top or smart phone…lol.

Myrna has no Oscar love…and was not billed top too much….but she does have one title…Biggest Bo……lol.

    2. Hey Bob….our new neighbors are pretty cool….they like movies and have a big family. They have 7 children to our 6 children…. only difference is they still have 7 kids leaving at their house while we are down to 2. Our little girls get along great…..their current ages 11 (them) 10 (us), 9 (them) and 8 (us). That quartet had become inseparable since they arrived.

As for Keith…good to know the ones you remember fondly are not the missing Keith movies…I completely whiffed on numerous of his movies between 1955 and 1959.

I figured you would have some Brando thoughts….I did nit realize that was his dad until doing this page. As for his suicide…I am amazed that you, Flora and Steve were unaware of that…sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

      Good feedback as always.

  4. I didn’t know Brian Keith committed suicide. As Steve said, that’s tragic.

I’ve seen only 10 of Keith’s movies. The lowest ranked film I have seen is The Pleasure Seekers.

My favourites are The Parent Trap, The Young Philidelphians and The Deadly Companions.

    1. Hey Flora….I have noticed that everybody that has commented…nobody knew he killed himself…I am now wishing I had not included that fact…as it might change how you look at him the next time you see one of his movies.

I have seen 14 of his movies….with you and Steve being tied at 10……rarely do I top both of you when it comes to a classic actor like this…then again…I guess he was somebody in the “middle” of classic Hollywood and current Hollywood.

Wow…I am impressed that you have seen and like The Deadly Companions….that was Sam Peckinpah’s first ever directed movie. I just saw The Young Philadelphians and thought Keith was very good in that movie. Like Steve…I am not sure I have seen The Parent Trap….but I knew it was a monster hit.

      Good stuff as always.

  5. Looking at the trivia I didn’t know Brian Keith committed suicide, that’s tragic. I’ve only seen a few of his films but I liked him as an actor.

I’ve seen 10 of the 47 films listed. Favorites include- The Wind and the Lion (probably my favorite Brian Keith role as President Theodore Roosevelt), Sharky’s Machine, Hooper and that all time classic – Meteor.

I saw Meteor and Hooper at the cinema back in the 70s, the latter is one of my favorite Burt Reynolds movies, watched it many times on VHS back in the 80s.

The Wind and the Lion is another big favorite, both Sean Connery and Brian Keith are superb in this movie, the music by Jerry Goldsmith is magnificent. Btw I’m a huge Goldsmith fan and have about 60 of his scores on LP and CD.

The Parent Trap is no.1 on all the charts, I don’t think I’ve seen it, maybe when I was a child but I can’t remember it.

    Good work Bruce. Vote Up!

    1. Hey Steve
      1. Thanks for checking out my Brian Keith page.
      2. I am shocked that every person that commented was not aware that he killed himself….I remember when that news came out…I was shocked.
      3. I have seen 14 of the movies. I like you saw Meteor and Hooper in theaters. I think actually saw Hooper twice in theaters. I am sure back then I would have claimed that Hooper was one of the best movies ever made.
      4. I agree he is excellent in The Wind and the Lion. He made a very believable U.S. President.
      5. One day I will get a Goldsmith UMR page….just for you my friend.
      Thanks for the feedback.
