1 STEVE It’s a moot point in my view whether Trumbo should have been made as a TV movie or for cinematic release because on the one hand as Bruce’s table has demonstrated it didn’t have a big movie-house audience and in fact certainly over here it was not given a mainstream release and I saw it at the local small art house that doesn’t show the big commercial films.

2 However regardless of the medium it came though I’m glad that it DID come and certainly from a purely artistic viewpoint it merited a cinematic release as Bryan and others were nominated for Oscars,Golden Globes etc and obviously t none of that would have happened if Trumbo had been made for TV.

“I want to be remembered for more than just one summer’s commercial blockbuster!” [Rosemary Clooney’s famous nephew]

3 However can we get another prolonged debate going in the matter so that Bryan might rise to the top of the Work Horse’s day charts in the way that Lupino achieved that for Sylvia Sidney?

Walter White gets his very own UMR page, nice!

I first really noticed Bryan Cranston as the dad in the hit series Malcolm in the Middle, which I quite enjoyed. So it was a bit of a shock when I watched Breaking Bad and saw how brilliant this actor is. So good in fact that I doubt any of his movie performances even come close to how good he was as Walter White.

He was good in Trumbo, the film was interesting but it lacked that spark of greatness and it could easily have premiered as a TV movie. Ditto Anthony Hopkins as/in Hitchcock.

I’ve seen 17 of the 30 films listed – favorites include – The Wings of Honneamise (one of the great animes), Ghost in the Shell, Godzilla, Argo, Drive, John Carter, Trumbo, Madagascar 3, Kung Fu Panda 3 and Saving Private Ryan.

Saving Private Ryan (the last great Spielberg movie) tops all the charts, as it should.

Good work as always Bruce. Vote Up.

      Hey Steve
      1. Glad you like this Walter White page.
      2. I have seen 20 of his movies…but I admit….I do not remember his roles in all of the movies. Those will be hidden treasures the next time I watch movies like Little Miss Sunshine and Contagion…..though no way will I ever watch movies like Clean Slater or Love Ranch again.
      3. Of your favories….seen them all except the two animated favorites…heck…I have never even heard of The Wings of Honneamise.
      4. The one movie I would highly recommend is last year’s The Infiltrator….loved that movie and his performance….Benjamin Bratt is equally good in that one…..and has an amazing conclusion…which is based on a true story.
      5. I liked his performance as Trumbo more than you….so in this fight….I am standing beside Mr. Bob. Glad he got an Oscar nomination for that one.
      6. His part in Saving Private Ryan is small….but it is such a great movie….it had to be first.
As always…thanks for sharing your movie thoughts.

He is awesome in tv and movies; yet he is even more awesome on stage. His performance as LBJ was the best stage performance I have ever seen. I have a signed Cranston poster that I treasure.

1 By Coincidence a few weeks after watching Trumbo I saw the young Bryan Cranston in a routine supporting role in a 1987 episode of the TV series crime/courtroom Matlock starring Andy Griffith and nowhere in that very ordinary performance was there even a hint that Bryan was capable of the magnificent piece of acting that he did almost 30 years later as a mature performer in the 2015 Trumbo.

2 Much as I admire DeCaprio I was sad when Bryan’s Trumbo performance lost out to him in the Oscar stakes because the very leading players in movies like Leo can nearly always get another shot at earning an Academy Award whereas that doesn’t usually happen too often to perceived lesser lights like Cranston. Brian is though a multi Golden Globe nominee, actually won a Golden Globe for TV work and as Bruce points out is also a multi Emmy winner (and a nominee in addition to a winner) .

3 Such considerations along with Bryan’s prolific almost half century career in movies and TV well entitle him to this page and I very much welcome it. As is usual with a Cogerson profile of a performer this one too is highly informative and I was pleased to learn that in at least two respects in relation to entertainment Bryan and I were of roughly the same mind. Dick Van Dyke is one of his favourite actors and as I’ve said recently on the Peter Falk page Dick is also one of my three favourite TV actors. Also Bryan’s favourite movie On the Waterfront is certainly one of my own best-loved movies. I wonder though what Bryan thought of all that mumbling that Steve identified in the film !!

      Hey Bob
      1. Thanks for being the first to comment on our latest UMR page.
      2. When Helakoski suggested this page….my first thought was…he is a tv actor……and probably only has a few movies…..boy was I wrong.
      3. Since 2011…he has been one of the hardest working men in Hollywood. He has two movies already finished….one is the remake of Les Intouchables which was a massive worldwide hit a few years ago. I see another Oscar nomination coming….if Kevin Hart does not overwhelm Cranston.
      4. I agree…he was amazing as Trumbo…..but there was no way he was going to win over Leo.
      5. He has won almost ever acting award…Tony, Emmy, Golden Globe….only Oscar avoids him….not bad for a guy that I used to view as “A poor man’s Phil Hartman”.
      6. I figured you would like that On The Waterfront was his favorite movie….once again proving that Brando is everywhere…lol.
Thanks for the visit and the comment.

        HI BRUCE

1 What you are in reality saying is that Bryan is the Work Horse of MOVIES !

2 I wonder if Bryan’s Trumbo performance would back in the 1970s have gotten him onto Tricky Dicky’s Enemies List. Certainly according to the movie the real-life Trumbo was lucky that the Duke didn’t chin him !

I would say…of big budget high profile movies he is the Work Horse of Movies…..but when that title might belong to Danny Trejo….he makes almost 20 movies a year…granted nobody has heard or seen any of them……with the exception of the most awesome Bad Ass movies…lol.
