  1. Candice Bergen is no longer on the Oracle of Bacon Top 1000 Center of the Hollywood Universe list. She was # 597 in 2000. Before we get to the lists I used to watch reruns of TV series Yancy Derringer last year. Candice’s mom ran the saloon on the show! These are the actors on the current list she has appeared with.

    1. Hey Dan
      1. As always….thanks for putting these lists together.
      2. So she went from the Top 600 to out of the Top 1000..not thinking she will be making a return to the Top 1000.
      3. Looks like Gene Hackman is her most frequent co-star. I like one of her Michael Caine movies but I really dislike The Magus.
      4. 30 Oscar winning co-stars is a pretty good total….Gandhi makes up 4 of those 30.
      5. Interesting trivia about Yancy Derringer and her mom. I know her dad was famous…..I did not know about her mom at all.
      Good feedback as always.

  2. I saw 9 including 8 of top 11. ten and favourite Ghandi. 10 not a favourite the sand pebbles. no nines. hidden gems: bite the bullet (an 8) Hackman and Coburn are very good, the wind and the lion (an 8) Connery is very good.

    1. Hey bob cox. Thanks for the visit and the tally count. Tally count…me 19, Steve 10, you 9 and Flora 3. Gandhi is a classic….but not a favorite. I love Bite The Bullet….I agree with you about Hackman and Connery shining in that one…..but Candice holds her own. The Wind and the Lion is one of Steve’s favorites. Good stuff.

  3. I have seen only 3 Candice Bergen movies. Considering that she debuted in 1966, that is very low. However, all three movie I have seen are in the top ten:

    The Sand Pebbles
    Sweet Home Alabama
    Miss Congeniality

None of the 3 are favourites of mine.

Regarding The Sand Pebbles: I was finally able to view this film through its entirety on the third attempt. The first two times I could not get past the violence of the death of the character played by Mako. I tried again, because I want to see all of Steve McQueen’s movies. The only one I am missing now is his lowest ranked film: Never Love a Stranger.

I am most familiar with Candice Bergen from Murphy Brown.

    1. Further comment Monday morning:

With all the videos Steve Lensman has been doing on British actors, I have seen several videos on actors who have been in Gandhi. Now Candice Bergan has a page on UMR. When I found out TCM was airing Gandhi this past weekend I thought I better record it. I did and watched it last night. It is a great film with essentially only Ben Kingsley and the actress playing his wife throughout the film with a bunch of cameos. Now that I have crossed this movie off my list, I probably won’t watch it again soon.

      1. Hey Flora….thanks for the mini-review on Gandhi…..I agree it is a good movie…but not one I want to re-watch on a regular basis…I have seen it twice in 36 years…..so my next viewing is due in 2036….lol. Yep Steve has been cracking out the Brits lately. Thanks for the return comment.

    2. Hey Flora….yep Candice was active 10 years before your 1976 line in the sand. I have seen all three of your movies. I like all three of them….but they fall short of my favorites. The Sand Peebles is a long and more than depressing movie. Very cool that you have almost seen every McQueen movie….I am only missing about 3 or 4 of his movies myself. I think many are only familiar with her from her Murphy Brown role. Good stuff.

  4. One of my favorite films on this chart is 2010, the sequel to 2001 A Space Odyssey… and Candice Bergen wasn’t even in it. Okay, she did provide the voice of the computer SAL 9000 at the beginning of the film. 🙂

I’ve seen 10 of the 35 films on the chart, favorites are – The Wind and The Lion, Gandhi, The Sand Pebbles, Bite the Bullet and 2010.

Gandhi tops the UMR and critics chart and The Sand Pebbles was her biggest hit.

    Nice work Bruce, Vote Up!

    1. Hey Steve
      1. Thanks for the feedback on our Candice Bergen page….and thanks again for catching my Bergman vs Bergen error.
      2. You are 100% correct her role in 2010 was a voice role only…..I am thinking I need to revisit that movie…..it has been years since I saw 2010.
      3. I have seen 19 of her movies….so I have your tally almost doubled.
      4. My favorites would include Bite The Bullet, Stick and Carnal Knowledge.
      Good stuff as always

  5. HI BRUCE: Candice was part of a number of significant movies in her heyday such as The Sand Pebbles, Carnal Knowledge, the Wind and the Lion and Starting Over[all of which you highlight/mention above] However possibly “thinking” moviegoers of those days who like I are still around now will remember her most for 1970s controversial Soldier Blue which was interpreted as a critique of Hollywood’s perceived unbalanced portrayal of the American Indian community*** and/or an anti-war film.

To make its point the film was noted for scenes of graphic violence, and the hit title song was sung by the Canadian Buffy Sainte-Marie a political activist, pacifist and great singer whose songs included protest about the treatment of the American Indian and the abuse and un-accountability of Power [“and the big ones get away.”] –

    “Oh this is my country——
    Ooh soldier blue, soldier blue
Can’t you see there’s another way to love her?”

In recent years Candice has been confined to supporting/ensemble roles [The Women, The Book Club and Sex and the City all included in your table above] but for her work in her heyday and her longevity she has in my view been an excellent candidate for a Cogerson page and I therefore would warmly welcome this page if only for Soldier Blue alone, though I see you give it just a so-so 66% rating just below IMDB’s 69%. However I liked the miniature of Candice and Sir Maurice. Her net worth is said to be currently $25 million. Anyway “Voted Up!”.

***One movies scholar cited a list of films in which the Duke allegedly humiliated and insulted Indians. In one of them for example an Indian Scout who is actually an “Uncle Tom” for the cavalry rides up to Wayne to gives him a report and a standing John apparently drags him off his horse and scolds him “I don’t talk up to the wind!” [If Joel had written that kind of stuff about my idol it would be another black mark against him in my book!]

    1. Hey Bob….thanks for checking out our Candice Bergman page. I agree…the first part of her career was filled up with many important roles in important movies. I have to admit…I am not very aware of Soldier Blue….but after reading your comment, I admit my interest in seeing that movie has dramatically increased.

By the 1980s she was a supporting player in movies while a leading player on television. I liked her in Carnal Knowledge, Stick and Bite The Bullet. On our recent trip…we stopped at the book store (the former home of your Murphy book) and picked up the Golden Turkey Awards book…in that one Bergen was nominated as the Worst Actress….it has some pretty self-defeating comments on Bergen on her early movies….especially her role in The Magus….one of the worst and most confusing Michael Caine movies ever made.

Interesting thoughts on Wayne and some of his movie characters of the past. Good feedback as always.
