Charles Coburn Movies

Charles Coburn (1877-1961) was an Oscar® winning American actor. Best known for his work in comedies, Coburn won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar® for 1943’s The More the Merrier.   He appeared in movies from 1935 to 1960.   His IMDb page shows 98 acting credits.   This page will rank 61 Charles Coburn Movies in 6 different statistical categories.    Television roles, shorts and uncredited roles  are not included in the rankings.  Sadly, we were unable to find box office grosses on 9 of his movies….those are also not included in the following tables.

    1. Hey Dan….I am assuming that these actors like Sam Harris here and on the Cary Grant page are like Bess Flowers….people with huge filmographies but were never stars. Thanks for sharing this information.

  1. In his 1983 book The Master excludes Charles but had the Hyper Critical One profiled him he might have been minded to observe that Coburn probably sported too frosty a face most times to make major stardom.

However Charles undoubtedly deserves his Cogerson page because as a comedy specialist in the first decades of the talkies he would have been one of the cornerstones of the production system back then which thrived to a goodly extent on his brand of comedy albeit mo\stly in supporting roles.

Oddly enought therefore the film that I most remember Charles for is the 1951 action movie The Highwayman. The latter character is a cross between Robin Hood and The Scarlet Pimpernel as he robbed the rich to give to the poor but at the same time rescued innocents who were being sold into slavery in the colonies.

Philip Friend played the title role, Wanda Hendrix [then the ex Mrs Audie Murphy] was the heroine Bess and Charles was Lord Walters. The movie was based on the classic poem by Alfred Noyes which I have long loved and the first verse of the poem accompanied the opening of the movie and the last verse played out at the film’s end.

And still on a winter’s night they say when the wind is in the trees,
And the moon is a ghostly galleon tossed upon cloudy seas,
And the road is a ribbon of moonlight looping the purple moor
A highwayman comes riding, riding, riding.
A highwayman comes riding up to the old inn door.

    1. Hey Bob…..some of the goals here at UMR are to….get all the yearly pages done….while getting most of the major Oscar winners done…Coburn was another Best Supporting Actor winner…that finally got his UMR love. I thought Joel had a Coburn page…sadly…I was mistaken. Interesting that The Highwayman is “your” Coburn movie memory. Not sure when I first noticed him. Probably when I tracked down The More The Merrier…as I was on a quest to see every Best Supporting Actor winning movie ever made. Thanks for the lyrics and the feedback. Good stuff.

  2. Woohoo! James Coburn’s dad gets a UMR page at last! Nice.

I’ve seen just 8 of the 61 films on the chart, pitiful. My favorites – Heaven Can Wait, Monkey Business, Road to Singapore, The Lady Eve, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and Around the World in 80 Days.

I’ll always remember Coburn acting like a baby after taking an experimental potion in Monkey Business, the whole cast was crazy in that one.

Around the World in 80 Days was a massive hit, looking at the domestic grosses it must have grossed about a billion dollars worldwide adjusted. The English director Michael Anderson died last year, aged 98.

    Good stuff Bruce. Vote Up!

    1. Yep James’ dad got a page…lol. I have you by one movie. I have seen 9 of the Top 24 and then 0 after that. Monkey Business is an ok comedy….but not my favorite Cary Grant movie. I think The Lady Eve is my favorite movie of his, followed by his two Jean Arthur movies…..The Devil and MsJones and The More The Merrier. I have not seen Around The World in 80 Days in awhile. I have forgotten so many of the supporting and cameo roles in that one. Good feedback.

  3. Charles Coburn starred in 2 of the worst 1940’s pics I ever saw, George Washington Slept Here and Yes Sir, That’s My Baby and one of my best, Kings Row. Charles was never on the Oracle of Bacon Top 1000 Center of the Hollywood Universe list but there are a number of people on the December 15, 2018 list he appeared with, thanks to their new database. We start off with your idol.

    1. Hey Dan. Good lists on Mr. Charles Coburn. And good job guesses he was the classic Oscar winner that I was hinting at. Always good to see Sir Michael top any list. James Stewart is among his most frequent co-stars on the first list. The rest of the list is filled with other legends. Overall, a pretty impressive list. I agree with you….47 is a pretty impressive total. Thankfully, I have not seen either George Washington Slept Here or Yes Sir, That’s My Baby. I agree Kings Row is indeed one of the better movies on the 1940s….it is also pretty highly rated by the UMR Score. Good feedback as always. Thanks for sharing this information.

  4. I have seen 28 Charles Coburn movies. He is a favourite character actor of mine.

The HIGHEST rated movie I have seen is Around the World in 80 Days.

The highest rated movie I have NOT seen is Wilson.

The LOWEST rated movie I have seen is The Story of Mankind. Prior to this, the lowest rated movie I have seen is Made For Each Other.

    Favourite Charles Coburn Movies:

    The More the Merrier
Around the World in 80 Days
    The Lady Eve
    Heaven Can Wait
    Gentlemen Prefer Blondes
    King’s Row
    Bachelor Mother
    The Green Years
    The Devil and Miss Jones
    The Constant Nymph
    Vivacious Lady
    Princess O’Roarke
    HM Pulham Esquire
    In This Our Life
    Rhapsody in Blue
    Monkey Business
    Edison the Man

Other Charles Coburn Movie I Have Seen

    Road to Singapore
The Paradine Case (not a favourite despite Gregory Peck and Alfred Hitchcock)
    George Washington Slept Here
    In Name Only
    Idiot’s Delight (Clark Gable dances)
The Story of Alexander Graham Bell
    B.F.’s Daughter
Yellow Jack (not a favourite Robert Montgomery)
    Made For Each Other
    The Story of Mankind

    1. Oops! I see I wrote down The Green Years and The Greener Years. Of course, it is The Green Years and that is only one film. Therefore, I have seen 27 movies.

    2. Hey Flora….28 Charles Coburn movies is pretty impressive. That tops Steve and my combined total of 17. 7 of the 9 I have seen made your favorites list. I know The Story of Mankind is supposed to be horrible, but I want to see it. The cast is so awesome….it is a shame that he performed so badly. The Paradine Case is one of the few American Hitchcock movies that I have not seen….but one day I will check it out. As for your “Green Error”….I have fixed that one. As always….your contributions are always appreciated.
