Charles “Charlie” Chaplin, was an English comic actor and filmmaker who rose to fame in movie shorts from Mack Sennett’s Keystone Studios.  Chaplin and his screen persona “the Tramp” became a worldwide icon.   From his start in shorts, he turned his attention to full length movies.  Between 1921 and 1940, Chaplin would star, write, produce, direct and compose the music for some of the greatest movies ever made!

His IMDb page shows 86 acting credits from 1914-1967. This page will rank 12 Charlie Chaplin full length movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information. Television shows, his many shorts and cameos were not included in the rankings.

Charlie Chaplin Movies Can Be Ranked 6 Ways In This Table

The really cool thing about this table is that it is “user-sortable”. Rank the movies anyway you want.

  • Sort Charlie Chaplin movies by co-stars of his movies.
  • Sort Charlie Chaplin movies by adjusted domestic box office grosses using current movie ticket cost (in millions)
  • Sort Charlie Chaplin movies by yearly domestic box office rank
  • Sort Charlie Chaplin movies how they were received by critics and audiences.  60% rating or higher should indicate a good movie.
  • Sort by how many Oscar® nominations each Charlie Chaplin movie received and how many Oscar® wins each Charlie Chaplin movie won.
  • Sort Charlie Chaplin movies by Ultimate Movie Rankings (UMR) Score.  UMR Score puts box office, reviews and awards into a mathematical equation and gives each movie a score.

  1. Well, that was interesting – the video was good. I enjoyed Limelight – only have seen a little of his films now and again – in the past. It would be interesting to see Limelight once again. Thanks for this site.

    1. Hey BERN1960…..glad you liked this video. Glad you liked Limelight….not much slapstick comedy in that one…..just a good drama with lots of emotion….thanks for stopping by.

  2. I have copies of all 12 on the list of biggest moneymakers. I love Chaplin’s films. I discovered them late, as, my mom can’t stand him… I’ve never figured out why, though.

    1. Hey Bruce….very cool. My DVD collection sadly only has one Chaplin movie….but I have seen 10 of his movies. So far the only one I did not enjoy was 1914’s Till’s Punctured Romance….his character was difficult to like….which caused me not to like the movie. I think the saying….better late than never is perfect for your timing in discovering Chaplin.

      1. He’s the bad guy… I believe you will find that the film is called. “Tillie’s Punctured Romance.” I have a copy of it on 16mm film.

My love of Chaplin started when I saw Modern Times on AMC in 1990.

        1. Thanks for pointing out my spelling error…I fixed it on the table….I forgot the dreaded “ie” at the end. Chaplin was the bad guy but unlike his bad guy in Monsieur Verdoux I found myself not like him at all. Still for a movie that is now over 100 years old…it is still fun to watch.

    1. Glad you agree Rene R. Limelight has one of my favorite pieces of movie trivia ever! Chaplin made Limelight in 1952….it did not play in Los Angeles until 1972 at which time it finally became eligible for Oscar love….Chaplin indeed won the Oscar for Musical Score 20 years after making the movie. That 20 year gap has to be a record. Thanks for stopping by.

  3. I wasn’t sure I had a poster page for Chaplin, thanks for the link Bruce, always appreciated.
A true cinema legend but I have to confess to not seeing any of Chaplins later films, just the old classics that I’ve grown up with. I’ve seen just 6 of the 12 movies you’ve listed, the most recent was The Great Dictator (1940).
I would pick Modern Times as my favorite and it’s good to see it topping the critics chart. Interesting to see City Lights was his most successful in adjusted dollars, many critics consider that his best film along with The Gold Rush. The Kid tops the moviescore chart, not a favorite of mine I find it a bit too sentimental.
Overall I prefer Buster Keaton of the silent movie legends and the Marx Bros of the golden age comics.
Nice work as always Bruce, voted up!

    1. Hey Steve…yep you had a Charles Chaplin poster page…..glad I could jog your memory on that. Wow I am surprised that you have only seen 6 of his full length movies….I am at 10 (Flora might not even be able to top that)….with A Woman In Paris and A King in New York being the missing ones. So is Limelight one of the newer ones you have not seen? That has Keaton and Chaplin in it. And is my favorite of the Chaplin movies.
The Kid, The Gold Rush, A Woman in Paris, and Till’s Punctured Romance actually got scored a different way than the other movies…because they were made before the birth of the Oscars…so their scores are higher because they did not have to deal with winning awards. So I admit that Cogerson Movie Score is not the best column to look at in this page. Yes I just admitted it….Cogerson Movie Score is flawed on this page….just in case you did not believe your eyes the first time.
Of the remaining 4 to do on the Top Actors list…..2 are your favorites….Keaton and the Marx Brothers….Keaton might be very hard to do. As always thanks for stopping by.

      1. I forget to mention….do you find it as unusual as I do that City Lights got shut out by the Oscar voters?….I mean no nominations in any category…….maybe they were mad at him…..because it was labeled as a great movie right out of the gate….that killed it’s score…..and makes no sense what so ever .

        1. Hey Bruce, I don’t think I’ve seen Limelight, maybe when I was a kid but I can’t remember it. I will seek it out based on your recommendation. No nominations for City Lights? That is odd considering some of the films they were nominating that year, like Skippy starring Jackie Cooper, nominated for Best Picture and winning Best Director! Was that better film than City Lights?

          1. I think you will like it. Plus it has Buster Keaton in a supporting role. Now it makes sense….I forgotten about Skippy it probably took all the City Lights votes….lol. Maybe Chaplin had the same issue Spielberg and now Christopher Nolan….their massive success had the voters withhold their votes as a way to punish him for being so successful. Thanks for coming back and answering the questions.
