Dudley Moore Movies

Dudley Moore (1935-2002) was an Oscar®-nominated English actor, comedian, musician and composer.  Moore became known for his work with the comedy revue Beyond the Fringe.  He appeared with another Beyond the Fringe alumni, Peter Cook, in many projects in the 1960s and 1970s.   It was his solo movie career (Foul Play, 10 & Arthur) that briefly made Moore a superstar.   His IMDb page shows 48 from 1961 to 1998.   This page ranks 23 Dudley Moore movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information. Television shows, some of his early British movies and his movies not released in North America theaters are not included in the rankings.

From Joel Hirschhorn’s Rating The Movie Stars Book…..”Although British, Dudley Moore is really Woody Allen’s cousin under the skin.  He flaunts his hangups and asks to be loved in spite of them. ”

    1. Hey Dan….after the epic Burgess Meredith lists I just looked at….Dudley’s lists look like a baby compared to that monster comment. So even in his prime Dudley was barely remaining in the Top 1000. That is interesting to know. Good to see Caine as his highest person on the current list. The Wrong Box had a stellar cast…but only two Oscar winners….I always think Ralph Richardson was an Oscar winner….but then I realize that did not happen. Thanks for sharing these informative lists on Dudley Moore and his movies…your efforts are greatly appreciated.

  2. I never found Dudley Moore, Commander of the Order of the British Empire, funny but enjoyed him in a general way in the monster hits 10 and Arthur and in the flop Arthur 2. As Bruce’s 35% rating for the latter suggests that sequel wasn’t up to much but I found Dud likeable enough in it but in little else other than these 3 movies.

However I used to listen to his music because he was both a musician and a composer and he formed the jazz group The Dudley Moore Trio in which Dud was the one who played the piano. Indeed in his film debut, 1961’s The 3rd Alibi a Brit B movie lasting just 68 minutes Dudley was an uncredited piano accompanist. Bruce mentions above that a number of Moore’s Brit films were not included in the table and it will be seen that 3rd Alibi was one of those excluded.

One scene in Arthur 2 I DID find funny. Liza Minnelli’s lay about father is keen for her to land a successful husband as a meal ticket for him and her and when Liza brings Arthur home the father is hiding behind a door hoping to hear that she’s found a good provider. Liza, not knowing Arthur’s a millionaire asks him what he does for a living and he simply replies that he doesn’t work. The camera switches to the father behind the door who has an agonised look on his face and excruciatingly murmurs to himself “Ohhhh – another BEAUTY!”

As Bruce indicates Dudley’s successful film career, musical playing and composing skills and other career as a comedian entitle him to be regarded as a multi-talented person and as such one who has earned this Cogerson page, which I welcome

    1. The old memory is not what it was – how can Arnie and Sly even REMEMBER how to fight?!.

I’m now certain that the scene that I described in my previous post was from the 1st Arthur and not the sequel.

Apologies to any one I’ve misled or confused.

      1. Hey Bob…I am younger…I have seen both Arthur movies…..but you memory of those movies is a lot better than mine. So I would not worry about your memory failing you…from my view….your memory is doing just fine! Good feedback.

        1. Thanks Bruce for being kind to an old man -for ensuring your site is not No Country for Old Men!

I would have found that scene very funny whichever Arthur movie it had been in.

    2. Hey Bob, thanks for checking out our new Dudley page. Interesting point about you not thinking he was too funny. I think Blake Edwards tried to replace Peter Sellers with Dudley. 10..one of Moore’s biggest hits….seems like a movie that would have showcased Sellers comic abilities. I saw Moore had lots of music in his life…including some photos of the records of The Dudley Moore Trio. He played a musical instrument in many of his movies.

I feel like we got most of his movies here…but yes is uncredited role in The 3rd Alibi did not make the page. Glad you like Moore getting his own UMR page. This weekend…I tracked down and took photos of many of the John Willis Screen World movies….when I kept seeing Dudley listed in the Top Box Office Stars list….I figured he should get a page. Good stuff.

    3. Bob, good comment. I watched Arthur last week. remember the scene and loved it. I saw 4 of his movies , Arthur is a 10 and a favourite. 10 is a 7, barely worth watching, the bare part worth watching is Bo Derek. I saw him live in Stop the World, I Want to get off in a Dallas summer musical.
      no hidden gems.

  3. I have seen 6 Dudley Moore movies. All of them are in the top 10.

The HIGHEST rated film I have seen is Aurthur.

The highest rated film I have NOT seen is Micki and Maude.

The LOWEST rated film have seen is Those Daring Young Men in Their Jaunty Jalopies.

    Favourite Dudley Moore Movies:
    Arthur
    The Wrong Box

    Other Dudley Moore Films Seen:
    10
    Bedazzled
    Foul Play
Those Daring Young Men in Their Jaunty Jalopies

    1. Hey Flora….thanks for the visit, the comment, the tally and for sharing your memories of Mr. Moore. I have seen 5 of the 6 Moore movies that you have seen. Only Those Daring Young Men in Their Jaunty Jalopies has escaped me….not sure if I even want to see that one…lol. The Wrong Box has one stellar cast….but it was a movie that I thought was a little slow. I saw 10, Bedazzled and Foul Play all the time, when I was a teenager. Good stuff as always.

  4. HI Bruce

Remember watching Arthur on video in my late teens & found it extremely funny.
Went to the cinema & watched Best Defence & came out utterly disappointed.
    As always, great work, Bruce.

On a sidenote, are you aware of these books? (both from Amazon):
Annual US Top Film Rentals 1912 – 1979 [Print Replica] Kindle Edition
US Weekly Top 10 Grossing Film Charts of the 1930s [Print Replica] Kindle Edition

    1. Hey Søren…thanks for the feedback and for stopping by. Good point about Arthur and the pretty horrible movies that followed in Moore’s career. As for Best Defense…Eddie Murphy is barely in the movie….but if you watch the trailer it looks like Eddie is in almost every scene. As for the e-books you mentioned…I have seen them…not sure I trust the numbers in the books…and for the years they seem to only have a limited amount of movies to look at. As always your support is greatly appreciated.

  5. I watched Bedazzled again recently, it has not dated well and there’s not enough of Raquel Welch as ‘Lilian Lust’.

I’ve seen 9 of the 23 films on the chart, none of them big favorites but ‘Arthur’, Foul Play, ’10’ and The Wrong Box did make me laugh.

Mrs. Ada Holmes: Now then, Shirl.
Sherlock Holmes: Mother, please don’t call me Shirl.
Mrs. Ada Holmes: I’ve always called you Shirl and I always will. Oh, you should have seen him when he was a little girl, Iris.
Sherlock Holmes: I was never a little girl, mother.

Foul Play was a hit in 1978, a year later ’10’ was even bigger, and the year after Dudley hit his peak with ‘Arthur’ a smash box office success, and it was all downhill after that.

    Good stuff Bruce. Vote Up!

    1. Hey Steve
      1. Thanks for checking out our latest UMR page…Mr. Dudley Moore.
      2. I have seen 18 of his movies or 78%….more than I thought and double your tally.
      3. I figured you would have seen more of his movies….is he not a great British jewel?
      4. Actually went to the theater to see 3 of his movies. Foul Play…which was the movie that I first noticed him, Wholly Moses…which was right in the middle of his peak years and Like Father, Like Son….my ex-wife was in love with Kirk Cameron….so it was a required movie theater event.
      5. Of your favorites…I feel the same way….seen all of them….with The Wrong Box being my most recent Moore movie seen.
      6. Good quote from The Hounds of Baskervilles….might be the only good thing in entire movie….which I thought was horrible.
      7. You are right…after Arthur it started going downhill quickly…Micki and Maude gave him his only success in that slide.
      8. Of the films not talked about…I thought Crazy People had a few nice moments.
      Good stuff as always.
