  1. I saw 21 including top 13. I agree with Steve, Truman is 2 thumbs down. 5 favorites all 10s: places in the heart, a beautiful mind, Apollo 13, the rock, the abyss. gravity a 10 but not a favorite. if a best picture Oscar nominee can be a hidden gem its The Hours. I enjoyed the ladies performances in stepmom(Sarandon, Roberts). lots of very goods (9s) and goods (8s) including Bob Roy’s 3 favorites from his very informative comment, well done. I agree with Soren and Bob that absolute power is noteworthy. Harris is wonderful as pollock, an okay movie.
I went to Dallas for the holidays visiting my parents who are divorced. I watched Mona Lisa Smile with my 86 year old mother and her new boyfriend on the big screen at their retirement home. he loves movies and goes every night. we had some lively discussion and I introduced him to UMR. she has not seen 10 movies in the last 10 years but has gone several times a week for a month or two and likes movies now , LOL. 8 good female performances and a dozen controversial topics in a Julia Roberts film that was much appreciated the second time around and a cherished memory for the rest of my days.

    1. Hey bob cox
      1. I fixed your “anonymous” name….it is now bob cox.
      2. 21 is a pretty decent tally…..but behind both me and Steve.
      3. That is a lot of 10s for Ed Harris movies…..another in the “do not like” The Truman Show……it was a movie that I did not want to like….but ended up really enjoying that one.
      4. Love Apollo13 and The Rock…..more amazed at the behind the scenes making of the Abyss….than I am about the movie.
      5. That is awesome that your mom is now watching movies on a regularly……sounds like she made a good pick with regards to her new boyfriend….gotta respect a movie lover……glad to see you introduced him to UMR….that is greatly appreciated.

  2. Hi Bruce
Happy 4th of July to you & your family.
Ed Harris is a very good actor and has appeared in a lot of great movies – my favorite must be Clint’s Absolute Power.
    As always, great work Bruce.

    1. Hey Søren….good to hear from you again. I hope your 4th was enjoyable as well. Good to know that Absolute Power is your favorite Ed Harris movie. It got a Top 20 spot on the UMR rankings….which is pretty good considering how many movies he made. Thanks for stopping by.

  3. Ed Harris, one of my favorite modern actors ever since I first saw him play astronaut John Glenn in The Right Stuff and a ruthless mercenary in the excellent Under Fire, both 1983 films.

I’ve seen 28 of the 55 films on the chart, just over half. Favorites include – The Right Stuff, Under Fire, The Rock, Apollo 13, The Abyss, A History of Violence, Enemy at the Gates, Glengarry Glen Ross, Gravity and Snowpiercer.

He was good (or should that be ‘bad’?) in The Truman Show but the film was never a favorite of mine, the whole concept made me angry.

The Firm was an overlong but decent thriller with some good actors but not a film I watch often.

Another top page Bruce. Vote Up!

    1. Hey Steve…..I have seen 45 of these movies….I had no idea I had seen so many of his movies. I agree he was awesome in The Right Stuff. I have seen all of your favorites….with Snowpiercer, The Rock, The Right Stuff, Apollo 13 and The Abyss being in my Top 10. I like The Truman Show more than you….and it is the only Jim Carrey movie WoC will watch. The Firm is almost his biggest hit….I liked the book much more……but liked Harris in the movie. Thanks for the vote up, tally and the comment….all are greatly appreciated.

  4. HI BRUCE
The top six of Ed’s highest grossing films in your chart are blockbusters, each exceeding more that twice your magical 100 million benchmark and I’ve seen 4 of them Apollo 13, The Firm, Beautiful Mind and Truman Show.

I have not seen too many of his films other than those four and that is ironic because he reminds me very much of my own very favourite actor Richard Widmark, both in appearance and style. Also my personal 3 favourite Harris performances are among his lesser known films – Clint’s Absolute Power and two which you charts suggest even fewer people will be familiar with, A History of Violence and An Eye for an Eye.

Although he has taken lead roles in movies [eg China Moon] I regard Ed as predominately a supporting actor and certainly that’s his status in movies featuring superstars like Eastwood, Cruise and Hanks. However overall Harris is undoubtedly a terrific actor and for my money he deserves this new Cogerson page just like the great supporting performers of yesteryear such as Thelma Ritter and Walter Brennan have deserved theirs.

I should add that Ed also produces, directs and screen-writes and has had a lot of television success. For example he was nominated for a Golden Globe for his lead role in the highly-regarded 2005 two part mini series Empire Falls. He was in the company of Hollywood Royalty there, being supported by Paul Newman who won a supporting actor Golden Globe for his role and by Paul’s wife Joanne who was nominated as a supporting actress in that two-parter.

I personally especially adored Ed’s performance as US Senator John McCain in the 2012 TV movie Game Change for which Ed WON the Golden Globe for best supporting actor. That excellent movie followed the unusual rise of the seemingly eccentric Sarah Palin [Julianne Moore] as McCain’s running mate during the 2008 US presidential election The film contrasted Sarah’s apparent eccentricities with Senator’s McCain’s strong character and fine personal moral code.

Indeed Ed MUST be a special guy because he was born in 1950 the year in which I became fanatically attracted to the movies, so in Steve’s continuing absence a “Vote Up” for this new page!

    1. Hey Bob
      1. Thanks for your thoughts on Ed Harris.
      2. A History of Violence was a critical hit….but barely registered at the box office….Harris is awesome in the movie…..he was in the running for yet another Best Supporting Actor nomination for that movie…..but in the end he just missed out.
      3. I agree with you….that is more of a supporting actor…..looking at his Top 20 UMR movies…only The Abyss could be a leading role…..but those other 19 movies are all pretty good movies.
      4. I love Empire Falls….it is the final great Paul Newman performance….I own the DVD of that mini-series….and one day I will revisit it….plus it has a DVD commentary….which will be like seeing a new Newman movie.
      5. I have not seen Game Change….but I have heard of that one…..one day I will check it out…thanks for the headsup on it’s quality.
      Good feedback as always.

      1. HI BRUCE

Welcome back.and thanks for your detailed response.

I urge you to see Game Change as the whole cast are excellent including Woody Harrelson as Senator McCain’s aide Steve Schmidt.

  5. BRUCE

I will be sending a substantive post later about your new Ed Harris page but meanwhile please note that in the 2nd para of your lead-in you mix him up with Tony Randall

    1. Bruce appreciates you pointing this out and will fix this as soon as he is back at his computer.
